@kyoko277 I was like, "What a moron, I'd like to see him willingly put his finger within the mandibles of the beasts." The scientist that is, and they use them for both propulsion both for escaping danger and for flinging intruders. They will also use the amazing force to crush their prey.
Wow, thank you! I finally know what kind of ant I have in my yard! They freaked me out the first time I saw them, they are so much larger than the common little black ants we usually have here in Goodyear Arizona. I've noticed they also seem to make a "clicking" noise, possibly from their mandibles closing? Also, they have a very strong odor to them if you capture or agitate one. I've picked them up in a paper towel and they've left green goo behind that smells. Exact same ant, though, for sure.
I got my own mini colony of i think 9 trapjaw ants. their colour is black and i find them under rocks and in the soil in the philippines but i don't know what species they are.

I find these all the time in my bathroom. I live in singapore and these ants will piss you off, when u see one of these in the shower it kinda freaks you out.

I believed the jaws were for propulsion, not for biting.
Also, that scientists who said they couldn't hurt is is really conceited.
