Of course people like Chekhov and Dostoevsky were better writers than Douglas Adams, I don't think anyone disputes that. Most writers cannot write like Milton but that does not make them less relevant. Jonathan Swift wrote at Adams' level and he is much more than a footnote.

Douglas was not only a great writer, he was an outstanding speaker. There are very few things (movies included) where I have been gripped for almost 1.5hrs. And probably the most informative 1.5 hrs I have sat thru. It's a tragic shame that he died so young. I recently re-watched the original BBC series of THHGTTG and about 2 mins after it ended I found myself here again.
