  • McEnroe is a genius, one of 2-3 geniuses to ever play any sport. So all his faults can and must be forgiven.

  • Mc was a genius, nothing else.

  • In case anyone's wondering, "Va te faire f----- (foutre)" means "fuck off". That's what got McEnroe defaulted.

  • thanks for uploading that history of sports...

  • Lol @ his intimidating a linesman, such as in the manner in which he did it on that particular occasion here. Such a rofl, really.

  • 0:54 Keith Richards.

  • @McGuywer Totally...

  • Pernforns was really shocked:-)))

  • Not that I would be an apologist for him ... or say that he didn't deserve what he got ... but I had always heard that part of the "reason" behind his many escapades was rooted in: for as highly trained as these athletes were (they were the top tier tennis players in the world), the referees were often not very well trained, and in many cases did their job on a loosely part-time basis ... Mac felt it was an affront that he and others trained so hard, but the refs didn't. Any truth to this?

  • McEnroe is a insidious bastard!

  • Rule had changed, after penalty point, it was default. McEnroe didn't know.

  • its just sooooo great to see him disqualified!

Never in my life have I been so pleased to see someone issued a default

In fact come to think of it, I have only ever seen one other tennis player disqualified and that was Jimmy Connors - coincidently another American. but it so much more fun to see Macenmouth getting the boot.

  • @acorntechnique Yes but the problem is that we came to see tennis, and that is not what we had, it is better to resume the game, we are here to watch some tennis and get entertained, even if he truly deserved it. Same thing for Connors in 86. Don't worry, all the Americans are not like that. Look at Chang, Sampras, Roddick, Ashe, Courier, Blake, Gerulaitis: no default in their career.

  • @sidh05

    haha Roddick

even tho roddick never got defaulted hes just as bad

  • You refer to Mac the mouth as a 'naughty genius.' and deride the Australians for inviting someone with his reputation.

Perhaps they invited him in the knowledge that he would mouth off, so they could enjoy the task of firing him off court.

    Have you considered that option?

Because that's what I would have done.

That obnoxious mouthy spoiled little American brat would never have had a tennis career if umpires had done the right thing more often!

  • Sorry this guy has a big problem. He can´t stand a lose! And if he is going to lose everyone is responsible but never himself.

  • @Brokensword131 Yes but don't be too hard on him, we gotta respect these players, they are struggling to offer us some great entertaining tennis, don't judge on their behavior. We like them more for their tennis skills than for their attitude or their private life.

  • HAHAHA suck shit JERK you got what you deserved. You embarassed the sport & got away with it cos your a yank. How can you compare this clown to say Pat Rafter,Roger Federer,Rafael Nadal,Agassi etc.If only they had of drug tested him we would have all been saved from. this crap

  • Typical yank. Big ego, but learned his lesson after this game which bought his ego back down to the ground.

  • @ManFromMelbourne if we want to make absurd generalizations, you are like every other country, jealous of the US and your country is full of descendants of a bunch of ignorant convicts that got put on the worst island they could find

  • @CaptAwesome7

If I were you I'd give up arguing about this now because it's obvious you're on a losing run.

John McEnroe was an obnoxious little brat who deserved nothing because of his unsportsmanlike like attitude.

John McEnroe embraced all that was and is bad about the US and none of that which was or is good.

It's a huge shame that umpires worldwide didn't have the balls to stand up to him more often.

I truly LOVED the way the umpire issued the default without even a shred of regret.

  • Did Pernfors shake his hand...

  • i dont know french

  • @mr91skuttis

    Prata ni Svenska?

  • @acorntechnique jajemen!!

  • Bullying linesman and throwing hissyfits cost him the game. He's a prat.

  • gay umpieres....

  • Technically, I think he had a good argument there. He can only get a violation for racquet abuse if he has to change racquets , but the umpire penalized him immediately. Although, I can't excuse his behavior with the linesman.

