  • Maybe, but simtek was constructed with safety regulation really different from today's cars. One other biggest difference is the energy abrospsion capability of the nosecone, then really poor. I remember also that RR car had the whole fron and right side panel destroyed. That car was really unsafe, also Andrea Montermini suffered a broken foot and maybe also Gounon did. Unfortunately RR drove into the villeneuve with the front wind under the car and thus went right into the wall.

  • lafguer is correct, if the HANS device was around Ratzenberger would almost be certain to have survived, forget the nosecone, his legs were not injured, he died from a broken neck by hiting the wall head-on! The cars are sure much stronger now, that helps also, maybe if the cockpit sides had been higher then Senna may have also survived although probably not!

  • Sidepods energy absobtion capability at that time was null. Also with a rrestraint system the deceleration would be eventually be fatal also with a neck protection system

  • Forget the sidepods on this occasion because the impact was almost head-on The HANS device saves lives and that is fact! Humans can survive huge deceleration as proved this accident to Kubica and many others. However humans cannot survive severe factures of the spine as happened to Ratzenger & Villeneuve. HANS saves lifes, the system would be implemented otherwise.

  • there were many reports about him having broken his leg/foot after the race on the news as though it was definite but they never retracted the statements, it was as though it was never said, he just instantly recovered!

  • I saw this crash live i was sitting in the grandstand behind where he hit the wall we thought he was dead when he hit tho. it was an incredible experience

  • the cars are made to break away at the wings and wheel and absorb as much impact as possible .. which is why the safety cell is left wot you can c him stiing in .. incredibly strong cars ! but still my heart sank when i saw it tho . u think oh no he is in a bad way !!

  • not sure why senna is refered to. Senna died after part of the suspension pierced his helmet. These still, and always will break in such an impact.
