I used live right under the approach path of Helsinki-Vantaa (HEL) main runway. It was easy to tell, when a Tupolev (134 or 154) was passing over, as the engines were extremely noisy - no hush kits on those machines.

@Lvieru96 The 154 sustained more hull losses than modern jets but when you look at the poorly-equipped areas they serviced (unpaved runways etc) in the world's worst climates of Siberia/Arctic over the period concerned (they carried HALF of all Soviet passenger traffic for several decades!) no other plane would have been as reliable nor as safe. Of 37 fatal losses since 1968, six were downed in military action and the others were almost all factors unconnected with the plane.

Probably the best plane for its era & technology (mid.70th), very reliable, not shivering like fucking boing in turbelence and lands like a feather, though is not petrol efficient, but as a passenger I never gave a shit about its oil consumption.Out of almost a thousand Tupolevs built only one crashed down due to technical problems all the rest due to human mistakes. I love this aircraft.

It is flown in & out of many marginal airports and was designed to operate in severe conditions. Many thousands of flight cycles have been successfully flown by this craft, a long-time workhorse. It is slanderous of you to make that assertion. The Polish pilot was warned not to land at Smolensk North airfield due to dense fog. He made three attempts before he flew the TU-154 into a forest. The pilot could have landed under VFR conditions at several other airfields, but chose not to. There is no indication that the engines, structure, controls, or basic gear of that aircraft failed in any way. Our discussion is over.

Yes, this aircraft is aerodynamically sound and has a robust fuselage and severe-service landing gear, designed for even unpaved runways. Tupolev, the builder, has very long experience in civilian and military aircraft design. Russia-haters need to think about this: The first four-engine bomber in the world was built by Russians, long before the West had any such craft. Google: Ilya Muromets.