  • @nocalsteve Actually, the "rule" about having to change rackets warranting a CV is only a guideline, and it has become more prevalent only in the last few years, as umpires have become less and less stringent. Back in the day just throwing your racket against the ground warranting a CV for racket abuse.

I do think that nowadays, he wouldn't be penalized for it, and I do think that the more relaxed attitude umpires have developed is a good thing.

  • I like John but it annoyed me how he acts like a big baby every match.

  • McEnroe actually confesses in his book that if he had been defaulted earlier in his career, it might have done him some good in terms of curbing his behaviour. Still he was a tremendous talent and great to watch in terms of his artistry.

  • fucking judge fucking cunt fuck this jude motherfucking hater you can throw your raket in tennis come one now its big are knowone get hur just the raket

  • mcenroe was a poor sport sorry cry baby bitch. if he was black acting like that all the racist cowards would be having a field day with their scared ignorant asses. if he actually might have learned to shut the fuck up and play he might be remembered for being a great player instead of how most remember him for his girlie outburst. yes he put people in the seats, everyone luvs to see people make an ass out of themselves and he wouldnt let them down.

  • Wow imagine if Federer did this....

  • After the defalult the supporters of both players shouted about 30 min "We want right - we want John!"

  • @PeteHamHam, the fans seemed pretty happy when the umpire announced Mcenroes default :)

  • Then I suggest you tell Mcenroe off for breaking the rules, not the umpires for upholding them, which is THEIR FUCKING JOB.

  • Relax kids .. Time out for both of you !

  • if i was the umpire or the linesman..im goin to crash him....

  • stfu ignorant fuck.

  • no one agrees with your shit here. you are a pimple on the great mac's ass.

  • @sharpasaneraser and you're just a stinking filthy cunt.

  • don't judge all cunts to be stinking and filthy just because every time you pull out of your mom your dick needs an autoclave.

skjohnson reeks of his mother's stinky filthy cunt!!!! read all about it!!!!

  • @sharpasaneraser ooh...you're such a big man using all those nasty words....

Fuck you and all that you stand for. The world would be a better place if you were hit by a hammer when you were born....you're the biggest cunt on the face of the earth....fuck you mate.

  • right back atya, CUNT!!!

  • may a camel shit in your father's mouth before he french-kisses you goodnight, skjohnson1603.

  • All you people praising him?? I don't give a shit how good he is or was. He was a dick them...and he's still a dick now!

  • Comment removed

  • McEnroe was beginning to be on the way done here and officials didn't feel the need to tolerate his abuse any longer

  • I was watching this live back then. What he said to the umpire was very obscene. The ref said he would have defaulted him even without earlier warnings.

  • McEnroe's the man..

  • mcenroe put people in the seats, and his reputation for naughtiness preceded him (especially by '90). ao officials should not have been surprised by his outbursts. mac was a fucking artist with his racket. people come to see this unique presence that comes along once every 50 yrs. ao officials should not have invited him if they did not want to tolerate his obstreperous genius.

  • @gardenvarietypenis Yeah they have trouble filling seats at the Australian Open...

Jeez every one of those sentences save the one about him being good is total bs

  • @gardenvarietypenis He was a tennis genius and the umpire did a disservice to tennis fans around the world when defaulting him during his last few great years. What a shame and those moments stolen from the fans that day.

  • @gardenvarietypenis it wasn't an invite though, not that i disagree with you. Grand slams and master tournaments are not based on "invites", they're mandatory you retard for all top 20 players.

  • @gabe228 "invite" is an informal way of saying access granted via ranking, doesn't imply they sent out letters of invitation and waited for an rsvp, you retard.

but, with a name like "gabe" you know it's an officious jew trying to get his nickel's worth.

