  • Big Red.

  • Andrew Beyer reworked Secretariat's stats in 2011 using updated methodology. He gave him a speed rating of 139 which is incredible to the say the least.

  • IT WOULD BE HARD TO COUNT SHAM OUT OF THE TRIPLE CROWN IF BIG RED HAD NOT BEEN IN IT BUT SHAM WAS BEATEN BADLEY BY EVERY HORSE IN THE BELMONT RACE, A GREAT HORSE NO DOUBT BUT TRIPLE CROWN I DON'T KNOW- GEORGE

I WOUD LOVE TO FIND SOME WEBSIGHJTS WITH PONCHO'S REMARKS ON ALL 3 RACES AND WHAT HE THOUGHT OF BIG RED.

  • Awe inspiring. Who's says Racehorses are not athletes!!!!

  • I love how 90% of the comments are about Secretariat, 9% are about how fast he is, and 1% is about poor old Sham. Don't get me wrong, I still like Secretariat, but barely anyone seems to show any sympathy for Sham. Its not like he was the worlds worst horse ever. Its not his fault he had to race against Secretariat, hes just a horse doing his job.

  • @ElectricJumperPony very true, had Sham been born one year sooner or later, probably be a triple crown winner

  • epic horse, but my heart beats still for Ruffian. R.I.P. Ruffian...:(

  • I love the movie and the speed he had is amazing! I think he is the best horse in the world and if he were still alive today i would wish to own him.

    :D

  • His best move was in this race but his best race was the Belmont Stakes. Not into horse racing because Im only 14, but this horse is amazing.

  • Imagine beeing on of the other jockeys. Suddenly a brown bullet just flew forward.

  • A once in a lifetime horse. Without doubt a thing of beauty.

  • Secretariat is the best racehorse of all time.No questions asked.GO SECRETARIAT!!!

  • Secretariat put on weight in training for the Preakness. Laurin said the Girth that he wore in the Derby no longer big enough to go around his belly.. They had to go & buy a bigger one.

  • They were right when they said "he moved like a Tremendous Machine"

  • I know Shane Sellers very well. I played guitar on his album and traveled with him a bit. If you ask him who is the greatest horse to ever live he says Secretariat!

  • I don't care how many of you will bash me for this statement but I will say it. Secretariat is the best horse I've ever seen or hear about. I know a lot of ppl will claim that Man O War is better because of his record. But no horse can do what secretariat does...plus alot of the race he lost wasn't his fault. It was jockey error or they horse was sick. Secretariat is truly God's Horse....

  • @zXSwordXz I agree 110%!

  • Sham reminds me of Easy Goer, could have been one of the greats but wrong damn year.

  • @pickoffking It makes me sad to see what happened to Sham in the Belmont. Simply had his heart ripped out by Secretariat.

  • @TristanandIsolt: Agreed. If it wasn't for Secretariat, there is little doubt Sham would have won the Triple Crown of 1973 and be regarded as an all-time champion. Considering his heart was physically much smaller than that of Secretariat you gotta admire the pure fighting spirit of Sham. Just look at the huge distances he put between himself and the rest of the field (Secretariat excluded) during different stages of all three Triple Crown races.

  • That is just absolutely incredible.

  • @babygirllily I agree.... you must see the movie when it comes out on October 8th to see how director Randall Wallace thinks about this race and how he fits it into the movie, google Baltimore Sun Secretariat Preakness pivotal role and see what comes up.

  • I always said his times in the derby & preakness would have been 2/5 or more faster if he had the opportunity to hug the rail. Most of his races he was always going around horses wide but still broke records. He was more than unbelievable!

  • nice vid plz check out my vids. awsome horse hes my 2nd fave famous race horse right after seabiscuit i love him.

  • on the vid here @ 1:00 sec is dead last @ 1:07 abreast 2 others all at the rear then @1:27 sec takes the lead last to 1st in 20 secs to this day i cant help but pull for sham in all three tc races but the outcomes are always the same sec broke sham in the belmont any other year sham is a legend
  • I know exactly how you feel. Have you read Nack's bio and 8 pg intense description of Belmont? The jockey behind Pincay and Sham said he cld see Sham's legs getting rubbery at 3/4 mi mark when Sec pulled away. He was starting to disintegrate. I was sick when I read that, but thankful that Pincay sensed it and stopped pushing him. He said Sham wasn't same horse as in Derby and Preakness. Panco shldn't have pushed him. Mr. Sommers cried and then went and got drunk.

