@MrUndergroundtattoos they SEEM better, but its often debatable. Usually they are longer, and have more a more extensive plot, with more weapons and enemies. Thing is, this usually comes at the expense of cohesion, direction, fluidity and gameplay. The HL2 Beta looked like a great game though, and I'm patiently waiting on MI + Russian Anon.

I have the Half-Life Beta, and despite that fact it's buggy as hell and many textures are missing and all it's great. There are so many stories and things that have never been recycled, though. Look at the half-life.wikia.com there are many explainations to what happened to all those levels, e.g. the Borealis, Air Exchance etc

Most people say that the reason why Valve never finished the original was because of the hacker. That's not the main reason. Valve were still in development during the hack. The reason they cut most of original concept was because the game was too long and there wouldn't be enough time for character development, the AI was buggy and hard to program and there was so many weapons, enemies, etc. that the game might have been too good.

Not really. The city 17 map distant effects was made using func_smokevolume, fog, plain sky (for same color fog) and skybox with last layers of distant houses textures

There are three important things if you want to know more about beta:

1.WC mappacks (contains over 100-150 maps, but you need HL2 beta engine and HL2 beta Hammer to compile those)

2. Half life 2 ANON version or Russian version

3. Missing info 1.5.2 contains HL2 beta files and scenes compiled into HL2 episode 2 engine.

Theese files can be found on google search (thats how I get all of them)
