  • I recall driving past this with my family in the early 90s, my dad would tell stories about it, like he always told stories about everything along the road. Too bad its gone.

  • @ECsponger2 Thanks for the input. Yeah, it is a shame... another part of history and Americana is gone. I wonder what started the fire?

  • Thank you for this amazing video. I was at the Hotel at a very young age. Then, in the 1980s I visited whenever they were selling items. I could kick myself for not buying anything. Now I am collecting everything that I can find. I would really like one of the chairs and I keep searching. So sad that it is no longer there.

  • @jgatsby52 The last time I was inside was the mid 1980's. I was on a date on my Harley out for a ride, and we stopped in. The place was really bad by this point Bad food and bad coffee. The bathrooms were not working. You could feel the end was near. Not too long after that, the place closed for good. I drove out several times before the fire, and it was always closed. That was when I took some of the photos. Thanks for the nice words on the video. Glad you enjoyed.

  • Thank you for bringing back the memories! Was there with my parents in the 50's, and my husband twenty or so years later. I still have my little wooden thermometer/pencil holder with "Grand View Ship Hotel, Pa" on it. Thank you for posting such a lovely video.

  • @BorninPittsburgh You are quite welcome and I'm glad you enjoyed. I have fond memories of this place too... hence, the video. Once again... thanks for the kind comments.

  • Just went by the site of the old ship the other day, so I had to see your video again. So sad, especially when you research the place. Some time back i saw a book, either on the Lincoln Highway or Weird PA, but I didn't realize all the famous people that stayed here. (I believe I read Clark Gable?) The same book said Dean Martin worked as a teenager in Ligonier, and "the" Dusenberg was in a crash on rte 30 and died in a hospital in Johnstown. So much cool history around this area...

  • Ahhh... yes... those were the days as you mentioned. (Do we sound like a couple of old coots, or what)?? LOL I've always said, if you you use that term, "those were the days"... you were turning into an old coot. (I don't know about you, but I always teased my dad about using that line, and now I use it). God help me... I'm turning into an old coot. HELLLLLPPPP. (ROFL)

  • Thanks for putting this together :-) We stopped there in 1971 so it was still a ship and in pretty good shape. It was just such a delight to see it there at the bend in the road, such a surprise. My mom probably enjoyed our delight as much as we enjoyed the experience. I always liked telling people about the ship restaurant in the Alleghenies, who cared if they believed me!

  • Yeah, that's always pretty amazing that nobody believes you when you say this place existed. Well, WE know it did... and that's all that counts. Right ?? (snickering here) Anyway, thanks for checking out the video. At least will still have the video of this grand old place.

  • wow that place was amazing...thanks for postin bud

  • Thanks for taking the time to check out the video. Yeah, it was a really cool place. I wonder why all the really cool places go up in flames?

  • @thelazycomic Who knows, its the same thing as saying why do all the great cars like sports car disappear from the car market and why are all the good people replaced by bad people...this world has really gone so sh*t, its such a shame. Im a big fan of abandoned buildings and buildings that no longer exist. I like mysteries too lol.

  • This is great. My dad took me to see this hotel way back when I was probably around 8 years old. I always remembered and wanted to go back there. Started asking friends and family about it and people thought I was nuts. (my dad died a few years back). Even my wife thought I had just imagined it or distorted this memory as a child. Stumbled across it a few days ago in a book about Pennsylvania! Started looking for youtube videos! You've got a great one here. Thanks for posting this!

  • Ya know, that's a crazy story, because I went through the same thing about people not believing me about this place, and I got the same thing about being a kid and making it more than it was. I was there with my aunt, so I asked her where it was, she told me, and I went on a mission to find it. I eventually did and took photos. There was no REAL tribute to the place on YouTube, so I had to produce one. I'm really glad that you enjoyed the production on this. Too bad that it is now gone. (sigh)

  • @thelazycomic Oh yeah, exactly. I was telling people "There was this big steamship/store thing up on a mountain road in PA somewhere my dad took me when I was really little. It was shaped like a big white boat and had this telescope up on a deck and a big stair case inside." And people would generally replay "Gosh, never heard of that place. You sure you just didn't dream that or see a movie about it when you were a kid?" Didn't remember it was a hotel.

