5:04 am in Australia, not much else to do except watch twitter and look for videos that Martin and DC are talking about. Nasty accident that 1994 Suzuka race was for Martin, looked that up too.
@AkatsukiRei Since the material which the car is made of obiouvsly conducts electric current,or there was too much static on the car, caused by the KERS system, therefore everyone who touches a KERS installed car, wears protective rubber gloves, which prevent this from happening...HAPPY?
@marek0086 yeah but the guy that got knocked down doesnt know that. you really think he wants to try and touch it again to find out? and let that be a lesson to anyone who saw him get knocked on his ass as well.
I know its horrible and everything but from this perspective it just looks like the mechanic's touching the car suddenly triggered a childhood memory that prompted him to recoil in horror. Or something....XD
Hope he's okay though....knowing what happened, that looks nasty....

i think its not because of the KERS, i think it because of the driver switching off the car, some cars they would make a very loud sound before coming to a stop.
They were testing the KERS system before the 2009 car was built. Obviously they couldn't use KERS in 2008, but this way they could gain information about it.
Also, F1 teams know all about static and have discharging strips in the pit lane to discharge any charge that may build up and be conducted through to the metal parts of the fuel system possibly causing ignition sparks, if not dealt with.
This is clearly a put up job. Resin covered carbon fiber IS an insulator. Test it for yourself with an ohm meter ( local electronics shop - £5 to £10 ) on some kevlar sports equipment.
It is also probably not static. Static will build up on a non conducting surface, but will not be able to deliver much current to a small point such as a hand, because of the non conducting nature of the material. You get a shock off your metal car because the metal easily conducts all the charge to your hand.
No. Those are to help air flow freely through the side pod. If you imagine as the car is moving the air gets forced into the wide pod.. it would slow down the car, but if you have holes or gaps in the back of it... the air flow can travel through the side pod and also be sucked up by the engine at the same time.
that mechanic got one hell of a shock did you see the guy touch the car since he was already grounded he went flying, there was a short some where that was storing that energy the guy had bare hands while everyone else had gloves on,hahaha funny good old lucas the prince of darkness.
Every car that has it is winning the races and overtaking everyone from the start very well. Alternators usually rob the engine of some of its power to charge a battery, this system takes wasted energy from braking and stores it in the battery. Then an electric motor adds an extra 80 horsepower or so when he presses a button.
He'd be dead. Hence the "One hand in pocket' rule (look it up). It only take 3/4 of a amp thru the heart to kill ya. As you can see, it went thru his arms and thus his chest. A electrical KERS is a high-current system. Plenty of amps to kill a man several times over. This was BMW's lame way of protesting KERS.
If you look a bit closer you'll see only one hand touches the car body, the other touches the grip of the steering wheel which I doubt would conduct electricity.
While carbon fibre itself is an excellent conductor, the material the steering wheel is made of will be a carbon fibre reinforced composite with some sort of polymer matrix. I'm not sure, but I would think the material as a whole would be an insulator.
what do u think the body is made of? Its carbon fibre (same matrix/similar matrix as the body)... which mean its a conductor rather than an insulator. Because there is resin doesnt mean electricity can not travel. There isn't a whole lot of thickness to the resin there for cant insulate enough to prevent that ability to transfer a current.
50 mA, or so, can cause paralysis of the heart and/or lungs if it passes through them. Hence RCDs are set to work at 30mA and 1st aid for electric shock (after first disconnecting the victum safely from the source of the electric current!) is mouth to mouth resus and heart massage if neccessary.
As you say the "hand in the pocket" rule is a good idea. It has probably saved me from excessive shocks! Also it is a good idea to remove metal rings and jewellery
Nowt to do with KERS. Just static, which any F1 car builds up while racing. The mechanic completed the circuit to earth, as it hadn't driven over the earthing strips, causing a shock.
KERS definately exist because the project for my degree is ON KERS technology. during high speed, air-friction can cause a static charge to build up with the plastic resin in the carbon fibre. having such a high potential difference beteen bodywork and KERS unit could have cause this. notice the mechanic touches 1 side of the cockpit then completes the circuit by touching the other side and earths the charge. the units probably weren't properly or fully insulated at this stage, hence testing?
It says that the mechanic had got an electric shock due to the conductive carbon fiber body of the car. They don't know where the current come from, but it was in occasion of the first test of KERS in F1. Electric KERS can erogate currents of about 250-650 volts, so, if the problem were in it, could be very dangerous also for a human being.
