  • Nice to hear Jack Brokensha is still with us, a monster player.

  • The Legendary Funk Brothers

  • I am sure somewhere I have heard this track with some vocals added.... 'my world is only six by six' etc sang by some females - I'm certain it's Earl and the Funk Brothers, but do you think I can find it! Anyone any ideas?

  • Yeah, we did a version in 1989 with The Andantes singing words over it, recorded in Detroit.

  • thank you - it's nice to know my memory is not playing tricks - now I gotta find a track of it!

  • I so remember leaping around to this at The Bank House near Malvern in my youth....happy days!

  • Excellent remake Ian Would it be a possibility, copyright permitting, that these excellent tracks be released on a CD or a high quality download. Not free of course so that some proceeds coulld go to the families of the great artist we have lost.

  • Wow Very cool ..

  • havent heard it in 30 + years god bless you all ..and you tube haha

  • SHEER CLASS TRACK , thankd for posting iv got old original on vinyl

  • There isn't one Earl track that I 'don't ' like - they're all absolutely fab. I'm a huge fan of instrumentals so Earl always sits high on my playlist :o)

  • Anyone here know of Jack Brokensha? He was a great vibes player that played on motown. I heard he passed away--Man he was awesome to see live--I would love to find some of his work. Thanks

  • Jack Brokensha lives in Florida, he isn't dead and still plays

  • I saw Brokensha, if I remember correctly, at Bakers Keyboard Lounge in Detroit many decades ago. He was a legend around town with a well deserved reputation for musical innovation. A master.

  • Thanks, thats where I last saw him, glad to hear he is still playing.

  • Thanks for this ,Iam from Detroit and took piano lessons from Earl at osborne high school. He was a monster on piano, and a wonderful man. I will never forget Mr chunk of funk!

  • wow...I know Im replying to your message 2 months late...

    But thats amazing.

    Your very Lucky.

  • danced to this in the 70s. great then and just as great now. norther soul was appreciated more and loved more in the 70s

  • WOW how great to hear this music. I grew up with Earl Van Dyke, he was my brother. He was a great musician and from the time I was a baby I would listen to him practice and play. He was a great brother and I miss him terribly.

  • Wow. What's your name ???

  • My name is Carol. Earl was my older brother by twelve years. We were both born in Detroit and no I am not musical, just appreciate good music.

  • Hi Carol,

I remember seeing a banner with his name along side one of the stages during a concert a long time ago and always wondered who he was.

I'm glad to hear he was a good brother to you.

There is something about this time period, the music, the cars, the clothes, the spirit, the style, the snappy class most people had back then.

There will never be another time like it.

    God Bless....................

  • Please try to find the video for The Andantes doing "Step Into My Shoes". There's a lot of Earl on that video too, including a whole solo section.

  • Very cool; thank you very much for putting this up; execellent audio. A real classic keyboard event. Thanks for your efforts, very nice for us to listen to.

  • Great cut and video!!I'm familiar with Earl but until now, none of his own recordings. Thanks for posting.the song reminds me of some cut off Magic Disco Machine's "'Disc-O-Tech from 1974/75.

  • First record i ever bought 6 by 6 and War Edwin Starr

  • Back in the 80's we would try hard to bring as much Northern soul music to the clubs we would end up in... most people didn't want to know.. but I remember playing this track and my friend and I hit the dance floor... the rest as they say is history but I didn't go home alone and we got a regular Northern night after that... this is totally my favourite track from that time.

  • I was a student at Osborn High School, during Mr.Van Dyke's tenure there. I still remember the days in school sitting behind him while he was playing the piano. He was a BEAST on those keys. Mr. Van Dyke is one of the greatest musicians ever to grace the world.

  • the best song i ever heard

  • You have to be the same Ian Levine of BLUES $ SOUL fame. You did a great mix there. A northern stomper. Thanks. Incidentally, i once came into the office at B & S. To tell you how long ago that was, the Tutankhamen exhibition was on in London. Once again, thanks.

  • This re-awakens my old love of Motown Ian, I still have "That Motown Sound" with Earl from 1965 and the Chocker Campbell one! brilliant, I bought them in 1969 in my home town Brighton UK.

    John

  • Ian

Have you sampled the drum roll on the Isley's "This Old Heart Of Mine"? I like it. *smile*

  • No the drum rolls came from some non-Motown multi tracks from the 1960s and they were legally given to me to use. Obviously they were Benny Benjamin moonlighting in another studio though.

  • I love that man... he was to Detroit Musicians what Bruce Lee was to Karate

  • ..What Bruce Lee was to the Martial Arts world.

Boss Sound! Funk Brothers will live on!

  • I can't believe you recorded Earl Van Dyke. 6X6 is one of my favorite "Funk Brothers" tunes.

  • I recorded 108 all different former acts of Motown. 108. Everyone I could find who would agree to do it.
