God on our side was meant as an interpretation as who does not, regardless of which religion ur from. heard it from the boss himself vh1 storytellers checkit
This song reminds me of the two tours I did in Iraq and how u find God when u are in high stressed bad situations. It also reminds me that things are always going to be different. As if a part of me is gone or what not.
I always interpreted this as athiest at the least, positively anti-thiest would be more accurate. In context, the reference to having 'god on your side' is just an additional mistake in the reasoning; one more exploited prejudice. It is also a clear reference to Dylan's 'With God on Our Side" and the way that national identity and misplaced idealism will be abused for political purposes
Yeah, it is a codified prose-filled mantra, with a clear reference with the struggles of the proletariat in 'do what do to survive'; the song could be a touchstone about the African-American's plight and struggle at the hands of their evil religious white masters.
Don't know shit about the stuggle of black people in America, I know a bit about war though, I was born in & grew up in one, did my best to bring an end to it and thank fuck its over now. Don't know many war songs that are just fucking songs, maybe "Camouflage" or some such shit. Do you really think that Springsteen wouid write this song as album filler,to make your toe tap, then name the album that? Or is this more dumbing down of the USA cos "thinking hurts my head"? u listened to the album?
Served in the USMC, have the album, listen to the song when acquantainces die, like yesterday. There is a difference between 'dumbing down' and avoiding 'gee look at me I recalled what the New Yorker said' correctspeak garbage.
Lost the first (not the last) family member on the 22nd Aug 1972, it was a Tuesday, he'd began in a new posting on the Monday, at least we had something to bury, his mate's wife didn't. As your prefer plain speech, the only thing that could make such deaths any more meaningless would be a refusal to learn from them. Plainer still, a good place to start growing the fuck up, would be to take the chip off. We all have to live with the decisions we make, putting a uniform on is just one of them.
I and many others tire from people trying to justify and sell their positions out of anything and everything. "See that wad of used chewing gum Bobby? Clearly that tells us to love God more". I'm just done.
That's a fair comment, I can see that there would be ample causation for it within the US. However 'question everything' (gods too) isn't trying to sell, its a disposition, otherwise: "what we wish, we readily believe, and what we ourselves think, we imagine others think also" (Julius Caeser)
Any one read the Gunslinger Series from written by Stephen King? First heard this song on the radio a coupla years after reading it and was totally remembering different parts of the book. Perfect selection for a soundtrack if a movie is ever made from these books
Maybe if you leave politics out of it & just listen to the lyrics. I think you can take alot from this song that will relate to every day life. "Fear is a powerful thing, it'll turn your heart black you can trust", that line means alot to me & the reason has nothing to do with politics. Springsteen is a living legend & this is probably my favourite Springsteen song of all because of the lyrics & the way they are delivered
tolerance! what does stfu stand for? is that tolerance?..im not american so i cant be pigeon holed as either.. as for that "interpretation" it is springsteens you'll find it on vh1 storytellers.. i dont know why your upset that last comment was'nt political but i assume your comment is! so i suppose you could ask yourself, why are you so defensive? fear??
"fear is a powerful thing.. it will turn your heart black you can trust... it'll take your god filled soul.... fill it with devils and dust". to many americans living in constant fear, a fear thats created by your own! no one else... when people are afraid ther easily manipulated.. open your eyes
how in the hell do you get that interpretation from this song? and if this is true, it can be just as easily applied to all the fear monger lefty greenies out there. how about these "fears" that they propagate to us daily: GLOBAL WARMING / NO NUCLEAR PLANTS / NO DDT / AFRICAN AIDS / STEM CELL just remember, hero...if religion is man made, so is secularism. practice your "tolerance" and stfu

