  • Don't even think about clicking on half of the below videos. It will depress the crap out of you.

  • "...Others say, it flies a bit like a...brick."

  • the video work on this is terrible, but i love it anyway.

  • Need More Views...!!

  • I'm from melbourne, great job with the accent. RIP Mr. Adams

  • He is right the world will be ok without us. We need the world. We are bound to extinction now because we kill it like a cancer growing ever faster.

  • Best debunking of religion ever heard of at 13:30. lol

  • I love his response to the first question. The guy asks something similar too ...is the australian carbon tax a good idea... and his response is ... i don't know but just be aware of what it ends up doing

  • Such a beautiful talk!

Once I watched this video again with my family I couldn't stop thinking about the package on this guy, now you can't un-see it >.<

  • Twig Technology.

    Perfect description lol!

  • rest in peace Douglas, you made the world a better place

  • I wonder if a deeply believing Christian can have a chance to appreciate Douglas wonderful brilliance. The answer is probably forty-two, but whenever I come to that conclution... I forget my question :S

  • Absolutely delightful video, filled with hidden gems!

  • Bye Douglas. You were awesome

  • just days before his sudden death aged 49. x

  • or mistake was that we came down from the trees.....or perhaps it was coming out of the ocean in the first place......anyway thanks for the fish

  • please add subtitles

  • He was just amazing and a great author, miss him

  • I love you Doulas Adams God Speed , i love hitchhikers so much . But obviously last chance to see is a far more important book . R.I.P D A .

  • @MyVorpal...since he didn't believe in God, why would you wish him 'God Speed'?

    D

  • @HusbandandWifeShow you mad? or just thick? most people dont mean "god bless you" and "god speed" so literary

  • @willykittylovescokis...I'll ignore answering your snide infantile questions and simple chalk it up to a 'regret' on your part. But yes, I am pretty thick. *winks* I asked because I knew much about this man, which you obviously don't, and would know he would not appreciate anyone saying those words to him. Did I mention I met him before? Now, sit in your corner and let grown folk continue to speak.

    D-bo

  • loved the part about the water fossits

  • The ideal is to not have any effect. The ideal is to not be.

  • Truly remarkable man, loved his preception of life.

  • 22 people are brain fuckin´ damaged

  • yes he left far too soon.

  • I am amazed.... 1. Because it took me about 3 minutes to realize that Mr. Adams was ,once again, screwing with mind and 2. Once I realized his goof .. I couldn't understand it anymore.

  • big words hurt my brain!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Summary: aye-aye lemur of Madagascar (Madagascar broke out from Gondwana). Venomous snakes and spiders. Dr. Struan Keith Sutherland of Melbourne. Komodo dragon of Indonesia. Kakapo (land parrot) of New Zealand (NZ sprung up from the sea). The podocarp tree. Yangtze river dolphin. Buying condoms in Shanghai. Building dams: "beaver genes". Thru science and technology, we now understand the "deep mistery" of LIFE. And ironically we are destroying our environment. (DNA: we miss you.)

  • great man

  • Naturally the nerd who asks the towel question is going to laugh like a total dipshit.

  • This was very informative, I might even pick up that hitchhiker book of his. Really nice approach, not preachy at all like a lot of far left nutters. THis man is highly intelligent, and really brings his point across well. :)

  • "Fucking huge, I think is the technical term"...

    Genius!

  • @PhilipvKlaassen I was going to like that comment until I noticed 42 other people had. How could I mess that up?

  • Funny about animals...we are the only animal that thinks other animals can be somehow funny

  • Comment removed

  • stupid youtube wont let me like it more than once!!!!......

  • I wonder if everyone *twigged* on to the fact that those monkeys he's talking about are us? :o) (Sorry for the bad pun).

  • My father met douglas adams once. That means I have but a mere 3 degrees of separation between me and the divine.

  • @MrJivePirate Can we please meet so I can have 4?

  • @viktoriavass San Francisco?

  • @MrJivePirate London!

  • @MrJivePirate

As Douglas was an atheist I think he would have thought it rather amusing to be referred to be in a line towards anything seen as "divine"... ;-)

  • @HejSwedenify Silly me to write an amusing comment on a comedian's video!

  • I can't believe that I missed towel day.

  • why would you dislike this? hate humor? hate a deceased man? hate critically endangered animals? people are weird. Happy Towel day

  • Happy Towel Day!!!

  • "Do I just have to be near it?" He was telling the future!

  • I'll leave you all alone now to enjoy Mr. Adams. You are free to your views. But what I am saying is correct. Compare to German or Russian literature. Compare current British Literature to the Renaissance or Victorian or Age of Englightenment. One-Hundred years from now, this man will be lucky to be a footnote in the Norton Anthology.

