@BrotherBones1111 Really? Shihan has been a martial artist for over half a century, so I am inclined to think you're idea of distance with a weapon was instilled by an American.
The teacher or 先生 in this video has great maai, so I humbly think. His Maai 間合いrelevant time and space plus distance of two or more combatants is something I hope to master, someday. I only lived and trained on Okinawa for 10 years so my limited understanding of 古武道/Kobudo my be showing but I would pay may top dollar or 円/Yen to train with him. Thank you for your time. おす
wot a great vid i learn this kata from your demo alone thanks for posting do u have any more bo kata or where i get a dvd of you thanks please reply to my inbox
All of ours are 6ft long, but Shureido sells one that is 6'6" (probably meant for tall Westerners). Yours doesn't fit the weapon's full name, "roku shaku bo" - a shaku is one bamboo node, and these run about one foot.
I study both karate and kobudo in one combined, so I have a habit of lumping the two. It's just easier for me to avoid explaining to people who usually don't care for the different nuances.
We have a combined class, too, but the class seperates when the exercise part is done (although we will do things together, like san chin kata, if she feels we all need san chin dachi practice!)
Actually, I am not into martial arts, but Shihan convinced me to start for my health. I have watched other bo clips on YouTube, but moves that are properly done for some senseis may get a correction in *our* class; it is hard enough to get them to an acceptable level for Shihan without adding variables.
Even after a couple hundred classes, I can still tell all my hojo-undo need work, and I have barely learned the first kata (there are a total of 7 of those), and I haven't even listed any of the *other* weapons needed to advance!
Distancing is awful when you look at it. Don't think this school has a long history with staff looking at it.

this video is great, just what i was looking for, the bo staff should be the same height as you if it wast standing up touching the ground.
TimeSplitter64 2 years ago
No, the bo is 6 feet long, so it may be more or less than your height - the full name is "roku shaku bo", specifying its length.

That's a large backdrop like those used by professional videographers and photographers - notice the floor doesn't "meet" the wall!

Nice kata, I practice a similar version under Tamayose Hidemi in Okinawan Ryu Kyu Kobudo.

Finally, some real karate.
Bayani1012 4 years ago
It's kobudo - even though karate is also from Okinawa, they are two seperate disciplines. This style is called Matayoshi Ryu.
