  • Looks like she is sans bra. Nice!

  • I threw my hat on stage for the beautiful Natalie. (Birmingham UK circa '88) She ignored it...

    I'll always love her though...

    Sparkhill Des Mc

  • Don't look into the camera Mr. Gustafson!

  • Poignant song, and Natalie looking good enough to eat.

  • Natalie is such a talented writer/singer. This song touches my childhood. I was that kid. My Mom's yelling, "Slap you silly" and "Don't think I won't beat you with my belt" still ring in my ears....

  • haha

  • @Dookdawg- I'm sure she's devastated you've lost interest in her. I'm surprised she can find the strength to go on.

  • Man, she used to be so cute. I was madly in love with her when she was with 10,000 Maniacs. As soon as she went solo and did that Tiger Lilly crap, I completely lost interest in her. Such a shame. 10,000 Maniacs were in their prime -- they had so many great albums left in them.

  • far, far beyond beautiful!

  • Interesting Maniacs live clip. Natalie isn't moving as crazily about the stage. One of Merchant's greatest characteristics in her youth was her ecstatic dervish dancing.

  • How come when someone is unusual or exceptional in ways you DO like, it's amazing, fantastic, all that... and when that same person is different in ways that you decide to have issue with, suddenly she's a drug addict or whatever? She sings the way she ALWAYS does, and she was dancing. So what? Still one of the best songs EVER on the subject, one of the few to EVER address the issue. CUDOS, Natalie & 10,000 Maniacs, and thanks from all the kids that people stick up for these days. You matter.

  • Please. Natalie Merchant never did heroin. The dumb stuff people come up with ...

  • The first time I heard this song I thought it was about me as it hit so close to home.

  • ...Answer me and take your time, what could be the awful crime he could do at so young in age?if i can only witness to your madness offer me some words to balance out of what i see and what i hear.oh,this cold and rude things that you do i suppose you do because he belongs to you.and instead of love and feel the warmth, you've given him these cuts and sores that dont heal in time or with age...and i want to say whats the matter here?but i dont dare say...

  • @jonned1000 wow, nice

  • i almost cry when i hear this

  • I would love to know where to get this... Incredible footage.. fantastic.

  • how can i get a copy of this great video?

i love this song. I can not find it in karaoke no where.

  • @misvides not really a karaoke track have you listened to the words

  • Thanks for posting; had never seen this before.

  • What's the matter here is that Natalie appears to be strung out on heroin and can't pronounce the words!

  • @craig732 a little dazed perhaps.. but damn.. how young..I know I was like 19- Id at least be punch drunk in 87'.. definitly high..cut her some slack =-)

  • @craig732 u know this? as i can hear the lyrics and they are understandable if she is using it does not totally diminish her performace

  • incredible. Thank you for posting.

  • That young boy without a name I'd know his face.

In this city the kid's my favorite.

I've seen him. I see him every day

  • Seen him run outside looking for a place to hide from his father,

the kid half naked and said to myself "O, what's the matter here?"

I'm tired of the excuses everbody uses, he's their kid I stay out of it,

but who gave you the right to do this?

    We live on Morgan Street;

just ten feet between and his mother, I never see her,

but her screams and cussing, I hear them every day.

  • Threats like: "If you don't mind I will beat on your behind,"

    "Slap you, slap you silly."

made me say, "O, what's the matter here?"

I'm tired of the excuses everybody uses, he's your kid, do as you see fit,

but get this through that I don't approve of what you did to you own flesh and blood.

"If you don't sit on this chair straight

I'll take this belt from around my waist and don't think that I won't use it!"

  • Answer me and take your time,

what could be the awful crime he could do at such young an age?

If I'm the only witness to your madness offer me some words to balance out what I see and what I hear.

All these cold and rude things that you do I suppose you do because he belongs to you

and instead of love, the feel of warmth you've given him these cuts and sores won't heal with time or age.

I want to say "What's the Matter here?"

    But I don't dare say.
