I search around on youtube, watching some videos. Then I arrive at this awesome cover of an even more awesome song. Then I want to write a comment about how amazing the cover is. Then I see this messed up argument between The National fans and Mumford and Sons fans. Oh please would you shut your gaps? Both bands are amazing. I thought this cover was brilliant, and personally I like the original more, so what? Surely the National feels honored about this cover!
I dont want to anger any of you "The National" fans but, i think "Mumford & Sons" lead singer has the perfect voice for that beautiful melodic peace of art. It brings that extra something that the song needs, so sue me.
Well, maybe not the same as the original, but kinda what's expected from Mumford & Sons, they put pace into everything, sometimes it works amazingly, like in Laura Marling's second album, 'I speak because I can', and sometimes it just doesn't sit too well. I guess this is probably the latter, but still, not too bad. Cheers for uploading!
As someone who views Mumford and Sons and the National as two of my all time favorite music groups... I love both versions. I think Mumford and Sons bring some of the passion and desperation to entertain while the National brings the beautiful orchestration and the melancholy in Beringer's voice. So yeah. Love them both.
@checkcheckluke I realise that. Finding this song led me to the national and other songs they've performed. I'm not saying they're anything alike -___-
This indeed does not work for his voice as well as with the vocalist from The National, but it's still a good cover. I love both Mumford and The National.
i think this band is amazing but they played it too fast and the emotion doesnt suit the lyrics. i did like the way they played "afraid of the house they stay the night with the sinners" but overall, the original version is, without doubt, better.
I hadn't heard of The National until I saw Mumford and Sons Unplugged. The original version is good, but I think Marcus's vocals capture the emotion behind the lyrics much better.
I love both versions! The original is on such an epic scale, whereas this one, despite retaining the athem-like vibe, is somehow much more intimate. They're both beautiful. :)
I love the cover and the original.. can't pick which one i prefer because they are both great in different ways. Well done Mumford & Sons again on another great cover! :)
very good. nothing like the original. i actually heard this before i heard the originial, but man The National is so fuckin good. the original destorys this.
I'm dead even with both versions. Marcus' passion and the true entertaining at the 'desperate to entertain' portion was brilliant, and the empty, flat vocals so brilliant from Matt Berninger for the National is moving. I simply love both versions, and I thank Mumford and Sons for introducing me to the fourth consecutive National song that I'm addicted hopelessly.
I actually don't like the added emotion. I always felt like this song was suppose to be empty - empty promises and empty happiness. That's why the original dry baritone was so perfect for the lyrics.
Either way, it's still a very nice cover. Always glad to see bands giving tribute to the National.
@JirachiJenny I agree. I'm always keen to hear other band's takes on songs that aren't theirs, but for me the vocals on this one really don't work/fit. Definitely good to have the chance to hear it like this though, as it makes it easier to appreciate the original version more off the back of it.
Really, the only reason I like this more than The National's version is simply because Marcus puts so much more power in it with his vocals. Not necessarily better, just different. A different that I like more. Others would prefer The National's version, with the "Calmer" voice. Either way, damn good song.
no mumford and sons dont cut with this version of "england" sound like hes on 78 speed for anyone who can remember!! leave it to the national, talk about murdering a tune,
It's a very different version form the original by the National but I like it, too. M&S give their own special touch to the songs they cover.I love them!! Great, thanks for the upload!!

I think that original version is cooler, by 2 things: The grave voice of the leader, and the slow tempo.

As much as I try to not like Mumford & Sons, Marcus Mumford's quavering voice just Wins me over.
(That was a pun, for those who know their quavering vocalists ;D)
