This is the first video by you I've seen. Loved the dialogue! Also, I think your channel name is brilliant! Always great to meet another gay believer.
while i applaud your attempt to parody the asinine and disgusting ads that NOM has turned out, i must admit that i cringed at a couple of the voice-overs in particular (one of the black male at the end, and the other of the spanish-speaking male) that had racist overtones. i think those serve only to further divide communities of color and the queer community instead of build coalitions, as well as make those of us who identify as both (ie queer people of color) even more invisible and put down.
I would certainly apologize to ANYBODY that found ANYTHING about my video offensive. The voice of the black male at the end is my actual voice. That is how I speak. If you were having a conversation with me, you would hear the same inflections, etc. The voice of the Hispanic male was done with one of my dearest friends there who is both gay and Hispanic.
Correction, I would not apologize to offending the people that made the original video or to any other hate-filled group.
hey bornagayn. i appreciate this dialogue. i was actually not referring to the actual voices, as i would not assume who is behind the voiceovers, how they identify racially or sound, when i don't know them.
what i was more referring to was the comments of the black male making the connection of gay rights to sitting in the back of the bus. while parallels between movements can be useful at times, sound-bite ways of referencing those connections and parallels can be co-optive and harmful
and in terms of the voiceover for the spanish-speaking male, i think i was just taken aback that it felt (I reiterate that that's just how it felt to me) more mocking of the fact that he was speaking spanish than anything else.
again, i want to say thank you for being willing to engage in dialogue. i think that conversations on race and racism within the queer community are severely lacking, and i don't pretend to be the expert on it. just someone willing to talk about it and learn more.
Have you heard the original voices on the original video?
I am actually appalled by any minority discriminating against another. Since I did not edit the video content, all speech (which was me) had to be done in the time frame allocated by the actual video. I was also pointing out that this discrimination was a part of our recent history that we are now ashamed of. Hopefully people will understand the reference. If you'd like to see some great statements against intolerance, you should
I'm a little confused. I went to visit your page (very nice) and I watched your top favorite video which is also a parody of the same video. The Hispanic man in it had a very derogatory exagerated spanish accent, so I'm not sure why you thought mine was offensive.
well, i do want to say that that's not my "top" favorite, it's just the latest one that i favorited. & while i have a ton of favorite videos on that list, it doesn't mean i feel that every second of content is devoid of "issues". part of my process currently is learning to voice myself, and i don't do it every single time i want to, and that's why it's a process. i hope that my inability or choice not to engage EVERY single time is not a hindrance here.
sometimes those choices are strictly about time (i don't have the time to engage EVERY single time) other times it's about energy, or the whole "picking your battles", or it's about who the other person might be and if i feel safe about the conversation, or whether i think i might be effective or not. there are a whole host of reasons/excuses. i'm imperfect and this is part of imperfection.
I don't want you to think that I was attacking you at all. I wasn't (and I'm still not). I was just confused that you had a favorite video containing the very thing that concerned you about my video.
We are all imperfect. Anybody that claims differently is a liar.
I'm one guy without the huge money backing that many of the parodies have. I am trying to fight the hate and prejudice that is out there in my own little way. I have become friends with a few on YouTube that are trying to do
i like the divorce thing at the end! So true!

the very same thing (take a look at some of my favorite videos and the other videos made by those people).
If you look at my video of GodGunsGutsGlory, you will see some of the backward-thinking hate-mongers that are out there.