  • @uberhandle You are right that his writing is not on par with other writings, but that does not make him any less intelligent or his writing any less enjoyable. Of course people like Chekhov and Dostoevsky were better writers than Douglas Adams, I don't think anyone disputes that. Most writers cannot write like Milton but that does not make them less relevant. Jonathan Swift wrote at Adams' level and he is much more than a footnote.

  • Know thyself in latin is "false" so is it wrong to know yourself or is it false in thinking you know thyself

  • @uberhandle, there's a difference between disliking someone's work and brutally bashing it, and I think the line has been sufficiently crossed. There's no good reason for posting upwards of 10 posts, most of them one lined seemingly witty (perhaps you found them witty) responses to things the audience found funny that you didn't. Perhaps you're simply incapable of understand half of the british humor of the past half a century, but I'd prefer not to know. Shut the fuck up you uneducated monkey.

  • @TehTyg13 I am British and this is British humor.

  • Great lecture, but it makes me sad that almost every question in the Q/A was about the Guide. I meen, the books are awesome, but the lecture was about a totally different book and topic.

The only question coming close to the topic was the moron that didn't like SUVs.

Anyway, the real topic of the lecture was really interesting and thoughtful!

  • RIP Mr. Adams. And also when you're dead, RIP then too.

  • @uberhandle I'd insult you, but I have a feeling that you've probably been insulted yourself your whole life for being an ass, and maybe your an ass bc of some childhood thing, and it's become one of those viscious cycles, the more your insulted, the more your an ass, and the more your insulted, and so on, and now you only know how to be negative and communicate via insults and putting happy people down. That's gotta suck...at least you're probably blissfully ignorant about how sucky it all is.

  • @ThisSentenceIsFalse Typical that Americans would view this as high literature. While at the same time most can barely even speak English anymore, and have deteriorated into speaking some form of English Ebonics or pidgen English. "That's gotta suck" "how sucky it all is" To you that's the normal way of speaking English. I rest my case.

  • Comment removed

  • @ThisSentenceIsFalse

Wow -- I'd insult you, but. . . i don't psychoanalyze people I've never met over the Internet. No, life is good when you can be yourself and not have to base your views and opinions on whether or not some strangers or aquaintences will or will not approve or your views. What really must suck is folks who can't express their views because they're worried about who might feel insulted.

  • @uberhandle Are you insulted because I insulted you for insulting Douglass Adams and now you're implying that I shouldn't insult you for that? Because you're just trying to express your opinion afterall. Look dude, you insult a guy I like, I'm gonna insult you in return, don't act surprised over that. I insult you, I expect you to return fire, you'd be a pussy if you didn't. So at least you're not a pussy, you're just a snob. Now insult me back and let's have some fun doing it!

  • @ThisSentenceIsFalse I feel I should help with insulting @uberhandle but I can't help but feel I have to take a trip back to the early development of twig technology... which I won't because @uberhandle is mm... fucking stupid

  • At one time, the English were the best writers in the world. It was a long way down.

  • Thanks for all the fish! ha ha ha ha, good one, oh wait I can't breath, Thanks for all the fish, stop please, ha ha ha ha.

  • can we have a moment of silence for the dolphins? I am so sad.

  • shhhhhh children be very very quiet now, what's that sound? oh yes that's just John Milton and Francis Bacon weeping in their graves.

  • Foxes ears, and very weird eyes, marty feldman eyes, oh that was funny too, ha ha ha ha marty feldman eyes. Oh that one always gets me. Stop, please, you're killed me, "marty feldman eyes"

  • Oh wow now it's getting very exciting, ha ha, all the things you can do with twigs. A new creature has arrived. Thank you for waking me up, oh no, what will happen to the limas?! Startling advances in twig technology, ha ha ha ha ha, the people laughed at that. I'm not that bright obviously, why did they laugh at "startling advances in twig technology".

  • Wake me up when it's over.

  • @uberhandle I think we prefer you to stay asleep

  • So long Mr. Adams... And thanks for all the fish!

  • thnx mr. adams & R.I.P

  • If it came from Douglas Adams, regardless of medium, you can rest assure that it was brilliant.

  • Love his books. Rip. Great author and script writer.

  • An absolutely charming and intellegent man showing the true brilliance of his being with this warm, intuative, clever, witty and methodical deliverance of his experiences and knowledge. A masterpiece and a joy to watch.

  • Towelday in Saint-Petersburg, Russia. PM.

  • that dolphin, like this great man, are both gone. The world is changing too fast.

  • The man that got me to read. No joke, H2G2 was the first book (and series) that I ever read cover to cover.

Like a lot of my heroes, death came far too quickly for him.

