Even though I respect Turkey's political leadership as serious people unlike in other governments in the middle east I seriously doubt they will be able to drag Turkey anywhere near the height of western style economies.
The infrastructure is simply too bad, education is seriously lacking, too much brain drain to the west, volatile neighbours to the south, internal conflicts with kurds plus a military that moves independently, often against the government. This is not a formula for success.

Developing countries are growing faster than developed country because the difference in labour is cost very substantial, this growth will of course slow down when companies start move operation to poorer countries, say Africa.
What I mentioned below is of course ignoring the fact that the German economy is booming. It grew 3,7% last year and came with ridiciliously high growth this years first quarter(1,5% for the querter, equavilent to something like 5,5% annual growth) and unemployment has gone down in Germany even compared to the pre-crisis years while other western countries sufferred skyrocketing unemployment in the financial crisis.
The fundamental error Mr. Clark is making here is thinking that because in year 2007 Germany grew only 1% and Turkey grew 6%, that this is some fixed set of growth for the two countries which will continue forever. And its the same with the population growth, population sees highs and lows in population growths.

@FreddieBambino I don't disagree with that. We're talking about different things. The Turks think the French and Germans are opposed to their accession because of Turkey's size & economy would make them one of the big players (and of course Islam). Clearly not in 2014, but by 2040 things begin to even out. By then of course France would be bigger than Germany. Demography is destiny after all, Ger is declining and Fra is growing. This is a long term view and the Germans must be thinking about it.
Well main reason why Europe is reluctant to allow Turkey in is because they think USA wants to install them there as "trojan horse". Talks from Obama or Wes Clark to allow Turkey in will not help Turkey join in fact it will hurt their chances of getting in. UK doesnt mind since they are fine with being little brother of USA which France and Germany are not.
EU has serious problems merging 29 nations to one policy, with country like turkey in EU this would become more difficult.
Then there is also the racist factor. EU countries are not countries of immigrants like USA. Go to any video about Turkey joining EU and you will see what I mean. Regarding demography. It is impossible to make predictions like this into the future. Germany had stagnating popluation for 15 years and then had rapid increase for the next 10 years. After 100 years Germany could still have larger population than Turkey.
All these kinds of predictions are based on current development, it is almost unreal to think that 3 years ago Germany was considered as the sick economy of Europe since they are now growing as fast as teh develping world.
And notice Wes Clark even mentions this, when he says Germany as growing at 1% a year. Last year they grew 3,7% a year, much faster than the US and seem to be growing 2-3 times faster than the US this year.

I don't think this is very accurate at all. I will consider it if you give me some proof but otherwise it is nothing but a rumor or a lie. Yes the predominant religion in Turkey is 99% Muslim but there are some Jews and Christians in the country so how is it that many European countries being predominantly Christian make them any different.

Even though I respect Turkey's political leadership as serious people unlike in other governments in the middle east I seriously doubt they will be able to drag Turkey anywhere near the height of western style economies.
The infrastructure is simply too bad, education is seriously lacking, too much brain drain to the west, volatile neighbours to the south, internal conflicts with kurds plus a military that moves independently, often against the government. This is not a formula for success.

Developing countries are growing faster than developed country because the difference in labour is cost very substantial, this growth will of course slow down when companies start move operation to poorer countries, say Africa.

What I mentioned below is of course ignoring the fact that the German economy is booming. It grew 3,7% last year and came with ridiciliously high growth this years first quarter(1,5% for the querter, equavilent to something like 5,5% annual growth) and unemployment has gone down in Germany even compared to the pre-crisis years while other western countries sufferred skyrocketing unemployment in the financial crisis.

The fundamental error Mr. Clark is making here is thinking that because in year 2007 Germany grew only 1% and Turkey grew 6%, that this is some fixed set of growth for the two countries which will continue forever. And its the same with the population growth, population sees highs and lows in population growths.
Example of German population growth:
1961 = 73 million people
1971 = 78,5 m(sharp increase)
1985 = 77,5 m(decline of 1 million)
1995 = 82 million(sharp increase)
2009 = 82 million

But on this one he is dead wrong. Turkey is a upcoming power to be reckoned with, but they have at least 3-5 decades before they will be able to compare to the Germany economy, if ever.

The Turks think the French and Germans are opposed to their accession because of Turkey's size & economy would make them one of the big players (and of course Islam). Clearly not in 2014, but by 2040 things begin to even out. By then of course France would be bigger than Germany. Demography is destiny after all, Ger is declining and Fra is growing. This is a long term view and the Germans must be thinking about it.

Well main reason why Europe is reluctant to allow Turkey in is because they think USA wants to install them there as "trojan horse". Talks from Obama or Wes Clark to allow Turkey in will not help Turkey join in fact it will hurt their chances of getting in. UK doesnt mind since they are fine with being little brother of USA which France and Germany are not.
EU has serious problems merging 29 nations to one policy, with country like turkey in EU this would become more difficult.

Not only are European public opposed to it and have racist attitude towards Turkey(boosted after 9/11) but Turkey public is also full of misconseption of Europe.

Regarding demography. It is impossible to make predictions like this into the future. Germany had stagnating popluation for 15 years and then had rapid increase for the next 10 years. After 100 years Germany could still have larger population than Turkey.
All these kinds of predictions are based on current development, it is almost unreal to think that 3 years ago Germany was considered as the sick economy of Europe since they are now growing as fast as teh develping world.

1- West keeps Turkey in the Club as a full member of EU
2- West pushes Turkey out and inevitably Turkey strenghtens herself as New Ottoman Land.