  • @gardenvarietypenis "invite" has never been used as an informal way of "ACCESS VIA RANKING", it's a professional job retard, PROFESSIONAL, it's THEIR JOB TO ENTER grandslams. Stop trying to dig yourself out of ur own ape-brain

  • @gabe228 jewtroll, i didn't say it was YOUR preferred way, i said it was an informal way to say it rather than being a bore. the fact is, the australian open imposed severe limits on what kind of court behavior it would tolerate. it was my contention that if mcenroe (a huge draw) is playing at their venue, they shouldn't have been so short-sighted as to have rules like that. sort of like inviting hemingway to a bar and expecting to be regaled without him getting piss-drunk...retard.

  • @gardenvarietypenis it wasn't the rules made by the Australian Open that got him disqualified (more to the point the Australian Open technically doesn't have any) it was the rules made by the ITF (ie. the World Tennis Governing Body) that all sanctioned tournaments have to follow that got him disqualified

  • @irishgodfatherchris oh, thanks, now i can sleep at night.

  • @gardenvarietypenis and with a name like "gardenvarietypenis" you know its a complete dickhead writing total crap because they can

  • @bluerabbit1629 yeah, you just know it...you've got a nose for dickheads. it seems you are unduly knowledgeable and attracted to the penis for one reason or another. i bid you peace or should i say, happenis?

  • The umpire went to far, you could sense in that match that something was taken place against Mac for no reason.

  • wooo woo! i love johnny mc!

  • fucking umpire... in those days without hawkeye, when they make a terrible call they expect the players to just forget about it... well i say FUCK THEM!!!

jonny mac has every right to reason with the shittiest of umpires for a bad call

  • But looks like he has been doing this in every other match...

  • It was the fourth round, there were other matches. You can't bend the rules because the player has a high rank. the Umpire did what he had to do.

  • McEnroe only had himself to blame.

  • Why should the fans get their money back??? All three codeviolations have been absolutely correct, there´s no doubt about it!!! And this was not the last match on that court that particular day.....

  • good on em... perhaps if more tournemants had done this mcenroe might have cooled down and controlled himself. i know people like to see it because its "funny" but its not good sportsmanship. he uses it as a tactic to try and put of the other player.

  • well said mate...everything that was on my mind u've put it down...ppl should be famous for their talent...not for the tantrums they throw

  • Armstrong asked the parents to take the baby out of the stadium, and after the mother and baby left, a fan yelled, ''Can we breathe, John?''

  • ;-)))

  • they were both looking each other and at umpire..

    game set match Penforns..:-)

  • Everyone is wrong except Macenroe... what a jackass...

  • The chair was pissed off when he stood over the lineslady and was looking for a reason to kick him off. Fair enough too.

  • That was the easiest match that Micheal Pernforce ever won.

  • was it the first time he threw his racquet when he got the 2nd warning?

  • Fark off mate. The rules are 3 warnings. He audibly swore at the umpire with the match referee standing right there. He's a fucking idiot and so are you.

  • you do know that the referee was clearly English so don't say shame on aussies when ist wasn't an Australian who disqualified him

  • the umpire was english - but the referee was australian...the umpire was acting under the directorate of the australian open officialdom...(i think they were probably right, actually)...but it was aussie ref who defaulted mac - the english ump was simply obeying orders...

  • so should ur mom ;)

  • the point you're making is that it's in the interest of everyone to keep the players on court and let them play the game, and i agree, but it's in the interest of everyone to keep the sport civilized, if keeping it civilized takes knocking a player out of the tournament for a heavy verbal abuse, so be it - players know the rules and the conseqences

  • true but what happens if one of the most talented players likes to cause an uproar from time to time. its not as if the crowd refused to come and see mcenroe because of his history. not having a go....i jus think mcenroe was class an surely its not hard to just let him rant on an then say....'ready to play now?'

  • This is more entertaining than watching your home team win a championship in any major sport.

  • Mac should have been defaulted dozens of times on the main tour. Even today he continues to make a complete jerk of himself on the senior tour.

