  • Stupid news bitch come into her home and call her not so mild mannered who the hell do you think you are!

  • I'll bet in her day for fun they went to a lynching.

  • I'm glad Clara read this CBS Premadonna like the shallow book she is. CBS, leave our Clara alone!

  • Not so mild mannered ??? Someone slap that "news" lady

  • I'm excited about these videos. I love to cook and love others sharing wisdom. Thank you Clara for your time.

  • Clara wasn't very polite to the reporter

  • @applefanAidyn not sure who you are or how old ... but would you be polite to a reporter if you were 93 years old ?!?!? ... plz take a steep back and look at your self :D

  • Clara is great - she comes from an era when people had some better values (in many ways). Yes, we are BIG WHINERS nowadays, even with the hard times that have come upon us all globally. We could learn a lot from the frugality of the Depression era survivors! I'm glad she's on the internet. Yay Clara! :-)

  • ew i want mcdonalds it so tasty and good

  • @RobloxFreak122 fatass

  • @51iohC what do u meennn just get me a friggin big mac omdg so tastyyyy

  • FIFTY CENTS A SERVING!? Oh yes. I'm using this.

  • I was a stay home mom most of the years my kids were young. These days though we never see that as 'enough' Although a little break from kids and all that is nice--I still have to admit I really preferred to be home. I did lots to save $ including washing diapers, and we heated with wood sometimes. Gotta admit though--Clara's right--we were quite the whiners --and I don't think the newer ones have a clue what's in store for them. But they will manage.

  • My grandfather would be 94 this September. He used to say, "Count your pennies and your dollars will take care of themselves."

  • shes adorable

  • I love Clara!! I've been making her pasta with peas recipe for 3 years. Potatoes, onions, peas, pasta and I use spagetti sauce. Sprinke with some parm cheese and kids can't resist it!!

  • I feel so... weak :P i mean sure my parent didn't hire someone to take care of me and i can cook for my family, but i am nothing compared to her, she survived the depression for god sake, while i'm here whining about having too much homework. I need to really start appreciating the things i have :)

  • hysterical--this is a CBS featured video, and gets 17,000 hits in 2 years; meantime: the average Clara video on the DepressionCooking channel gets 300-500,000...oh, How the Mighty have fallen...

  • @onestupidman This is what is great about new media. You don't need millions of dollars and a studio; just good content, honesty, and love what you do.

  • My great grandmother who I loved dearly was just like her. Very fiesty & if you should not ask her opinion if you didn't want an honest answer. Standing four feet tall people feared her when she was mad. lol When she passed though there was a line around the block of people wanting to pay their respect to such an ornery, hard working, bluntly honest lady. She wasn't being rude at all. I love her honesty & we all are spoiled compared to what she went through. Look at all the whining on here?

  • That's a fine way to start! Hahaha! She rocks! And for those of you who think she is rude, think this: Call it privilege of her age. She's straightforward and that is something you don't see in these "politically correct" times. IMO she is not rude, she just says what she thinks and that is fine. Don't like my opinion Sue me!

  • my parents and 6 siblings lived thru the depression I was born in 1949 but

I grew up knowing how to cook, can , sew on a treadle sewing machine,

The young people must learn how to survive and do all these things including

grow food or they will not make it...times are going to get very hard....impossible..

God help us....if we don't get this corrupt government replaced soon

    Jan 2 , 2010

  • @vickiratzlaff Settle down, calm your nerves. We are not going to go through another great depression anytime soon. Children are learning how to cook and sew, in school even. Have you ever heard of Home Economics? Very easy stuff to perform, by the way. Cooking is a breeze and sewing isn't hard either.

  • This is the best...my mom used many of Clara's ideas that I still use...amazing....thanks Clara....hugs from afar...

  • "That's a fine way to start"...Ha ha ha ha ha ha. Clara you crack me up! Your Grandson is one lucky guy.

  • I've seen videos of Clara talking about how everyone on her street had a vegetable garden and how people would walk home from work and pick weeds to use in salad. Pretty creative I say. It was the Great Depression and the whole point is that there are ways to make food that is palatable (often delicious) that is cheap and nourishing. Supermarkets and restaurants these days would make you think if it's not gourmet (ie. EXPENSIVE) then it's no good for you. WRONG!!! Yay for people like Clara!

  • MY son's grandmother from his father's side lived through the depression and she siad she can remember when all you had for breakfast was a biscuit, a cup of coffee, and a hard boiled egg. She would eat the biscuit with the coffee and go to school and take her egg with her. when they had recess, she would run and hide behind a bush and peel that egg and eat it real fast. LOL!

Sometimes they were allowed sugar in their coffee, if they had any.

  • clara, you didn't have to be rude to that reporter. My God! I usually take issue with the annoying reporter or the reporter that constantly interrupts the one being interviewed, but man, Clara, very rude you are.

  • @openhonest She's 94 years old. I don't think Clara gives a damn. I don't think I would either.

The Italian is strong in this one.

  • @DarkMuu666 Oh, stop it! I don't care if she is 14, 24, or even 94... she was fucking rude. Plain and simple. The old battleaxe.

  • @openhonest Please. Rude is when you call the interviewer a bitch, not when you do a gentle scolding over garlic. I used to get worse than that for accidentally spilling soda.

