I have a 1984 Vanagon GL. I have a problem with the intake. The air regulator on the airbox was causing the engine to knock badly and bog down when hitting the throttle hard. I took it off and put in straight tube to the thottlebody with cone filter. Still has a bot of hesitation. Can you help with advise? akciddento, please e-mail responce.

Rebuild?!? sure, what a challenge.... but swapping in a Subaru 2.0 bi turbo, or a Porsche boxer engine would be a BIT more efficient.

a porsche or sube 5 main is the opposite of efficient, in fact is a very big air sucking slob. sounds big woos the unknowing. A 3 main at 250 hp, and a modern pleasure of correct gearing, easily proves it. A 3 main hp is next to zero loss for the engine itself, it is power to wheels never measured correctly. in vid 120hp at 14 seconds is real numbers (amazing of course), it even apllies to subaru wagons of old, beetles, 912, 914.. and unironically similar goals in the quarter, around 14 seconds.

Ha I beleive the low 14s, but most ferraris run 12-13 seconds.
