420 hp, 4.8 second 0-60? Something simply isn't adding up. My Z (stock rated to 287hp) does a 5.5 0-60. I just fail to see how over 120hp extra gives it less than a second faster off the line. Granted at speed the thing is a bast. Just my $.02.
I used to work for Marcos, it was a shit car and they were selling the cars for £50000 but making them for £100000ish and parts hardly fitted correctly.
@jo300hn no, graphics designers building cars was main culprit, Until myself and another mechanic came along they didnt start to improve things, but then it was already too late
@Drewshep84 There is nothing appalling about holding the UK to its share of the responsibility for the disastrous world wars. Naval agreements with Germany, ignoring German military buildup, Rhineland, Austria, Sudetenland. Had the UK showed a spine at all prior to September '39, maybe tens of millions wouldn't have died, more lives ruined, and Europe wrecked. Instead you sat on your hands and declared 'peace for our times'. Safe keeping huh? Try reading the first book of The Second World War.
I absolutely love this car! Have do since I first saw it in this review all those years ago. Its such a shame theyre so rare! I hope I manage to own one one day, really do.
Hammond's understanding of "The way the world should be" is preposterous, unless you think the British did a good job handling their own muscle in the first half of the 20th Century. As I recall, it was the British that oversaw Europe lead the world into the most destructive period of human existance. Its American muscle that keeps the Europeans in check, and led to the most prosperous time of all humanity. Remove our muscle, and they will be at each other's throats in no time.
Everyone saying that it looks like a TVR has a point - it does. But then, a lot of British sports cars, and sports cars in general, of the '60s - from which TVR et al. take their lead, and not without reason - did look rather similar back then. Tastes changed, and that style almost died out (with the exception of that frog-eyed stagnant bloody hedgie conveyance the 911), but now it's back. And not from Porsche or the FSB. Which really is something to shout about.
I don't think the company exsits anymore, such a shame, it looked a nice car too.
I think a company called Prodrive bought the specs off Marcos before they went under, they should continue with the manufacture of them, along with their prototype P2 car

Nah, the world should be British muscle and British chassis engineers... great though the Chevy engine is, we've produced some stonkers too. The Jag and Rover V8s (even though that was a Buick engine originally), TVR and Jag straight-sixes, the Aston Martin straight-sixes and V8s...

@thing503 - no such thing as British muscle? So how do you explain the Jaguar and Aston Martin straight-sixes? Aston Martin's heroic 5.3 litre V8? Jaguar's V12? The much-maligned but nowadays rather lovely Triumph V8? The straight-six in the Austin-Healey 3000? The fabulous modern Jaguar V8? Remember, also, it was British Cosworth engines powering Lotus when they were dominating in IndyCars as well as F2 and F1...
@EccentricRichard I understand where you're coming from but Britain doesn't produce "Muscle cars" They may produce V8 motors but America is famous for producing the low revving torque monsters that everyone recognizes as American muscle. Britain doesn't produce muscle cars. They produce GT cars.
@thing503 - true enough. Mind you, Aston Martin produced some proper muscle cars - you might not count the old David Browns (especially the DB4/5/6) or the old DBS, but when the DBS was reworked as the Mustang-lookalike V8 Vantage, that was a proper muscle car. Very little in the way of handling sophistication, just a V8 torque monster (even though the V8 is OHC). The later Virage and its spinoffs were similarly brutish.
@thing503 - It was only when that V8 died a death and Ford began making Astons more Jag-like that handling sophistication came in, with the XJS-derived DB7, then the Vanquish (named thus by the workers who didn't appreciate Ford's then recent appointment of a German as Aston's CEO, because the Germans pronounce Vs as Ws and vice versa), then the VH-architecture cars that have followed (the DB9, the new DBS, the new V8 Vantage - which uses a modified Jag V8 - the V12 Vantage, the Rapide, etc).