  • @openhonest Then you are to sensitive of a pussy to even be online.

  • @openhonest I can't believe people are insulting you for saying that. You are absolutely right, she is rude. NOTHING excuses you from insulting another person, not even if you're 94.

  • @hornet579 She's probably just nervous. I doubt she means to be insensitive, as she sounds, it just comes out that way.

  • @openhonest you're a pussy lol. How's that for rude you sensitive lil douche bag.

  • Right on, DKMontoya4670!! The women of the Depression inspire me!

  • My husband told me about this being one of his favorite youtube videos. I have to agree. I love this! I also love that your grandson has captured family history, and video of his grandmother that will be not only for him but all to share. I look forward going through all your videos and trying new things. Thank you from my family to yours taking the time to capture and share these recipes and memories. I bet if the TV cooking channel had your own show it would be a hit.

  • God bless you, Clara and give you a good health and sense of humour! :) And God bless you, Chris - what a great grandson to have! Greetings from Estonia.

  • Clara' I love you and I love your book

  • She reminds me of my aunt that I recently lost, thank you so much for the postings. Even though I am half the age I enjoy so much and ate many of the same meals growing up because we were very poor and our grandparents suffered through the depression.

  • I LOVE Clara!!! I want to get her cookbook!

  • Thanks for posting from Ian Uk Enjoy your videos so much

  • I disagree partially with DKMontoya4670. I'm a mom of a 21 yr old and I stayed home with my son only a few years but enjoyed it all - cooking all our meals, using cloth diapers because they were less expensive and we had our own washer. I would have loved to stay home for many more years but went back to work. I agree - this recession can help us all focus on what's really important and learning patience again in making a home cooked meal.

  • During the depression we had mothers who were home with their children; mothers who cooked, cleaned, and were meticulous managers of the home. Today mothers would rather have others raise their children and fastfood and no one manages the home. In a way, this recession may be a godsend to teach parents how to be parents, how to be frugile, and how to make home the most important consideration.

From one old woman in Colorado.

  • Agreed. Most working mothers/wives work because they must help their husbands support the family economically. However, there are plenty of married professional women with pre-school aged children who could stay home and take care of them and the home, but choose to work any way. In these cases I wonder if their careers, material possessions, status, etc. matter more to them than their children.

  • @DKMontoya4670 Excuse me! It's not that we would rather have "others raise" our children... The FACT IS we have NO CHOICE!! If you want your family to have even the basic necessities of life, usually BOTH husband and wife need to be working... Believe me, we would rather be at home with our children but in this day and age this is something we no longer can afford to do! Sorry Clara, I hope I don't sound like I am whining ;-)

  • @DKMontoya4670 this is called evolution. women are not there to clean and stay home. men are such assholes these days they often dont have anyway choices to go out and work to put something on the table. my mother and father divorced and my dad is not giving anything to her..ya she might not be there for us but we have a house, nice clothes and something to eat every night. shes a strong woman and indepedant. its not a choice.

  • @DKMontoya4670 You'll be glad to know there are still some moms who stay at home with their kids! I do and I do the cooking, cleaning and managing of the home! I also pass on these cooking, cleaning and management abilities to my four boys!! :) My motto is "I will create marriable material!"

From one getting older woman in Colorado! :)

  • @Biohazard1944 , You are a treasure and some wife is going to love you to death!!! A male that can cook, clean and think wow, better then getting one that believe "it's my job". Yeah, we all got jobs, so...TRACK

  • @DKMontoya4670 I just recently moved to Colorado, it's wonderful, and, I totally agree, even though I'm 20 years old, and a male, I can see the world has become lazy and good hearted people are dying out :/ .

  • @MrioDInE I think that its more that there are more people in the world and harder to find good-hearted people.

  • @DKMontoya4670 Yes, but back then, you didn't have many choices, did you? You just didn't go out and become a doctor or police officer as a woman then. You kept your mouth shut and bowed to your husband and depended on him. I agree with making home and family important, but I'm SO glad I didn't live back then. I want to be treated as a human being who is allowed to have opportunities to grow and do good work as something other than a housewife and mother.

  • @DKMontoya4670

I stayed home with my kids, but it wasn't easy and with the tax structure today it's been made more difficult, plus if you make that choice in todays day and age you will probably face some lonely times, because not to many make that choice. There are even times when other women would look down on my choice. My kids all turned out well though, they never got into trouble.

  • "No, I don't want any" and that's why she's 94. She knows when to refuse food that's not needed unlike those that are over-weight. Caloric restriction is the only proven way to extend life!

  • Love your videos Clara Your the greatest! You also look so very young to me..

  • LOL,"Im comparison, do you think we're whiners?"

    Clara: "Oh yes."

    XD

  • Hahaha!! But Clara's right, though. The Depression was absolute hell on ordinary families. Money ran out, families were evicted into the streets by landlords, they ran out of money for food, utilities & clothing. They did anything to survive. Stories tell of men working two, three or four part-time jobs a week to put food on their family's tables, because no one business could afford fulltime employees. People ate whatever they could find, buy, shoot or run down with their cars.

  • Thanks Christopher and Clara for sharing your food on a budget and great stories with the world.

  • I love you Clara. Do you have a recipe for rice pudding or baked egg custard?

  • Hi from El Paso, Texas.