  • @Exton1

what are you talking about? This is nothing about capitalism, communism, Marxism, he's talking about the price of gas not reflecting its true cost because it REALLY DOESN'T. When you buy your gas you are probably paying for the cost of its extraction, refinement, and, cost of transportation. What you are not paying for is the economic damage that occurs when it causes acid rain. You are not paying for the loss of habitat that the oil companies destroyed getting you that gas.

  • @kr4ckas - not to mention the economic cost oil has when it causes lace doilies to fall out of the sky, drowning indigenous populations of unicorns.

  • @Exton1

Here might be something you might understand. Chevron is being sued for like 100 billion dollars by Indigenous peoples in Ecuador for fucking up their village. It isn't until legal systems makes these guys pay for what they do to the planet that the true price of gas is realized. That is the true price of gas that this loony Marxist is talking about.

  • @Exton1 No, that's not how Marxist theory works at all. Please read a book.

  • 19 people don't know where their towels are...

Douglas, the universe is a bit less funny without you in it.

  • Douglas was not only a great writer, he was an outstanding speaker. There are very few things (movies included) where I have been gripped for almost 1.5hrs. And probably the most informative 1.5 hrs I have sat thru. It's a tragic shame that he died so young. I recently re-watched the original BBC series of THHGTTG and about 2 mins after it ended I found myself here again.

  • Can someone please bring this man back to life? I can't live without Marvin anymore!

  • Life is a cruel fucking joke. As soon as you get used to the idea of being alive, you die. I hate the fact that I was ever born. Im resentful towards my parents for being here. I never wanted to have to go through this terrible practical joke of all of a sudden out of nowhere, popping up in this world and being alive ..... and then before you know it, time flies and youre dead the next moment, and knowing all along that its coming. Its NOT COOL to be forced to go thru this.

  • @emilshere Then die?

  • @emilshere orrr.... you just have no sense of humour ;). peace!

(i don't usually greet like that, it's especially for you, hah)

  • @odolany hehehe

  • @emilshere Stop whining... You should be thankful youre alive...XD

  • @Kakarott191 LOL..... why, praytell

  • @emilshere You dont like life?? Wierd... Im not trying to be mean or something dude but if you realy dont like your life then why not go and kill yourself?? Its that simple!!! Get it????

  • @emilshere Don't die. Just do something that will help make this life worth something.

  • @emilshere then why are u still alive? i mean, why don't you just kill yourself?

  • @AnyaTH killing oneself does not solve the problem of not wanting to exist in the first place. Its too late for that.

  • @emilshere are you sure? are you some kind of life-death traveller, capable of will ever after death? show me how you do it, because i'll be pleased to learn!

  • Of course, now we know that the Yangtze River Dolphin is extinct as we know it... I remember I had the Wide World of Animals CD as a kid, and I would watch the River Dolphin and Anaconda videos over and over... haha. You will be missed, Mr. Adams, just as much as any of the species on our precious Earth.

  • This is the best video on YouTube - by far. So interesting, entertaining, educational and damn funny.

  • Happy Birthday, Mr. Adams. Great lecture, thanks for posting!

  • Thank you for the upload I really enjoyed it.

  • And now douglas and the Yangtze river dophin are both gone.

  • so long and thanks for all the fish

  • this guy is good sperker!

  • That guy. Love his stuff. I can't finish watching this.

  • OMG! I clicked on this by mistake but could not stop watching! I love this guy!

  • 18:00 Dr. Struan Sutherland, that's my grandfather!

he had a hydroponic greenhouse! it took him 12 years to develop that anti venom. and i still have that bow tie!

  • @zeekeyspacey Now THAT is cool.

  • 19 people apparently do not know where their towel is

  • @jlkirsch ....dont panic !

  • @jlkirsch 22 people seem to have lost their towel.......

  • 9:45 ...it was full of ocean... ...the whole point of the boat was to keep the ocean on the outside...

    :D

    HE IS JUST GREAT

  • "had there been copies of Twig User Magazine in those days these creatures would have been lining up for it"

  • Fantastic! Without a doubt one of the best lectures Ive seen.

  • @RayWilliamJohnston Holy crap. It's Ray William Johnston. Watching an hour-and-a-half-long Douglas Adams video. My mind has been blown.

  • @OrderLogicMachine who the fuck is ray william johnston?

  • @ReverendNillerz I had him confused for RayWilliamJohnson, a YouTuber of some note. I missed the 't'.

  • @OrderLogicMachine ...Okay, you spelled his name wrong, but still, who the fuck is RayWilliamJohnson then?

  • @ReverendNillerz Dude, just search for that name. He's a guy who makes videos. What do you want?

  • @OrderLogicMachine what do you mean what do I want? Didn't you get the fucking memo from my fucking question?