@thing503 - Also, there was the Jensen Interceptor, which used a huge Chrysler V8. Proper luxury muscle car - great GT, but also very quick. That's before we even get onto the rather more spartan AC Cobra... but then that too had a big American (Ford) engine.
Anyway, my original point was, Hammond was only talking about engines, rather than entire cars, which is why I admitted merely very powerful British cars into the discussion...
@EccentricRichard The AC Cobra however isn't even a muscle car. And while the body was originally manufactured in Britain you can't truly call it a British car. Every version was fitted with a Ford motor, and Ford drivetrain. It is a Ford with a facelift. Eventually the bodies were produced in America anyway. Shelby just needed some help because he didn't have the money to do it all himself in the beginning.
@thing503 - just because a car has a drivetrain from a given company doesn't make it one of that company's products. Is a Morgan Aeromax a BMWwith a facelift? Is a Gordon-Keeble just a Corvette in drag? Is a Jensen Interceptor just a Dodge Challenger in a Savile Row suit? Are the various V8 Rovers just Buicks? No.
@thing503 - The AC Cobra merely fitted a Ford drivetrain into the otherwise 100% British AC Ace. Shelby had nothing to do with the design of the steering, suspension or chassis. It's a British car. It is also quite muscly - not the most sophisticated-handling thing, quite heavy in its controls. It is, however, light...
@EccentricRichard But around the world, it is recognized as an American car, since Shelby produced their own years after the Golden age of the 60's. I guess it' just point of view.
@EccentricRichard Lol, you don't have to get all defensive. I mean you even kinda proved my point when you made that comment about other cars. The body MAY have been manufactured in Britain but it is an American company, therefore, by your own words, the car is American.
@thing503 - since when was AC American? It was founded in 1901 by two brothers called Weller (they were British), and based in West Norwood, near Croydon. In 1911, it moved to Thames Ditton, near from Hampton Court Palace, and remained there until 1984. It was a British company. The Cobra chassis was British-engineered throughout. Shelby just licensed the Cobra's design so he could build it under his own name in the US. God, next you'll be saying the Americans won the Battle of Britain...
@EccentricRichard Lol, but the point still stands that you even proved is that they are called SHELBY Cobras. SSSSSHHHHHHEEEEELLLLLLBBBBYYYYY. That is an American company therefore the car is American. I really don't understand why you are getting so irritated over this lol. You kinda proved yourself wrong when you stated that it doesn't matter what company builds the parts, it's which company slaps their name on it.
@thing503 - they're not called SHELBY, they're AC Cobras! All Shelby does is build replicas, and they're not even the best replicas around. It's a British car. You can't even call a car designed in one country and built in another a car from the latter country - that would make rather a lot of Toyotas American or British (and quite a lot of Nissans and Hondas would be British too).
@EccentricRichard And somehow that's why they were EXCLUSIVELY sold to Americans. Shelby did not produce replicas. Replicas are produced by aftermarket companies like Factory Five. I mean, seriously. You are extremely arrogant and think your country invented everything. Get over yourself.
@thing503 - Cobras sold exclusively to Americans? So that's why they were designed, built and sold here in the UK? I'm not arrogant, nor do I think Britain invented everything, but I'm sick of you Yanks claiming the credit for stuff Britain has done. Shelby's Cobra was just a replica produced after AC were done with the Cobra chassis.
@EccentricRichard Dude thats done all the time You cant say since some part is from a diffrent country so its there's. Look at ther mercedes mclaren slr Engine is from mclaren which is british but Everything else is from a german car.
@parth17870 - other way round. The engine (block at least) came from Mercedes, as did the transmission, but the carbonfibre monocoque, the suspension, steering and interior and whatnot are all McLaren's doing (although you'll be able to spot some Mercedes bits in the cabin). Oh, and is a company's nationality defined by its geographical location or its ownership? Because the controlling shares in McLaren are owned by a bunch of Arabs... =)
@RnB123100 - keep American V8s for British and American cars. The Germans and the Japanese have made some great V8s, and it pisses me off seeing a Porsche 928 with a Chevy small-block, or a Mazda RX-7 with the same. A 928 should have a Porsche quad-cam V8, an RX-7 should have a turbocharged Mazda rotary (and anything with a Japanese inline four or V6 of the usual manically-revving character should retain that sort of engine too). Big Toyotas and Lexuses should have Lexus straight-sixes or V8s.
