it was a combination of his throat surgery and time. elton john's baritone voice is more a result of the surgery than time, though, as his voice deepened rapidly in the following years.

it truly is remarkable that elton has been able to continue on touring and writing music with the drastic change. he hasn't even changed the keys of any of his songs. he's just dealt with it.

i would say it's not "too bad" at all, but rather "great job, elton" for sticking with it.