That he was a great player and is an interesting color analyst does not mean he is a good sportsman or that he should get away with boorish behavior.

Mac brings shame on the game and on athletes in general.

  • This was good.

  • he's such an ass hole, he deserved it! look at his dick face at the end.

  • The look on McEnroe's face at the end says it all. At last someone had had the courage to stand up to him. Pity it was about ten years too late. It should have happened long ago.

  • @newmark401 wasn't due to courage, it was due to rules for the men's professional game that was instituted before the australian open started

  • @newmark401 Yeah I know. God forbid if tennis actually has itself a player with charisma.

  • @newmark401 You can't be serious? John was the greatest thing to ever happen to tennis!

  • @newmark401 Absolutely. All umpires these days seem somewhat cowardly; for instance, they give Nadal a time warning, but never more than one per match, even though he keeps taking a lot of time.

  • pussy ass aussies!

  • Some new stuff I found online: [ He'd probably have been chucked out anyway for his next offence, an instruction to the tournament supervisor Ken Farrar to, 'Just go fuck your mother.' Within moments, Gerry Armstrong, the British umpire, was announcing: 'Verbal abuse, audible obscenity, Mr McEnroe. Default. Game, set and match, Pernfors.' And McEnroe's response? 'I can't say I'm surprised. It was bound to happen.' ]

  • It's about tennis, not about policing players and power trips. This action undertaken by this umpire clearly falls in this category (power trip): "An action undertaken chiefly for the gratification associated with the exercise of power over another or others"

  • Don't be silly. McEnroe (and others) had been getting away with murder for years. It was high time that something was done about it. There are reasons why you don't see such behaviour anymore during matches. Pity it couldn't have been prevented a few years earlier.

  • Look at the way he eyeballs and intimidates that woman at the start of the video.

It's because of such behaviour that codes of conduct exist so don't talk nonsense and suggest that the umpire is on some power trip when all he is doing is enforcing those codes which both the tennis association AND the players agree to.

  • You have to look at it from a historical as well as psychological perspective. Not from the narrow confines of rules and regulations of which you seem to be a great proponent. McEnroe was a sentimental favorite and the crowd was here to see him. I was watching this match live when it happened and I was upset when it was cut short. McEnore should be allowed to throw his racket like any other player, without suffering a point penalty, and to react to questionable penalties.

  • yes it's all about tennis, and there are rules which are put in place to ensure it stays about the tennis, when you cross the line, you have to be "corrected" to realize just where the line is

  • Yes.. but it's also about the audience and the public. These are not a bunch of amateurs playing in an underground parking lot. We're talking super star of the sports! After the ruling, the public shouted " we want Mcenroe" for 15 minutes. The umpire not only denied Mcenroe a chance to win another slam in his final come back year, he also denied the public what they wanted to see. This incident also leaves a lot of "what if" unanswered in Mcenroe's career and tennis history.

  • i see this all was already discussed a bit lower and the points i was prepared to make have already been made, basically, you cant tell the upmire to "go fuck yourself", it's against the rules, rules are to be followed and it's the player who makes the decision to break them,i see your frustration, but you should not blame the umpire, you should blame mcenroe for pushing it too far-the umpire was acting in the best interest of tennis, abuse like that cannot be tolerated or things get out of hand

  • they ambush his ass that day hahahaha

  • Waah! Waah! I always enjoyed seeing the Crybaby getting his lumps. Amazing how he was mostly popular with non-tennis fans.

  • Right, tennis aficionados like me oftenly prefer Borg, Lendl, Vilas, Wilander and other talented, serious & hard working players, that's what games is about.

  • I never once saw McEnroe going ballistic over a bad call when he was steamrolling someone. He only did it in close matches, where he thought he could distract his opponent. Pure gamesmanship, and that detracts from his legacy as a player. I loved how, once Lendl had him solved, he almost never lost to McEnroe again. Best down-the-line ground strokes ever!