@EccentricRichard u shure?coz if i where u id stop being so closed minded.an ls1 engine in a japenesse car (4 example nissan 240sx) is the best mix ive ever seen.u have the power of an american v8 (americans suck at 4s and 6s but make the best 8s) and an engine that can take loadsz of boost in a li9ghtwieght great handling japanesse sports car
@RnB123100 - I know the LS1 is a great engine (I'd love to have one or an LS3 in a TVR, a Marcos, a Rover P6 or SD1, a Morgan, etc), extremely tunable, but somehow its character doesn't quite fit Japanese cars. I'd rather do as the Japanese drifting champions do with their 240SXs and RX7s and so on - turbo them to hell!
Oh, and while I know that the Americans make some great V8s, look at BMW, Audi, Mercedes, AMG, Lexus, Ferrari, Maserati, Jaguar Land Rover (Jag and LR are the same company)...
@EccentricRichard well, all that's true but the prob is 240sx engines (especially the twin cam) cant take that mach boost ther4 only produce round 600hp.but its true how must European v8s (the m division from bmw has a great v8, specially when tuned)but the prob is European cars r 2 technical,u dnt get that sports car feeling when driving, plus its really hard to wrk on those cars.
@RnB123100 - you reckon 600hp in a 240SX ain't enough? Seriously? As for European V8s, they're seriously not that hard to work on, they're keener to rev than an American pushrod lump (thereby enhancing the sporty feel). Try taking an LS1 to 8000rpm... it really annoys me when someone replaces a revvy European V8 or inline six or V12 with an LS. Look at this: watch?v=qju9iEFqp3Y.. 540bhp from a 3.2 litre six, and no turbos (only a centrifugal supercharger), and it sounds like an old F1 car too =)
@EccentricRichard 600hp in a 240sx is not enough.and its dum to replace a 12 with an ls engine, but its smart to replace a erup v8 with an ls,u know why?couse a erup v8 can only go to round 1,000hp.the ls can get to 1,500 if not more.and erup engines arent hard to wrk on,the erup cars are, becouse they have 2 much electricall crap.they make great cars, but are best left stock.
@RnB123100 - I'm sorry, but 600hp in ANYTHING is an awful lot of power. Add in to that the 240SX's light weight and good aerodynamics and you've got a seriously fast car, and one where you're pushing the boundaries of what the chassis can cope with. It's not smart to replace a European (get it right) V8 with an LS, precisely because they're more sophisticated. 1000hp from anything is a vast amount of power - you'll hardly be able to use it on a racetrack, let alone on roads. No-one needs 1500hp.
@EccentricRichard i have yet to see a 600hp 240 beat a 1,500hp 240.and im talking but drag cars,not rode cars.and btw,look up 400mph big rig.those have over 3,000hp,some even 5 0r 6 thousand.
@RnB123100 not at all lol, dude i think you are getting the the ls confused with the ls5 the ls1 is a 10 year old motor the intake, manifold, pistons etc
@RnB123100 - Americans are beginning to make phenomenal 6 cylinders, but they're wrapped in cars undeserving of the engine. Look at the Ford Taurus SHO. The car doesn't deserve that motor. The Ecoboost F150 is also an example of a GREAT V-6 but I'd love them to put this motor into top of the line Rangers. As for 4 cylinders, America makes mediocre 4s with very rare flashes of brilliance. The Ford Focus ST and Chevy Cobalt SS are examples.
