the problem is that latino is not a race but culture. i mean non-hispanic pretty much means anglo regardless if its black or white. also latinos racially overlap with other groups. i mean black r closer to15-20% if counting black latinos who often get counted as some other race. latinos of all races are about 20% and increasing. whites r 70% including latinos. native people are about 10% and they mostly latinos and asians are like 5% with least latinos.

@Jwriter4 Yeah my dad worked for the census back in the 70's and worked in Minneapolis, Detroit, Chicago, Oakland and Richmond(Ca) and i'm going to be working for the census in a few weeks once we start the door knocks. Saying that NOT everybody participates is true but it is generally 7-10% of the population and lots of those areas are rural areas that harder to get to and are mostly white. Even so you'd havta assume that EVERYBODY that didnt partake were black to greatly change the numbers.

I guess this depends on what you're defining as Latino. I guess you mean Latino American. In terms of language, however, any of those who speak the Latin derived languages such as Spanish, French or Portuguese could be considered Latino as well. Also many "Latinos" could be counted as white, for example biracial Cubans. One of my friends is Cuban but she looks more white. There are too many technicalities that's why I think judgment on what defines race should be done away with.
Black is an ethnicity as well since there is no scientific basis for race. If you believe in race then you also accept the fact that a black person and a white person are genetically different, therefore no person is equal. Race is only skin deep.

Yes, social change was more apt to happen because of the civil rights movement, but only because it was closer to home (DC). But it didn't factor in Latinos at all, nor any other non-black persons who lived predominantly on the west coast, far from Washington. Out of sight out of mind. I'm not discrediting the movement, but I wouldn't go so far as to call other movements pseudo. Change is change regardless of how much attention it gets.

i agree with a lot of what you're saying, in terms of voting power. most people who talk about voting forget about, or know NOTHING about the electorial college. the electorial college has more pull in the voting process than individuals showing up at voting booths. also, for blacks and latinos to get caught up 'who has more power' is a distraction and it sets up people of color to stay at each other's throats. it serves to neutralize the political power of BOTH groups.

the problem is that latino is not a race but culture. i mean non-hispanic pretty much means anglo regardless if its black or white. also latinos racially overlap with other groups. i mean black r closer to15-20% if counting black latinos who often get counted as some other race. latinos of all races are about 20% and increasing. whites r 70% including latinos. native people are about 10% and they mostly latinos and asians are like 5% with least latinos.

@Jwriter4 Yeah my dad worked for the census back in the 70's and worked in Minneapolis, Detroit, Chicago, Oakland and Richmond(Ca) and i'm going to be working for the census in a few weeks once we start the door knocks. Saying that NOT everybody participates is true but it is generally 7-10% of the population and lots of those areas are rural areas that harder to get to and are mostly white. Even so you'd havta assume that EVERYBODY that didnt partake were black to greatly change the numbers.

The Southern United States is about 30 percent black; however the West, New England, and Upper Midwest are well over 80 percent white.

I guess this depends on what you're defining as Latino. I guess you mean Latino American. In terms of language, however, any of those who speak the Latin derived languages such as Spanish, French or Portuguese could be considered Latino as well. Also many "Latinos" could be counted as white, for example biracial Cubans. One of my friends is Cuban but she looks more white. There are too many technicalities that's why I think judgment on what defines race should be done away with.

Only because Latinos came about via Spanish achievement. It was a rebuttal I was making about Latinos/Hispanics being here (US) prior to Blacks. That is all. The whole point of my argument isn't to take culture or importance away from anyone, which Jwriter seems to be trying to do, but to show that each culture has had an "experience" and "contribution" which has been just as influential and historical as the Black experience.

You obviously have not read your history books if you can honestly say that migrant latinos need to pay homage to blacks for what they did in the 60's. Ever hear of Caesar Chavez? Reies Lopez Tijerina? Rodolfo Gonzalez? Felix Longoria? What about Mendez vs. Westminster or Hernandez vs. Texas? Also your claim about latinos not being "hung, lynched, or bitten by dogs" is completely ignorant and inaccurate. Latinos faced the same thing in the Southwest as blacks faced in the South.

Yes, social change was more apt to happen because of the civil rights movement, but only because it was closer to home (DC). But it didn't factor in Latinos at all, nor any other non-black persons who lived predominantly on the west coast, far from Washington. Out of sight out of mind. I'm not discrediting the movement, but I wouldn't go so far as to call other movements pseudo. Change is change regardless of how much attention it gets.

i agree with a lot of what you're saying, in terms of voting power. most people who talk about voting forget about, or know NOTHING about the electorial college. the electorial college has more pull in the voting process than individuals showing up at voting booths. also, for blacks and latinos to get caught up 'who has more power' is a distraction and it sets up people of color to stay at each other's throats. it serves to neutralize the political power of BOTH groups.

Before anyone says anything, if some Black person was derogatory towards a latino and they decided to play the other side of the coin that I'm playing, then I don't blame them either to be honest.
If there's any coalition, I honestly believe that it's non-Blacks vs Blacks. We did pave the way for civil rights though, but I doubt that we'll get much respect for it.