  • i love tennis and real tennis players but i do enjoy McEnroes shenanigans

  • De gustibus non est disputandum.

  • Some people enjoyed his aggression and you're right. they were largely not tennis fans, but simply anyone looking to empathise with McEnroe's violent temper.

Its not surprising that he had many followers among the football fan hooligan fraternity.

They don't remember him for his tennis, they remember him for his mouth.

  • Right you are. Paradoxically, Jimmy Connors had an even worse temper (but lost it much less frequently), but will always be remembered for his great tennis. This was the man who never "coasted" through a game, even if he was up a break. Jimbo never took his foot off the gas. In contrast, McEnroe's whole legacy in pop culture is his outbursts. If you've seen any of his recent TV commercials, Mac has become a caricature of himself. "You cannot be serious!" Sad.

  • Those ass munchers would never have done that to Mac in 1980 or 84... Losers !

  • haha the other guy was like wtf just happened

  • Wow, that umpire wasn't about to take any of McEnroe's shit.

  • Stupid empire! Those guys are not supposed to be ego maniacs as well... they're supposed to do their job, and be as accurate as the eye hawk. Instead, he takes the insult so personally he makes it a personal matter! Not only unprofessional but it should be illegal. Players play for millions and precious ranking points, sponsors and the public pay for their hero, not for some sad empire bastard to deny us some great entertainment just because his ego was hurt...

  • Indeed.

  • Normally, I'd be against a default, but this is John McEnroe. Saying that he had it coming would be a gross understatement.

  • It's "umpire"!! And he shouldn't have to take any crap from a cry baby! He did what many should have done.

  • Well the umpire acted very selfishly. There's a crowd and 100,000s of people watching on TV all around the world.. Actually I was watching it live myself and I remember not believing it.. JMc was playing towards the end of his career and people wanted him to win. He was the sentimental favorite. This idiot umpire denied Mc Enroe and the public one last chance to see him shine in a grand slam. Sure he reached the semis at the US Open and lost to Sampras. But he had his chance at the AO.

  • I disagree.

The umpire didn't act selfishly, he acted according the rules of tennis. Rules which players too are supposed to adhere to and be bound by.

If we are to lay blame on any one person for the umpire's decision, It must be McEnroe himself, for having pushed the boundaries of the rules too far, too often.

This is something which McEnroe is famed for doing far too many times in his career.

  • I disagree.

The umpire didn't act selfishly, he acted according the rules of tennis. Rules which players too are supposed to adhere to and be bound by.

If we are to lay blame on any one person for the umpire's decision or possible disappointment of the crowd, It must be McEnroe himself, for having pushed the boundaries of the rules too far, too often.

This is something which McEnroe is famed for doing far too many times in his career.

  • The umpire is just a jerk, in McEnroe's term, who took it all too personally as opposed to professionally. Did Federer get any warning for smashing his racket recently during his 2nd round loss? No. What's the difference? Federer wasn't questioning the line judge or umpire so they didn't take his frustration as a personal insult. But that's exactly what umpires shouldn't do: To take things personally. They are supposed to behave in a professional manner, not back and forth like a bunch of kids

  • Also if you can read French, you'll realise Mcenroe is quoted as saying: " Va te faire f...." Which stands for "va te faire foutre" = Go fuck yourself. That's the reason why the umpire disqualified him... Don't tell me he was just applying the rules. It is more than likely he didn't like this insult and acted emotionally without any regard for the crowd, the tennis fans, the sponsors, and McEnroe's career... Just his own ego.

  • crazy decision

  • What does "defaulted" mean?

Sorry, not a big tennis fan, but I do love McEnroes outbursts.

  • it means that mcenroe breached the ATP code of conduct, which was 3 code violations. it used to be 4 code violations up until 1989. Therefore 'default' means that he was disqualified as a result of the 3 code violations.

  • he is my idol!!!

