So i take it the little engine is a gas burner and that starts the big diesel? Kinda cool. I live about an hr away for where that monster lived and worked so long ago.
To all the people wondering how you could crank the engine without a power source: engines as big as this usually have some kind of adapter at the starter sun/pinion gear which would use planetary gear reduction, to fit a socket or hand crank onto.
@85projectcar You would probably need quite a large electric motor to start that thing, more than likely one that requires a power outlet, which would limit where you could take this motor. They say it was used to pump water, so I would say that they would want to move it all over the place.
Because of the massive vibrations put out from this engine,,men standing near it for over a minute would get raging hard-ons,,and after five minutes,,well,,you get the picture.
That's a whole lotta Torque and Horsepower...AMAZING engine... What are the ratings of that thing? That guy had some arms to pull start that 4 cylinder donkey engine... No easy task...I have a Ford Focus out there I should give a try :D
Poor little engine hardly gets any exercise unless the big one doesn't start right away LOL! But I would like to know when it was made and what the HP and RPM ratings are...
Now thats a great engine. Slow speed and long life! I seen that engine in person at several shows. The 1,200 rpm speed makes it ideal for a large 6 pole 60 HZ generator. The pony motor is the same little engine used in the Allis Chalmers model "G" rear engine tractor......Makes a Ferrari engine look like a toy!!!
Starting an engine with another engine is old school technology, Its camely called a pony motor. The old days that was the best way to start big engines like this, the big usually had some way of depressing the exhaust vavles so the pony motor couls start it.
@HouTexCowboy they have a compression relief rod that opens exhaust valves .050" it has adjustabale fingers that you set with a feeler guage alot of engines run the pony motor exhaust thru a pipe in the intake manifold to pre heat the air / this is old school but was effective as at the time battery and starter tech. was unreliable !! pony motors also have a two speed transmission and a dog clutch 2 speed is rollover then start
Ahh i love these meetings... Nevermind the actual engineeres who made them.. these guys get togeather and rev their engines.. and say... look what i bought!
In the sub I was on we had 4 Fairbanks Morse 38D81/8 engines. Two crankshafts, 10 cylinder, 20 pistons. We had a piston break and as we had drilled for a crancase explosion we did what we had to do to secure the engineroom. Never saw smoke so thick. The pistons would meet in the middle of the cylinder. I say HUH alot. Very loud.
@fool4Jesus52 Fairbanks Morse sucks at making engines. Their designs are from the 30's but yet somehow people still buy these mechanical failure-prone fuel guzzlers.
IN texas we call that a Pony Motor Starter..Used to be on a lot of larger equipment ..this one looks like it is a continental or red seal . Not rel sure..
In the UK we call the starter engine a 'donkey engine'. Sounds better than pony motor don't you think?
You know, like a donkey will carry a load where as a pony just trots around!
Diesel fuel price at May 2011 in the UK is around £1.40 a litre, Petrol is cheaper at around £1.35. There is around 3.8 litres in a US gallon and around 4.5 in a UK gallon!
We are being strangled into submission by the very people who we voted in to save us. Only the rich and celebrities mater in the UK now!!!!!
in some cases the pony motor itself would have a electric starter so a huge engine then only recquired a fairly small battery that started the pony engine or pup engine as some called these and once started this little engine one did not have to worry about draining the battery if the big engine proves to be difficult to start

I have owned (so far) 17 International trucks. ('48 to '74). Little do people know that most, if not all trucks were set up to (also) start with a crank. Ever notice those little holes in the lower grills that aligned with the front of the crankshaft? About the first thing that ever got lost w/these trucks was the crank. My '50 was the only I.H. that still had the crank behind the seat. 1/2 of an upward stroke (the correct way to start) was all it took. Make sure it's in neuteral!
It's called a "Pony Motor" (engine) Some old diesels had a carburetor, magneto and spark plugs on one side (inline engine) and diesel injection pump/injectors on the other. They would start on gas or kerosene and switch to diesel when warm. I worked on a Cad dozer that rope started a gas pony engine and it would turn over the diesel (w/comp. release on). There are a lot of things to learn about this stuff and have fun with. I had a '50 I.H. p.u. that I could crank start. They came w/cranks.