  • Yeah, I didn't know it was a hotel until I re-discovered the place back around 1984. I took a date there for a bite to eat on the back of my Harley. We went into eat, (the place was really disgusting by this point), which is when I found out it was also a hotel. I wanted to stay there for a night, but there was no running water to the 2nd floor by this point, and call me crazy, but I like to take a shower & brush my teeth when I get up. Needless to say, we didn't stay there. Would have been cool

  • I am in my 30's and remember going there when I was younger so that would have been in the 80's. I guess by the looks of things I was there when it was not so great anymore (Ark days), but being a kid I still thought it was the coolest thing. I can only imagine what it was like years before. I think when I was there, there were even signs that said enter deck at your own risk as it was not being kept up with..Too bad I cant take my kids...Enjoyed the video, I'll be sending it on..

  • I've got 20 years on you, so I remember the first time I was there was in 1966. I remember thinking, WOW !! At that time, the place was still painted white like a real ship. We had breakfast there, and I remember the servers all had like ship uniforms on. It was really impressive. The last time I was there while open was in the mid 80's. Took a girl I was seeing out there on the back of my bike. Got there, and it sucked. No wonder she never went out with me again. LOL Thanks, & pass it on!

  • Omg! I remember those type of guardrails at 3:30! Thanks so much for this post. Great memories of this place. I only remember from about 1973 on (when I was 4). Such a short time. Noah's Ark in the 80's was pitiful. But I do have good mems from the 70's. Me and dad hunting ginseng on the ridge above, then stopping for candy and a sandwich. Change really stinks... We have lost what little culture we have for the sake of time (e.g. the turnpike)

  • Thanks for the great comment. I have 10 years on you, and I remember going there the first time in 1966. I remember the place being very grand. I didn't go back again until it was Noah's Ark. As you said, it was pitiful. I remember getting a salad at The Ark, and it had old brown lettuce in it. I saw them take somebody's coffee that was left over in a cup, and dump it back into the pot. I said, never again. and I never went back. The toilets didn't even work at that point.

  • I smiled and I cried watching your video. Such great childhood memories of that wonderful place. It was a stop with my family at least 6 times a year. Got my pencils and pencil case for school there every year. THANK YOU.

  • I'm really glad that you enjoyed the video. I thought this video would have a huge number of views, but sadly, things like this tend to get ignored on YouTube. Only the really stupid videos get notice on this site, so thank you so much for your input on this.

  • Thank You for sharing and Thanks for the memories!

  • Great stuff. That is an amazing collection. I have a video of the Ship Hotel on here that my father shot from 1972. It is nice to see it still has a place with so many people.

  • Thanks. I saw your video a while back, and it was kind of the inspiration for me to do this video. I just really wish more people out there had film footage of the place. While photos are good too, there's nothing like film to bring that place to life. Your video was much clearer than what I had to work with, but ya work with what you have. Good job on yours too.

  • What a great job you did..... again..... Simply beautiful, great music, great effects, I loved it!!

  • This place had so many mixed feelings. I went there when I was a kid, and the place was awesome. I didn't go back again until the mid 1980's, and it looked like it did when it was falling apart. I knew we were in trouble when I saw the owners dump somebody's unused coffee back into the pot. YUCK. At that point, I got up and left in disgust. The place could have been kept going, but the new owners changed the original concept too much.

  • Oh yeah... and thanks for the compliments on the video. Somebody will probably offer me a job the day after I die.

  • Great footage, cool laid-back music, and as always, outstanding video graphics.

Another great video from The Lazy Comic.

  • Thanks for the comment. Notice I said Thanks. Ha ha ha. There was just not a good video of the ship on YouTube. A blurb of this and a blah of that. So thought, it's time for a video that somebody would enjoy watching that is not just pics, but also entertaining with music and graphics. Too bad I'll be homeless or dead before I ever find my calling in this.
