  • Klasse !!

  • Recorded 21st December 1936 in Kawasaki!

  • Written by my dear departed friend, T (for Thomas) Marvin Hatley (1905-1986). He was the musical director of the Hal Roach Studios from 1930 to 1940, wrote many specialty songs for Charley Chase and for the Hal Roach series of musicals; also wrote the score for L&H's "Them Thar Hills," their features "Way Out West," "Block-Heads," "A Chump at Oxford" and "Saps at Sea," and their indelible theme song, which Marvin always titled "Ku-Ku."

  • 'Sons of the Desert' is one of the funniest films ever. CALIFORNIA 97!!!

  • thank you very much for this recording !

  • American Jazz and Popular Music from the 1920's and 1930's! There is, and never will be anything to equal it! Music before my time, but oh, am I living it today!

  • great record l and h introduced me to the song in the 1950's on tv. great post ROGHARM

  • waaay cool!

  • Two peas in a pod-dah!

  • tHANK YOU FOR PUBBLISHING THAT SONG. LAUREL AND HARDY ARE THE BEST FOR EVER.

  • @ediunicko L&H were favourites of my Dad and I- I treasure the memories of him and I, as a kid many years ago, laughing ourselves silly over their antics, especially the Sons of the Desert- my all time favourite. Their silent flicks were a hoot too! This is one of the first tunes I learned on the ukelele 'cause its so much fun!

    Thanks for this.

  • While down on a South Sea island,

Underneath the beauty of the stars,

    I strayed upon some maidens,

Who were strumming on their guitars.

    A hula maid was dancing,

And she knew I'd found my paradise.

So this is what I told her,

As I gazed into her eyes:

  • Honolulu baby, where'd you get those eyes?

And that dark complexion, I just idolize?

Honolulu baby, where'd you get that style?

And the pretty red lips, and that sunny smile?

When you start to dance, your hula hips entrance,

When you shake it up and down.

You shake a little here, you shake a little there,

Well you got the boys going to town.

Honolulu baby, sure know your stuff.

Honolulu baby, gonna call your bluff.

  • what a lovely clear, crisp song this is

  • Beautiful recording! For you Laurel and Hardy fans, here's a fun fact: the song was written by T. Marvin Hatley, who also wrote Laurel and Hardy's theme song ("Ku-Ku" or "Dance of the Cuckoos"0.

  • Only you could find a commercial recording of this song, Roger! Your selection is superb.

  • Thanks for posting. Great fun and it sticks with you all day.

  • I use a Marantz Audio Consolette preamp(1954). The flip side is "My Melancholy Baby" by Weintraubs -- it will be in the queue for posting.