  • THIS is why i don't buy into creationism. Sure it takes an hour and a half to get to the point, but still faster and FAR more informative than reading the bible.

  • Haha 19 dislikes. "That's not in the Bible so it's not real, get over yourself you rational cunt."

  • I wish he had taken more than 3 questions. His intelligence is charming.

  • Comment removed

  • Absolute legend!

  • i love twig technology XD

  • "...ehh, fucking HUGE, I think is the technical term..." lol! miss him terribly, he was so special...

  • Absolutely, wonderfully, magnificently, fantastically awesome...is one heck of an understatement.

  • Do you really think he would have bothered to learn your language?

Oddly enough, not, you funny little blank-faced thing.

Don't forget that tea was once an endangered species ; )

That's why they sent in the gunboats.

Look, wherever people speak English, charm, gin and flattery will work on the survivors.

Harvest humor from the misunderstandings, and watch while he flatters you by insulting three separate cultures while speaking in English and saying "we".

  • God the questions at the end were retarded... sadly...

  • @voidz I also think that there were more important questions to be put, like more to the subject, but he did have answers to give, even to those questions, like the thing with the towel and he made a good point about digital watches :)

  • Froody

  • What an awesome man, gone much too soon from us!

  • Do I knee it???? hahaaaa 1:25

  • I love when he talks about food in his books it always makes me hungry (Best part of mostly harmless was the Sand witch parts) If he was alive right now I hope he would have had a fine food review show on the discovery channel "Douglas Adams tells us how to dine and dash at the worlds most expensive restaurants and where donuts come from as we tour " Douglas Adams Guide to Earth dining"

  • "Startling advances in twig technology"... Brilliant!

  • @damianhoward I love how nearly every line Doug says could easily be the title of a new Hitchhiker's book.

  • great talk man

  • Rest in peace, Douglas. You have gone much to soon. In Mind we remain close until the end of the universe.

  • Such truth conveyed with such subtlety! What appear as anecdotes about animals are parables on human nature. This man was a giant, in stature and in intellect.

  • Man, I hope that hoopy frood Douglas Adams knows where his towel is now, wherever he is.

  • jeez stay in the light doug

  • It makes me very sad to realize that those dolphins are gone.

  • @Hovemond Apparently there was one spotted in 2007, so not quite.

  • lets say hypothetically if tomorrow we discover the partical that is dark matter and prove it and some how we prove what is driving dark energy and prove it, what do we do the day after tomorrow ?

  • @7orqu3 We use it to make weapons, destroy human kind and after that... well... We become dark matter? :P

  • @7orqu3 Find the variety of other hypothesized particles in the standard model?

  • This is a person that I would like to have been able to sit down with and have a talk with over a few beers. Unfortunately this will never happen. However I can still imagine what that would be like and say;

"So long and thanks fort all the fish"

(because if a topic is "fishy ", you know what you better look for)

[And the reason that there are 42 rules of cricket is just a coincidence, right?]

  • great man. we all miss u douglas!

  • Happy 42 Day! As I enjoy my cup of tea today, with the cream added before the water so that the milk does not scald, I wonder if L. Ron Hubbard could create his own religion, then why couldn't Mr. Adams? C'est La Vie. So Long, Douglas, and thanks for all the brilliance

  • Happy 42 Day! As I enjoy my cup of tea today, with the cream added before the water so that the milk does not scald, I wonder if L. Ron Hubbard can create his own religion, then why can't Mr. Adams?

  • @sententioetexcrucior Presumably because Mr. Adams was an atheist.

  • @JesusKrispies Not only that, but he was good, had too much of a conscience to go around starting religions and things. You only do that if you're really keen on exploiting the gullible.

  • Happy 42 Day, Douglas. We all miss you very much. I raise my cup of brown liquid not entirely unlike tea.

  • Anyone who thinks this video is boring and unfunny obviously has a phenomenal grasp on sarcasm and dry wit

  • @INeverEmailPeopleBac You're thinking it wrong. Open your mind and your mind will love you. Beware of the ants thought.

  • @mittROMNEY666 Some YouTube videos actually require a attention span of more then half a second, and an IQ higher then that of a stone, to understand.

YouTube should def put up a warning so people like you can just go about their day in blissful ignorance.

  • Douglas Adams was an amazing guy. We'll miss him! I really enjoyed this video.

  • fantastic.

  • Thanks for making this available.

  • An absolute star, what a tragedy he shuffled off when he did. Splendid show Douglas!

  • How is the book called he is reading from?

  • @nikodormius Many things are taken from his own book: Last Chance to See (ISBN 0-330-32002-5)

I havent watched the whole thing, if he actually literally reads from a book I might be wrong.

  • Brilliant.
