crazy , i can see 2 a pound being a profit for a single person, but for you guys its a slap in the face , i see the frustration for sure, haha you should have sold the squished ones for fertilizer lol probably make more money
I first started picking back when prices were high. Crazy fun starting out in highschool and making some good cash for playin in the woods. I still pick today but stopped selling them years ago when the prices went to hell.
"immigrants" picking and selling still today for less then chantrelles, and the quality of of matzis from some usa exporters screwed us big time. They get better from Argentina and Korea now. Never be the same regardless of what we do.
Why don't the pickers and small buyers get together and form a co-op? Have a board of directors (either volunteer or modestly paid). Formulate prices etc. so that the pickers get paid properly and you don't have some guy at the top getting fabulously rich on the backs of other people. The co-op could control everything from the picker to actual delivery in Japan.
being a yearly picker from rupert, I feel the pain.
This bs is getting worse and worse every year. I LOVE PICKING... and I HATE giving giving my cash to slime balls like Joe chung... 2 years ago we stomped our mushrooms at the ZOO (nass area) and my god did that ever feel good.
This should be an annual event as soon as we pick for under 5$ a pound
STOMP IT ALL
or donate to your local resturaunts * sushi gigs will love you *
ive sold to you,im a vetran picker, since 89,Good on ya bro !!!! i think Tony Hitoe in Vancouver has gotta go !!!!! Pickers and buyers rights need to be adressed with the Japanese, weve bin gettin screwed every year for many years now !!! We need a new man in Van !!!!!
@WillyTung Mushrooms are being destroyed in protest to the low prices that pines are currently worth. As heard in the video, they used to be worth $50 a pound (a long time ago they were worth even more) and now they are only $2 a pound.
This was in 07', I haven't been keeping up with the prices but I assume they are still low now in 2010.
this is a shame . we live a grt live here all our best stuff goes to japan.(produce fish ect.) and like so much the person whom does the least gets to rip us off. its true in any industry. ..i notice two things one there is not one japanese person put up a comment and the world is almost collapse finacially.were next if harper carries on. wasting our $.like these mushrooms.
I'm just wondering what you do now. It's seems like this business is/was a huge part of your life. Are you to the point that you don't turn a profit at all? If so, I assume you're out of the business. What will it take to bring the prices back up? And, do you think it will ever happen? Best of Luck, bro. I totally see that it's heartbreaking to you.
It used to be extra income for me. I have not picked for a long time. The price will never be fair again until the pickers get together and strike. I don't see that ever becoming a reality. Too many people out there are desperate or will pick them just for fun. These people have killed the industry for supporting the monopoly.
This breaks my heart to see this i dont live in Terrace anymore but i was born there me and my uncle parrish used to pick and sell to TC's shroom shack all the time i just can't believe the prices have dropped so much
Why cant you just sell those mushrooms online and cut out the middlemen? or sell them at local farmers markets around the country? to go from 2000/lb to .30/lb if it were me I would fly directly and do all the work myself.... for 2000 a lb I could afford it.
Mushroom picking is not an easy activity. $.30 / lbs? That is ridiculous. Probably more and more middlemen coming on board, cutting more out of the pie for themselves. Giving in to their price would have been the wrong thing to do, as hard as that must have been to destroy all of those! Hopefully things return to what they should!
really......ok then where can i bought matsutake spora........i have a friend who is a botanist, who knows i can do it......with 2000 u.s $/kilos it is more interesting than growing ganja.....
i've been looking on google and wikipedia and the answer is the same....but 120 years ago that's what they say about flying and going to the moon...thnx very much for your info, but i 'll keep trying to grow matsutake on green house and about 60-160 year old pine trees root, we've got plenty in here....well wish me luck on my lil project....
I know you may be upset but at a $1000 a box is a bit exuberant markets are markets and the way I see it is that maybe due to the vast amount of pickers fighting for a buck who are just out for a buck. we are getting a lot more for them locally here in oregon and half the time are not even making it to the brokers or to the airport for that matter. a $2 a pound I rather give them to frineds and eat them myself which we will do today after we pick good luck
For All of YOU,...The People of Our Country CANADA...I Tory Charlton (T.C.)....It really is Most DEFINATE Aswell as Dissapointing That we give away yet another one of OUR RESOURCES....Can We atleast wake up and take note,...cause Money is'nt everything at all times,... yet survival is...BUT We ALL have to admit we're Blessed Here in Canada,... GREEDINESS IS OUR OWN WORST ENENMY,... Think about it!!!!
Yeah I hear ya Tory, I agree. I am from Terrace myself. In fact my brother and his girl have a mushroom depot there to. You know who he is. Say Hi to my bro Franny for me.. From Kevin haha Peace Tory, good vid.
you make some valid points, but you ruin it with your stance.. So much waste.. should've eaten them or conserved them for later use instead of selling. Respect.
Realistically, the "cartel" is likely just laughing at you because of this.
Tory,a little comment from your home town, nice to see you stand up for all the pine mushroom pickers...i wish the other buyers had a backbone like you.I watched your videos(1-4)today with my dad and we were impressed,i`ll have to get uncle Jerry over here later....right on Tory, take it easy...Donny.
Why not try to sell them locally. I know you are trying to make a point, but the Japanese are not the only ones who like to eat mushrooms. That was a disgrace!
There are only 4-5 places that would buy. Your right to say there is now a market other than Japan. Demand is even higher now. We are not in that market as we should be. If standing up for what is right is a disgrace, then that is your right also.
If your clothes and your shoes say made in China that's because it's cheaper labor elsewhere. You take advantage of that by choosing to buy it. Now these same buyers of these mushrooms do the same thing suddenly you're upset. How many businesses went under when Walmart came to town? And the common attitude people had was, Good, we're tired of being ripped off!
Thats probably what some of those people in Japan are saying, "Good, we're tired of being ripped off!"
Way to go T.C.. I've been picking here in Terrace for a few years now, and this IS the worst I've ever seen for pricing. Why is it that the Japanese are paying like 200-300 dollars for a ½lb. pine, and we're getting paid 2 bucks a lb.? Just does'nt add up. Again, way to go T.C.! Somebody has got to see this and take notice.
thats a lot of shrooms man good message hope it start to click in .they realy like Matsutake (pine) mushrooms so they will pay if pickers and buyers stick together on this .all the best to all BC shroom shack pickers and surrounding areas .we all could be succesfull with mushrooms (pine).cheers RAYSOR lmfao
I used to pick back when the price was around 50 dollar US on the olympic peninsula. You literally can make more picking up empties now. I still pick just for myself and matsis are a taste treat on the BBQ but I want no part of what has become of the mushroom scene.