@Slipknotyk06 The ford and and the chevy cobalt engines are not american. Fords 2.5 lt. engine is from volvo (T5) and the engine in the cobalt is from opel and saab.
@enteng2366 well the gt-r is a silly and fat and ugly supercar that it is unbilievably fast. it did a lap in the ring at 7 min 38 s . however the tso gtc
(2007 version ) with sabine schitz at the wheel did it at 7 min 36 s too bad no one knew this and this time was published only at evo magazine de on july of 2007
@i5Alex this car hanles perfectly as i read in all the reviews(check the evo review) and it is very well made . my dad owns a porshe and he is a member of the gt club there he met wwith 2 marcos owners . both of them said that their cars had no problems ( not a single service for over 2 years ) unfortunately the company gone busted .

Shelby just needed some help because he didn't have the money to do it all himself in the beginning.
thing503 1 year ago
@thing503 - just because a car has a drivetrain from a given company doesn't make it one of that company's products. Is a Morgan Aeromax a BMWwith a facelift? Is a Gordon-Keeble just a Corvette in drag? Is a Jensen Interceptor just a Dodge Challenger in a Savile Row suit? Are the various V8 Rovers just Buicks? No.
EccentricRichard 1 year ago
@thing503 - The AC Cobra merely fitted a Ford drivetrain into the otherwise 100% British AC Ace. Shelby had nothing to do with the design of the steering, suspension or chassis. It's a British car. It is also quite muscly - not the most sophisticated-handling thing, quite heavy in its controls. It is, however, light...
EccentricRichard 1 year ago
@EccentricRichard But around the world, it is recognized as an American car, since Shelby produced their own years after the Golden age of the 60's. I guess it' just point of view.
thing503 1 year ago
@thing503 - nonsense! It is NOT an American car, any idiot knows that... it's a British car through and through.
EccentricRichard 1 year ago
@EccentricRichard Lol, you don't have to get all defensive. I mean you even kinda proved my point when you made that comment about other cars. The body MAY have been manufactured in Britain but it is an American company, therefore, by your own words, the car is American.
thing503 1 year ago
@thing503 - since when was AC American? It was founded in 1901 by two brothers called Weller (they were British), and based in West Norwood, near Croydon. In 1911, it moved to Thames Ditton, near from Hampton Court Palace, and remained there until 1984. It was a British company. The Cobra chassis was British-engineered throughout. Shelby just licensed the Cobra's design so he could build it under his own name in the US. God, next you'll be saying the Americans won the Battle of Britain...
EccentricRichard 1 year ago
@EccentricRichard Lol, but the point still stands that you even proved is that they are called SHELBY Cobras. SSSSSHHHHHHEEEEELLLLLLBBBBYYYYY. That is an American company therefore the car is American. I really don't understand why you are getting so irritated over this lol. You kinda proved yourself wrong when you stated that it doesn't matter what company builds the parts, it's which company slaps their name on it.
thing503 1 year ago
@thing503 - they're not called SHELBY, they're AC Cobras! All Shelby does is build replicas, and they're not even the best replicas around. It's a British car. You can't even call a car designed in one country and built in another a car from the latter country - that would make rather a lot of Toyotas American or British (and quite a lot of Nissans and Hondas would be British too).
EccentricRichard 1 year ago
@EccentricRichard And somehow that's why they were EXCLUSIVELY sold to Americans. Shelby did not produce replicas. Replicas are produced by aftermarket companies like Factory Five. I mean, seriously. You are extremely arrogant and think your country invented everything. Get over yourself.
thing503 1 year ago
@thing503 - Cobras sold exclusively to Americans? So that's why they were designed, built and sold here in the UK? I'm not arrogant, nor do I think Britain invented everything, but I'm sick of you Yanks claiming the credit for stuff Britain has done. Shelby's Cobra was just a replica produced after AC were done with the Cobra chassis.
