The song has been around from at least 1870, which was way before Leadbelly's day, although the song is frequently associated with him. It was originally an Appalachian folk song. I've heard so many different variations, and it goes by many different names --- "In the Pines," "Black Girl," and "Where Did You Sleep Last Night." One of my favorite covers is by Long John Baldry on his "It Ain't Easy" album, circa mid 1960's with Rod Stewart and Reginald Dwight--- known now as Elton John.
Lead Belly was an old folk/blues singer. Played a 12 string. Sang probably about when this song was written LOL. I only knew of the bluegrass version of it.
@SavageGreywolf Thanks! I'm bad at history LOL I can remember my grandpa singing it when he was out fiddling around in the shed. He and his brothers had a band when they were younger and were one of the first bands to play on our oldest radio station here.
Fabulous job!

Sounds great. This reminds me more of Bill Monroe's rendition of this tune. Very nice!

Just tried Nirvanas' version. It sucked. I don't know who the hell Leadbelly is. This is the way this song is supposed to sound.

@TheJcp1234
By saying "I don't know who the hell Leadbelly is" you have exposed your ignorance. If you don't know then find out?

@Capnsensible80 I listened to some Leadbelly and it was horrible. I can't even call that music. It was shit.

Well congrats on being judgemental and narrow-minded then, I guess.

Definitely like Leadbelly and Nirvana's version better. This version makes it seem gleeful and the song isn't....
