Classic Very Classic, it is so sad that we do not have music like this today!!! I played this for my students one day in class and they looked like what is this. It is sad that all our children have to listen to is the garbage today that is called music, which isn't really music!!!
if you knew Noel, you may know me, either way, concern for each other is the very basis of life. Kindness and love, a real sense of brotherhood and sisterhood, are very precious. My dear friend NOEL POINTER has passed what seems to be just yesterday, never lose HEART! for those who lost a love one, my heart goes out to you. RT III
I was first introduced to Mr.Pointer via WRVR, back in the day, and I first saw him play at a club in East Orange,NJ. My friends didn't know who he was but I know because I had been exposed to this Awesome Artist and Master.
i was just blessed with this selection today leaving work.. I listened for the name and remembered to Youtube it as soon as I got home. I will admit, it's a bit of similarities with Quincy's, but that's expected.. It's just a 70's feel in both. I LOVE it.. Will be on the look out for this LP..
I had this LP back in the day. I found it again on itunes and bought it again. It took me back. I just listened to Stevie Wonder's original score of "Superwoman", then this one. I can go to sleep now.
Thanks for this post...thiswas one of the first jazz albums I bought and I played this song to death!! What that man could do with a fiddle ;~DD RIP Noel Pointer!!
Yeah, Noel Pointer and the blue violin. RIP Some much talent has left us. But they are here on YouTube and we can come together in appreciation the music. Thanks YouTube!!
i heard this a lot, back in the 1980's here in manila. 101.1 fm the Jazz FM. it was called pogi jazz then or smooth jazz as it is now known. i know the keyboard solo note for note!
I am glad he was the first interntional artist i saw in a live concert. I was still in grade school when i saw him perform here in Cebu City, Philippines...( I think it was a Yamaha-CocalCola sponsored gig ). He bring with him an international cast of musicans from NY, Australia, etc including the Philippines' best percussionist, Mr. Dindong Boogie..from that night on, his music had really left an unforgetabble imprint in my life...i never love jazz this way.....God bless you Mr. Pointer....
I bought this album, one because I liked superwoman, stevie wonders version , two because his mother was my music teacher in P.S. 21 180 Chauncey St. Bk, NY. We had what you called back then, (the 60's) a Glee Club. She Played piano and we put on many programs. I believe he was her only child. I have fond memories of those days, of his mom and his music. may they both rest in peace.
My family was great friends with the Pointer's. his wife was my mom's best friend in highschool. he was a great guy and it was very sad when he died, i am only 22, but i luckily got to see him do a concert in a park somewhere when i was very young. it was great. i never knew a violin could sound so funky.
pepperpod1,you're right he died from a stroke, I had the privilege of promoting him in Puerto Rico twice, he' s shure missed around the world, now he's making music in heaven, great person, just wondering are you related to him.
Yes, he was a mere teenager when he recorded this tune. Unlike so many young artist today, he was a student of music. Died far too young. RIP Noel, we love your music......
My God! This is my first time hearing of his death I was a big fan (still am) I had this album and loved it - It kind of sounds a little like the Quincy Jones version. Back in the day I use to listen to him and John Loc Ponty, Noels sound was more soulful. RIP - your sound is forever in our heads.
I love this version of Stevie's song (which is one of my all time favs). Brings back a lot of sweet memories. I can't believe it's been almost 30 years since I first heard this version. Noel was godsend. Rest in Peace my brother.
Does anyone know what the effect on the bass in the beginning is called??? is it a phaser or a flanger. I really wanna get that 70's out-of-phase sound for my bass.
That is the Awesome Anthony Jackson on Bass Guitar and he is using a "homemade flanger" on this song. I have found that the Boss GT-6B Effects Pedal and a Jazz Bass gets pretty darn close.
Subscribed to Downbeat Mag. in the '70s. One year I lived in an area where I had no friends into jazz and no jazz radio station. I'd use my Downbeat to pick out and buy my jazz LPs. When I finally got back to civilization, I saw this LP in the record store and bought it, just based on the cover photo of Noel. I'd hadn't even heard of him yet. I was blown away by his music and the previous poster was right, he was 17 when this LP was released. One of my all time favorites. Please post more! RIP
Probably blasphemous of me to say this, but I actually prefer this to Stevie's original. Dave Grusin's beautiful string arrangements and Steve Gadd/Francesco Centeno's drum 'n bass samba funk lick take this song out into the stratosphere, just the right setting for violin virtuoso Noel to do showcase his genius. Noel's wonderful violin playing and music during his sadly all-too brief life continues to serve as an inspiration for those fans of quality, timeless music. RIP my brother!
@Tchalla77 Wouldn't call you blasphemous for that lol. I mean hey, how many people prefer Isley Brothers covers to the originals? [raises hands]
And yeah, the Steve Gadd/Francisco Centeno team made a lot of GRP records feel so great, along with Ralph McDonald's percussion which gives it so much character. But judging by the sound, I think Anthony Jackson is playing bass on this cut, not Francisco Centeno.