With the whole hidden mic thing, the only way you can get the anunciation like at 4:10 is with a mic directly next to your mouth. there is no way there is a hidden mic here unless its in his harmonica! The sound of words just wouldnt be that tight. I cant say for streets as I haven't checked but there is simply no way humanly possible that this performance is the same as the recorded one. Sorry
This is one of my favorite Springsteen songs. He's the best Lyricist I've ever heard. No one can write a song and put music to it like the Boss. God bless him and his beautiful talent.
yeah sure, he had a hidden mic sure!, cant you diference between playing in an empty saloon or one without people, where is the eco, there should be eco, it is clearly they record the music first IN A STUDIO, and then they made the video;
Springsteen has picked up where Dylan left off in the 60's. Dylan writes about Civil Rights and racial strife. Springsteen talks about the plight of the American worker and the end of the Industrial age in America. Both write very well and both are very good at what they do.
It might sound similar, but Blood Brothers is a Springsteen song and melody, so he's not gonna be worried if another song he writes sounds a bit similar. Bruce has a back catalogue of hundreds of songs, and some songs share certain lyrics, and likewise some might share a similar melody. He's not ripping anyone off. This is a great song. And a very important song.
Every time i listen to Bruce plays his harmonica I think it's fantastic, It's the best harmonica player in the world, because his songs are wonderful!
This is the most beautiful song I have ever listened to...its simple....honest...nothing more, nothing less....its not about war..its not about peace....its about being human and living in the restless world we are now trying to escape...theres no sense of direction...only a deep bitterness and a pure heart hoping for something better...
thats what makes devil and dust a real piece of art.
Totally agree with you,no one could of said it better! I feel bad for people who say this is just another song and cannot hear what we hear and can't see what we see. This song is just as much special to me now as to when it first came out. TIMELESS!!
this is by far my fav springsteen song. he hit the nail on the head, he just sumed up what every soldier in every war goes through. he sings this with such passion & emotion that you could almost picture your self standing in that battle field witnessing all that he's singing about. great song from a fantastic songwriter. keep rocking bruce.
Love this song and love the Boss,No one can come near him, he's a class act and has been for thirty five years. This latest tour was every bit a good as 84-85 world tour.
Going to a Bruce gig should be on everyones bucket list.
JFAYIII: I am sorry to hear about your freind. He is exactly what Bruce is talking about in this song. We our government denies citizens medication over insurance but we can send all our money elsewhere to destry countries or help countries who in fact turn on us. Someday we will all have enough of this. Lets all get out and vote. I think this election is the deciding fate of this counrty because we are digging a deep ditch.
He needed to be hired full time to get insurance for his medication, he was kept temp for over a year. During that time he had 2 seizures at work. After the 2nd we didn't see him again.
He was killed when 2 cops were called to his mom's house for a domestic disturbance. He charged them with a knife. All he needed was his meds, a break, some help.
When the reaper's cloak brushes me like it did today, I turn this song on.

why does everyone get worked up over this song and argue about it ,its a great song enjoy it for what it his ,its just a song who cares what its about.
well thats the funny thing about music, everyone has their own interpretation. i for one though, think that that is probably one of the last meanings of this song.
this song is fucking awesome. I play guitar and harmonica myself. If anyone don't like it, why listen to it? go fuck yourselfs. I love heavy metal country and bruce. Hip hop and fucking emo music sucks balls. emos go cut yourselfs.
Ha! Fuck you I agree with you in a sense as if I had to chose one it would be Dylan, however to talk of Springsteen's lyrics as 'just empty americana' shows you dont know much about the subject...no offence
that's a pretty bold statement from a cock muncher. i like the way you try to exert your totalitarian influence there. i'm pretty sure i can like other music and hate this. also i'm gay cos i don't like bruce springsteen? your powers of deduction amaze me
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Yes actually i made a good statement. You are gay cause you don't like Bruce Springsteen. And if you don't like this music, what other kinds of music do you listen to? That faggy ass hip hop shit that's not even really music just faggots trying to make shit rhyme. Or that heavy metal fucking shit that you pretty much need to be on drugs do actually enjoy it. Yeah so fuck you faggot, go die.
I honestly think you need therapy if you're getting this upset over a youtube vid. Hip-hop - wrong. Metal -wrong. not bothered talkin to you anymore, and i'm sick of hearin this song wvery time i come here. good luck!
how did u end up on this page? if u dont like the boss's music, why are u on this page? and slaggin dylan? whats that all about. perhaps you have written music that would put both bruce and bob to shame....although i doubt it. but i could be wrong.
Just checked your page to see your musical talents. i assume u do have musical talents since u see fit to bad mouth two of the greatest singer/songwriters ever to grace this planet. a planet that would be much better off without your random flaming.
Hmmm. That seems like a perfectly reasonable statement. Sadly, I cannot comment further because (unlike you, FarmerDude84) I'm still conducting my research on the musical integrity if every single musician throughout the history of mankind.
Um, Bob Dylan is American isn't he =P Don't get me wrong, there's plenty wrong with the world, but pinning it on one culture just isn't fair. What about the absolute indifference of the majority of us Canadians?
The problem isn't stupidity, it's a lack of compassion from a century of conditioning.
I got my finger on the trigger
But I don't know who to trust
When I look into your eyes
There's just devils and dust.

