with shift you can select the first file hold shift and select the last, everything in between will be selected too.

if you hold control you can select 1 file at a time like you did here.

If you have a single-button mouse on a Mac you can hold down either the Control or Option keys, I don't remember which to get a shortcut menu. Sorry it has been a while since I used a Mac, but one of these keys shoud do the trick. Just hold down the Control or Option keys while clicking the mouse button.
