The Fiat Group has moved their production of the 500 into the US, with myriad of choices and three versions to choose from. You can get one from $15,550. The most inexpensive italian car in the US since Alfa Romeo.
The 500 is NOT "peppy" in any way, it's slow. The handling wanders all over the highway, the clutch travel is WAY too long, with engagement at a tiny bit of the top, and the build quality leaves bits hanging from the headliner or pushed into the dashboard. I've driven them in US testing for a few thousand miles, and they are a cheap, tinny little car.
@rockyPants4000 Thing about the 500 is that it's not meant to be a sportscar.. It's slow, and yet the Smart was meant to be slow, not sporty. It's tiny, yet the smart was designed that way.
I don't get what the obsession with speed is, since you can't even get past the 60 mph limit, why do you need a faster car? It's useless. All a faster car gets you is status. If you don't care about sportiness, and want classiness and practicality, the 500 is for you.
fiat is back in Canada after 30 yrs. Can't wait for 500 North America edition here, with a glove box for the junk food and arm rest for North American lazy fat drivers. Ha. price is under 20M though I'm confused we offered one engine only the 1.4 though specs here rate it at 68 bhp?!?! Not 100. Doubt that fiats cars will last long here in Canada with our winters and salt. That's why fiat left Canada years ago with their tail between their legs, fiat cars rotted away w/in a handful of years
@rovfr Well Fiat's are sold in many countries across the world with different climates. They make good quality cars that last just like any other. Seriously, you talking shit some 30 years ago! Get over it
FYI: That was not an ipod connector. That usb key slot with the Microsoft symbol is so you can track your fuel efficiency and driving habits to give you better mileage and prolong the life of you 500.
@chaosmonkey79 and still it got beaten hard in the laptimes of fifth gear...the 500 abarth is way more track-focussed .
Yet it costs more, but hell every bit of extra power or sporty car costs money...really cheap cars just don't go fast and are just not good enough to have some trackfun..it's an expensive hobby.
so now you invented a new language to say numbers?
fiat is an italian brand, therefore you can't say "five-hundred", since it has always been "cinquecento". it's like translating the name of the small-crossover "Sedici" in sixteen, or "Punto" in "dot", or "Bravo" in "good".
now please get back to repair broken steering wheels on cheap Pandas.
@Jbreed2011 That's a big assumption, don't you think? How much worse could Chrysler do than they already have? The models they offer currently are butt ugly. The 300M looks like an old man's car (can you say gansta' car?) and the Sebring was transformed from a decent looking mid-size car to a bulky, gas guzzling tank. Chrysler better be going smaller because people do not want to buy those huge cars anymore. I'd rather have the Fiat 500 than anything else Chrysler has right now.
I love the fiat 500, but you could buy a used mini cooper s convertible for the same price of a normal one, or a smaller hatchback for much cheaper. It seems like alot of money for what it is.
yep, Fiat 500 is coming to north america pretty soon. Fiat took over Chrysler so most Fiat models are coming out I think around 2012, but the Fiat 500 is the first one to come to the market in 2010 I think (I hope).
I really wanna have a go in the Fiat 500 Abarth SS the one Jeremy drove on top gear. That looks insane. Too bad I live in America hahah so we don't have small cool cars like this or Peugeot 207 and I really don't like America not having Alfa Romeos.
I also like the mini. Its great to drive but quite costly against the 500. They are both great little cars. The 500 should be available in america next year so hopefully you will see many around :)
Actually I really like the 500. It does remind me of the Mini though. I find that the shape of it looks kinda like it too. But when I was growing up, owning a fiat meant repairs. Fix It Again Tony? :)
lol you must be from America. When i was growing up Fords meant Fix Or Repair Daily so i would never buy one! Fiats are far more reliable than american cars...
Be nice! :) My statement was not to offend anyone or to attack anyone. I like fiats. My friend owns a spider which I love. I agree with the old fords were not very reliable. So stop being a hater
Sorry im not being a hater....Fiat left America many years ago and quality has much improved, as has Ford and many other makes today. Its a shame most Americans still dwell on the past. Fiats were never regarded as bad in Europe. Fiat are now returning to the US through Chrysler, so Americans should think positive of the brand. You shouldnt have any concerns over quality is what I mean...
ive waited for 8 weeks for my car and those fiat fuckers tel me it isnt even made yet and i have to wait at least another 4-6 weeks. fuckin' useless! not happy!
Mini is good to drive but 500 is more fun - especially the Abarth 500 - that owns the cooper. 500 is also better looking IMO and more economical. Also mini is well overpriced and quality no better than Fiat. A panel of 58 car journalists from 22 european countries voted the 500 Euro Car of the Year 08...so this alone proves its a great little car. How can you say the 500 is a shit car? I would never say the mini is shit...I suspect you probably own a mini or maybe jealous of the 500s success?
I'm most likely getting a 500 as I have grown up with it as a kid. Even though Fiat has a bad reputation in the US, I think that the 500's quality, design, and drive ability will win those skeptics over with time. I also heard that hey might brand the Panda 4x4 as a new Jeep model so look out for that one, it should be lots of fun as well.
Too bad they didnt review the Abarth 500. The best aspect about that car is that no matter how fast you are going, it feels like your in a race- That means, no speeding tickets.....just tickets from ripping the e-brake around every corner lol

They will be available in US by Chrysler as they are now almost formed a JV. However it is far behind the Mini Cooper in terms of looks, technology, quality and prestige.
Have you ever actually driven one? The quality very good, even for Fiat, the technology is plentiful, it's just won World Car Design 2009 and it costs a LOT less than the Mini. Oh, and it's smaller on the outside but bigger on the inside.
Plus not every single person in the world drives one.
bought a nice white 1.4 16v 100nhp with some nice extras (leather, navi, sound system, 16inch) 500 here in germany. Awesome car and great build quality!
