I find it funny that it was planned that Magnum TA was set to replace Ric Flair as the figure head in the NWA, as he was not very exciting on any level.
Its funny cuz I always hear Ric Flair say how during the "Golden Era" that NWA really had the better in ring talent. But the Crockett's just didn't know how to market the product. I think he is half right. WWF had a shit load of stars as well but it was very cartoony. NWA was ahead of its time really. More serious style of wrestling that you see in ROH and DGUSA even ECW in the 90's. It sucks how technology has ruined wrestling. Kayfabe is long gone. Are we better for that or worse? I say worse.
ok.....Flair defended the belt against Morton, Gibson, Hawk, Animal, Nikita, Magnum, Wahoo, Ron Garvin, and Rhodes, Dusty had two shots prior to winning on 7/26/86, and Flair challenged Rhodes for the belt at the last Bash card on 8/2/86...several of Flair's title defenses were in cage matches, including the match on 7/26 when Rhodes won the belt....there were 13 cities in the Bash '86 tour
i also believe both Ron and Jimmy Garvin, Nikita, Wahoo McDaniel(in between Strap Matches with Jimmy Garvin), Magnum TA, and several others in the NWA/Crockett organization got title shots as well
@mr2damngood73 And Hawk got one of those shots. Hmmm. Interesting, I wonder if Animal got one too. I missed out on a lot, see I live in Buffalo, NY and all we had here was WWF. The NWA never got up this way so I the first time I heard of the NWA was on tv in 87 during promos for the War Games.
@Cavillier1970 I know what you mean I grew up in Irvington, NJ and the only reason I knew about it is because I had cable and we used to get TBS, so I was addicted to the WWF, NWA, AWA, WCCW, and UWF I would be outside playing football with my friends but at 6 I used to have to go in to watch the NWA saturday night show....
@d820m Thanks, I know the Flair -Hawk match is on tape/dvds and I've seen bits and pieces but never heard of Animal getting a shot. I've also seen a match between Flair and Ricky Morton of the R&R Express. I assume this was part of the 30 challenges. I can only assume Robert Gibson got one too. This seems like a pretty good idea because you dont have to see the matches (ex: Hogan vs the same people when he was champ) and it was a chance to showcase some really good wrestlers against the best.
@bjohns1975 far from it watch there DVD The Life and Death of The Road Warriors, Paul Ellering is just as much a part of the LOD as Animal & Hawk also watch the first war games match against the four horseman
@bjohns1975 He was their real life manager. He got plane tickets, car rentals and helped them with thier money. Ellering made a fortune in investments so technically he would never have to work again. He's also a member of Mensa.
@yardlet6 I tried to make it in wrestling and bombed out. But Ellering was the one of two men I would have wanted to handle my career. Mr James E Cornette was the other.
@yardlet6 Thanks for clearing that up. It's just when I think managers, Jim Cornette & Bobby Heenan immediately comes to mind. They were mouthpieces. They were actively involved in the matches. Hawk & Animal were pretty good on the mic. Having Ellering there just seemed unneccesary.
@bjohns1975 Precious Paul was the icing on the cake like a period after the sentence. If you want to hear how good Ellering was on the mike check out the promos he made for the Tommy Rich vs Buzz Sawyer "Battle of Atlanta" match.
Hawk was one of a kind. Do you have the Road Warriors DVD? The life and Death of the Road Warriors? Must see! Awesome, halarious interviews, great matches, great stories!
I have that DVD...I miss my friends [yes I know/knew both of them personally...GREAT guys!]
Hawk [Mike] is at peace in Heaven now, and Animal {Joe] is taking things as they come last I knew. [and yes that is Animal's son that plays/played a few years at LB for Ohio State #33]
Me too. I hated what the WWF did to them. One problem was Vince & Hawk didn't get along but also Vince was kinda upset that the Greatest tag team of all time (LOD) wasn't his creation. I remember Animal said this in one of the interviews.
I remember reading in one of my wrestling magazines from years ago that the Road Warriors stay with the NWA because they like it there. They like the competition. As far as i know it wasn't about the money. Also thank you for posting this promo. I loved how they broke up the Warriors & Hawk wrestled Flair for the belt & Animal teamed with Rhodes. I think it made things more interesting. It shows that individually both Warriors wouldve been great singles wrestlers also. LOD = Greatest Tag Team!!!
the road warriors gave the best promos the combination of intimidation, mean looks and attitude and toughness along with being able to understand what the hell it was they were saying made them the one of the bests, along with Flair, Magnum was pretty good, as well as the kansas jayhawks.
Jim Crockett Promotions! The Summer of 1986! The Great American Bash! Veterans Stadium, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania! It doesn't get any better than this.
No. The setup was Magnum and Koloff got into a fight during a contract signing (Magnum's MOM was there, Koloff insulted her, and T.A. jumped him). Bob Geigel reprimanded Magnum, and Magnum knocked him out. As punishment, Geigel announced the Best of Seven series. Man, I miss this era of wrestling sooooo much.
I was @ this event, Hawk got robbed Flair!

@TBirdSCIL That is your assumption and you are entitled to it.
Terry Allen did not have anywhere near the showmanship that Ric Flair had few did.
