@rubyedelman Saying this is a terrible interpretation makes it sound like you are comparing it unfavourably to others with which you are more familiar - shock of the new, perhaps? Any musical interpretation should be judged on its own merits. Art is not a race. A commenter on another of her videos said she tended to sing "on her chords" which is very interesting and a much more concise criticism.
BTW she's allowed to do what she likes with her hands, she's in the studio not on stage. b
@rubyedelman "It is amazing how singers like her do a career". I know how you feel, but don't feel the same way. Natalie's career is amazing. Comic roles, tragic roles, baroque, modern pop. The difference with me is that I love the way she sings, acts, and appears to be as a person. Yes, ruby edelman, I know how you feel because I have observed people like you off and on all my life. Disgusting, but there you are !
sehr lobenswert! although, not quite authentic, for in Bach's Reign, only Men would be allowed to sing the Cantatas at the Sunday Services, thus, even though Frau Dessay is fantastisch, i would rather a young Boy sing this Aria.
Hmmmm..... I don't think the ecclesiastical norms of Bach's time are that helpful to modern day man and woman on a spirtual journey. A young boy would be unable I believe to put across the deep meaning of the text. The Christian message is for those of whatever sexual persuasion and I can only commend to you Lorraine Hunt Lieberson's extraordinary interpretation. Listen to the recording not the live performance in Holland - it was made fairly shortly before her untimely death. God bless her.
Ahaha...as if it's still used for that purpose today, and as if it's humanly possible for a young boy! The very virtuosic "Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen" and "Ich habe genug" have been highly speculated to have been written for private settings using adult females because duh, ranges of two octaves up to high C and crazy coloratura aren't really well-handled by ten-year-old boys...

I don't think Bach is for her. It sounds weird and artificial

Apropos of nothing, I just want to comment that Dessay seems to have no need for a conductor as she does it herself... LOL.