  • The move on the stretch? What about coming from dead last to the front on the OUTSIDE OF A TURN??? That's the most insane thing I've ever seen in any kind of racing, be it horse, car, human, or even sailing. Blistering speed and composure. Nothing like it. It's more insane (IMO) than Secretariat's 31-length lead when he won the triple crown at Belmont. Wonder what time he would have turned in had he hugged the rail towards the front of the pack out of the chute like he did at Belmont???

  • @carnivalwrestler Exactly. This is what sports is about, what gives my spine tingles and even brings tears to my eyes. There's no way that horse should have been able to do that, and he not only did it but seemingly did it with ease, and as a virtual warmup to the last 50%+ of the race. Unreal.

  • Who needed the timer anyhow? Did we ever doubt the Big Red? He was the King of Racehorses!

Let's give credit to the wonderful Sham who would've been the year's Triple Crown winner if it weren't for Secretariat.

  • Thanks for posting this..Secretariat..the time for this race.."forever in doubt" because of the electronic timer...did Secretariat really ever need it? No horse could match him...throw the timer out!!

Also let's give credit to the wonderful Sham who would of been the horse to win, but had to race with Big Red.

  • Simply awesome Memory. Never realized what it would mean to me when my parents took me to Claiborne farms and I got to see and pet Big Red...beautiful show off and friendly. I would't have got near Riva Ridge or Bold Forbes at the time. Great Vid..thanks Inspirational Horse - no doubt.

  • great video, thanks

  • he's my horses garate grandfather!!!

  • On the backstretch he runs past them like the other horses are standing still...and Secretariat was on the outside. What a great horse =)

  • What a horse. O_o

  • to move that move and that speed on the back stretch was super natural. Being last and making that move and not tiring shows that this horse was super natural, that move alone will never be matched. What a horse and what a creature of God.

  • Well said. I couldn't possibly agree with you more. Thanks for the comments.

  • @majesticbob2007 Secretariat is super natural he had a heart twice the size of the rest of the horses hearts

  • wow,the horse of the century still leaves me breathless watching the reruns of his tripple crown!

  • I'm ignorant of horses and horse racing but watching this...seeing Red make his move was and is just breathtaking for me...

  • I agree, Big Red's move here was one of the best ever, maybe THE best. Amazing really, considering he never tired.

  • He whipped through that field like the proverbial hot knife through butter... on a sharp Pimlico turn, no less.

    Smooth editing, btw!

  • He sure did. There's nothing quite like it.

I can't take any credit for the fine editing work on this clip.

It is just as I found it.

    Glad you liked it.

    Take care.

  • Hey CF,

Divine is an absolutely correct term for this..This video really lets you see him turning the on button to the max...thanks for this. I just love this horse...always have...

  • Yes, Big Red enraptures the spirit and captures hearts like no other.

    Happy you liked it.

    Have a great day.

  • This was great because you can really see in this video how incredible that move was. What an amazing horse. His awesome talent is undeniable - when else have you seen anything like this? Together with the Belmont - this horse was just divine.

  • Divine...that's a perfect word to describe Secretariat.

    Thanks for watching and commenting.

    Take care.

  • Read where he was left-footed in his stride naturally so the first turn suited him. Awesome race.

  • Yes, being left-footed was another trait that made it seem so effortless for him in the turns. His rush to the lead here was breath-taking. He really was the mostest hoss, in my humble opinion. Take care.

  • I finally realized that you can really see his big move begin on this video, fm right hand side, the whole thing, with that leap forward, as in famous photo on front of 2nd edition of Woolf's book.

  • Yes, I agree. The wide camera angle was terrific. It's amazing how wide he really got when beside the other two. It's my favourite move of Secretariat's for sure. Thanks for posting. Take care.

  • He's going for the lead and it's RIGHT NOW he wants it!

His most exciting race ever. His Belmont was amazing. This was exciting.

  • Glad you liked it, Carly. I loved this race too. What a blazing kick around the field that was! God bless.
