The Newton was to advanced for the normal person when it came out. You have to remember the fun part was hooking into a BBS over your phone line and sending and receiving you're email. Most people didn't even know how to setup the Modem Initialization String Command Codes, much less a modem and computer. You had to dial directly to someone else in those days. I remember buying PC mag that was 2 inch thick, just to get the numbers in the back of it every month. Those were the days of discovery.

you know.. if you paid attention, the Newton handwriting recognition system got a lot better in MessagePad 130 .. which was the next model after this one, I owned one as my primary system for years. I could write in cursive or print and it seemed to work just fine. In the MessagePad 2000, eMate 300, and MessagePad 2100 the speed and apps improved greatly. Something must have went right, the eMate 300 was the inspiration for the iBook and the handwriting is Ink Prefpane in Mac OS X.

The apple newton 100 had a lot of handwriting problems, but they could easily be fixed by using newer os versions. The later ones like the 120 are really good, but the best is the newton 2000, the last one. It even had an external keyboard attachment.
