Strictly speaking It's a banjolele (banjo-ukulele or ukulele-banjo) - a cross between a banjo and a ukulele. Basically it is a ukulele with the body of a banjo. It looks like a short armed banjo, but it's essentially a ukulele because it has 4 strings and is tuned and played like a ukulele rather than a banjo.
Interesting, I would say the uke solo is not dubbed on this - the perforance seems more real and unproduced than in later films. A great insight into his playing technique and a wonderful song :)
That's one of the reasons I have a soft spot for these early Mancunian movies, shame the dude cut off the great end title music of a swinging version of "Stick To Your Mother" a film-only George Formby song never issued on record!

On one recording he sings "playing with mi uke" as opposed to "playing on mi uke" in this more polite version. Good clean filth!

My heart, it jumped with joy. I could see it was a boy for he had a ....ukulele in his hand!
All his songs are so freaking funny!!! I love how rude he is without actually being rude, if that makes sense!

@hexag1 - I think the innuendo is definitely there, yes.

@hexag1 Formby's songs are awash with innuendo. Like "is he kissing her under the nose... or under the arch where the sweet william grows" :D

very unique for the time. Who else played the Ukulele in that style at the time? we're talking 1935 here. Very unique

@whiskeyshan
Actually, the banjo ukulele was very popular in that time period. but no one quite played the uke in the split stroke style that Formby pioneered