The song is about Bush and how he translated the events of 9/11 into justifying an invasion of Iraq. Devils and dust = Terrorists and sand.

Bruce played this in F at the Grammy's, he IS and will ALWAYS be the BOSS, and the harmonica kicks ass in my opinion.

Sadly, I think it's about war....
binloved 3 years ago
well thats the funny thing about music, everyone has their own interpretation. i for one though, think that that is probably one of the last meanings of this song.
DurotarLord 3 years ago
No it's the first, the song is about a troubled American soldier serving in Iraq.
MoreGilmour 3 years ago 2
yes maybe it's about war, or anything else.lyrics are great and touching

marios1286 3 years ago
is this song dedicated to Bob Dylan?? Bruce sings the name "Bobbie" in the song a couple of times. great song.
for me, magic (his new album) is by far the best thing he did this decade.
dylanmartin 3 years ago
no, it is an anti war song. Bobby is a common name in America

Woo! kitty's got claws! springsteens lyrics and music lack the potency of dylans, putting it mildly. Its just empty americana!
Beorn86 3 years ago
Ha! Fuck you I agree with you in a sense as if I had to chose one it would be Dylan, however to talk of Springsteen's lyrics as 'just empty americana' shows you dont know much about the subject...no offence
Seandaman99 3 years ago 3
Yeah you fucking suck balls. If you don't like this music, you fucking don't like music at all you fucking fag.
Jake939393 3 years ago
that's a pretty bold statement from a cock muncher. i like the way you try to exert your totalitarian influence there. i'm pretty sure i can like other music and hate this. also i'm gay cos i don't like bruce springsteen? your powers of deduction amaze me
Beorn86 3 years ago

Yes actually i made a good statement. You are gay cause you don't like Bruce Springsteen. And if you don't like this music, what other kinds of music do you listen to? That faggy ass hip hop shit that's not even really music just faggots trying to make shit rhyme. Or that heavy metal fucking shit that you pretty much need to be on drugs do actually enjoy it. Yeah so fuck you faggot, go die.
Jake939393 3 years ago
I honestly think you need therapy if you're getting this upset over a youtube vid. Hip-hop - wrong. Metal -wrong. not bothered talkin to you anymore, and i'm sick of hearin this song wvery time i come here. good luck!

k fuck you faggot, you don't deserve to live if you don't like this music. ssuck onnnnnnn myyyyyy peeeeeeeeeeenniiiiiiissssssssssssssss.
Jake939393 3 years ago
how did u end up on this page? if u dont like the boss's music, why are u on this page? and slaggin dylan? whats that all about. perhaps you have written music that would put both bruce and bob to shame....although i doubt it. but i could be wrong.
Just checked your page to see your musical talents. i assume u do have musical talents since u see fit to bad mouth two of the greatest singer/songwriters ever to grace this planet. a planet that would be much better off without your random flaming.

You obviously havent been paying attention, bob is my hero. a friend showed me to this page and i expressed my opinion. cant handle that?

The only musician to have kept his musical integrity and not sold out.The Boss rules!!
FarmerDude84 3 years ago 14
Hmmm. That seems like a perfectly reasonable statement. Sadly, I cannot comment further because (unlike you, FarmerDude84) I'm still conducting my research on the musical integrity if every single musician throughout the history of mankind.

what a special talent but for song writing skills i dont think he is even in bob dylans league

bob dylans songs are weird and dont make sence
dv122 3 years ago
you must be american, you see you need a brain too understand dylan, fool
12werblue 3 years ago
Um, Bob Dylan is American isn't he =P Don't get me wrong, there's plenty wrong with the world, but pinning it on one culture just isn't fair. What about the absolute indifference of the majority of us Canadians?
The problem isn't stupidity, it's a lack of compassion from a century of conditioning.

Wonderfully simple song...he is one of our national poets.
ScooterNerd 3 years ago 7
I have been saying this very thing for years. I think he has been massively underated for song writing abilities.