  • He is?

That's the best you could find in the idol department?

    I feel sorry for you...

  • The rules obviously didn't allow for him to be disqualified there and then when he hovered above the lines lady at the start of the link. But he should've been there and then.

But the chair was angry at that, coz he was looking for any excuse to dispense with him after that and didn't have to wait long.

Officials and administrators must be respected at all times. Coz without them, u don't make ur pile. U can be a spoilt brat all u like after the game.

  • Pernfors himself looks baffled

  • I love Johnny, but he was acting like a spoiled brat and got what he deserved.

  • Serves him right lol can't keep gettin away with tantrums although that was hilarious when he walked away and was throwin out profanities lmao too funny

  • wow you could tell at the end mcenroe was seething

  • Good! i hate mcenroe! hes sucha ass!!

  • I agree with you 1000000%

  • Darius you are a moron Mac is the best Annoucer NBC has ever had. I bet he earns more money than the winner of the major he is commenting on. Second of all he filled the stands with not only tennis fans but all the pros on the tour. The guy was amazing. Tennis is a sport so what if his temper got away from him a few times. I am sorry you never got to see him. He was brillant not dim like you.

  • Opps... forgot they changed the rules! Warning, point, default. Bye-bye Mac!

  • McEnroe is an ass!but he is very smart and all this shit purposefully to get attention. This shit is on Youtube still!!!!

  • yea, it's been on YouTube for like what, 30 years now?

  • lol

  • Mc Enroe, like some Americans only wants to win at any chance. He aint got any manners at all

  • And you can't speak English.

  • Does it matter making a comment on youtube?

  • I remember this story, and I'm so glad I actually got to see it though.

  • I wish that Hulk Hogan entered the court and body slammed him.

  • Entertainer!

  • How can you not like McEnroe?Guy is genius. For sure my favorite player of all time.

  • agreed. I think people misinterpret McEnroe. You need to have that spark to get you going.

  • Ugh, are you kidding? Absolutely the worst example of a tennis player ever and truly got what he deserved here. NBC, can you please fire him?

  • You are an idiot he was a gem to watch. He was an absolute genius. No one played like him and there will never be another John.

  • First of all, don't call me an idiot. Second of all, I was commenting on his behavior. Suddenly he's poking fun at his own bratty behavior and getting paid for it and gets to critique others on court who behaved the same way. Very hypocritical. He's very lucky our society forgives such things if you are brilliant.

  • I hope all the spectators got re-imbursed.

  • getting trouble for racket abuse seems kinda dumb.

  • This arsehole of a tennis player got what he deserved here. Good decision by the umpire.

  • i'd take ten McEnroes over 1 dusty fucking englishman.

at least he showed a pulse.

  • McEnroe was and still is a complete brat

  • He was the biggest spectacle on a tennis court. Amazing talen and terrible behavour, but... it was always fun watching him playing

  • I agree. but I just like watching him get angry and break stuff. lol

  • TERRIBLE BEHAVIOR??? r u kidding me,he was the ONLY man with balls on that court, that had the guts to yell and say and express his freedom of speech and make his point.People paid money to see him,he was already a millionaer. He could do whatever,he did not care

  • he wasn't the only one...boris, pete, and agassi have had their blow ups too.

  • not pete.Pete was always respectful and quiet.

  • glad noone cares about what you think.

  • He was a great talent that was beautiful to watch. He played like Laver, he was a genius he did things with a racquet tour playrs only dream about. I was fortunate to wacth him play.

  • greatest genious ever, his genious and talent are unparalled in tennis history.

  • umm...you do realize that he's retired now, don't you?

  • Should have happened long before. McEnroe got away with murder in the 80s.

  • finally a right decission, what an asshole!!

  • AHlàlàlà!!! Mcenroe aurait pu gagner l'open d'australie en 90 mais il en faisait parfois vraiment trop et c'est bien de le voir remis en place.
