The taxicab printer sound can be explained away as almost a snake like sound so it matches a monster like being. The mechanical chains sound also used comes across now as misdirection. I think that's what prompted incorrect guesses that nanobots and such made up the Smoke Monster.

If you re-watch the first episode, the morning after the crash a bunch of people are talking and some red-shirt says it sounded familiar then someone randomly asks them where they're from and she answers "the Bronx"

Geez, I just found this video one day after I posted a similar one with the exact same finding... I guess it means that for Locke, after the crash, ultimately the inner and outer world came to a perfect match (he says so in one of the episodes in season 1: "Let's just say I'm not lost anymore"), thus he essentially does not differenciate himself from the Island. (That's why the monster never hurts him and that's why he cannot be killed in any ways.)