EccentricRichard 1 year ago
@EccentricRichard Dude thats done all the time You cant say since some part is from a diffrent country so its there's. Look at ther mercedes mclaren slr Engine is from mclaren which is british but Everything else is from a german car.
parth17870 1 year ago
@parth17870 - other way round. The engine (block at least) came from Mercedes, as did the transmission, but the carbonfibre monocoque, the suspension, steering and interior and whatnot are all McLaren's doing (although you'll be able to spot some Mercedes bits in the cabin). Oh, and is a company's nationality defined by its geographical location or its ownership? Because the controlling shares in McLaren are owned by a bunch of Arabs... =)
EccentricRichard 1 year ago
@EccentricRichard Lol Not to be racist but true
parth17870 1 year ago
@EccentricRichard the body is, everything else is American iron
tankimus 1 year ago
@tankimus - no, the body, chassis, suspension, steering and interior are all British. The Americans provided only the powertrain.
EccentricRichard 1 year ago
@EccentricRichard yea,but if u plan on customizing and engine there's nothin better than a ls1 (corvette engine) in a japenese car
RnB123100 1 year ago
@RnB123100 - keep American V8s for British and American cars. The Germans and the Japanese have made some great V8s, and it pisses me off seeing a Porsche 928 with a Chevy small-block, or a Mazda RX-7 with the same. A 928 should have a Porsche quad-cam V8, an RX-7 should have a turbocharged Mazda rotary (and anything with a Japanese inline four or V6 of the usual manically-revving character should retain that sort of engine too). Big Toyotas and Lexuses should have Lexus straight-sixes or V8s.
EccentricRichard 1 year ago
@EccentricRichard u shure?coz if i where u id stop being so closed minded.an ls1 engine in a japenesse car (4 example nissan 240sx) is the best mix ive ever seen.u have the power of an american v8 (americans suck at 4s and 6s but make the best 8s) and an engine that can take loadsz of boost in a li9ghtwieght great handling japanesse sports car
RnB123100 1 year ago 13
EccentricRichard 1 year ago
@EccentricRichard well, all that's true but the prob is 240sx engines (especially the twin cam) cant take that mach boost ther4 only produce round 600hp.but its true how must European v8s (the m division from bmw has a great v8, specially when tuned)but the prob is European cars r 2 technical,u dnt get that sports car feeling when driving, plus its really hard to wrk on those cars.
RnB123100 1 year ago
@RnB123100 - you reckon 600hp in a 240SX ain't enough? Seriously? As for European V8s, they're seriously not that hard to work on, they're keener to rev than an American pushrod lump (thereby enhancing the sporty feel). Try taking an LS1 to 8000rpm... it really annoys me when someone replaces a revvy European V8 or inline six or V12 with an LS. Look at this: watch?v=qju9iEFqp3Y.. 540bhp from a 3.2 litre six, and no turbos (only a centrifugal supercharger), and it sounds like an old F1 car too =)
EccentricRichard 1 year ago
@EccentricRichard 600hp in a 240sx is not enough.and its dum to replace a 12 with an ls engine, but its smart to replace a erup v8 with an ls,u know why?couse a erup v8 can only go to round 1,000hp.the ls can get to 1,500 if not more.and erup engines arent hard to wrk on,the erup cars are, becouse they have 2 much electricall crap.they make great cars, but are best left stock.
RnB123100 1 year ago
@RnB123100 - I'm sorry, but 600hp in ANYTHING is an awful lot of power. Add in to that the 240SX's light weight and good aerodynamics and you've got a seriously fast car, and one where you're pushing the boundaries of what the chassis can cope with. It's not smart to replace a European (get it right) V8 with an LS, precisely because they're more sophisticated. 1000hp from anything is a vast amount of power - you'll hardly be able to use it on a racetrack, let alone on roads. No-one needs 1500hp.
EccentricRichard 1 year ago
@EccentricRichard i have yet to see a 600hp 240 beat a 1,500hp 240.and im talking but drag cars,not rode cars.and btw,look up 400mph big rig.those have over 3,000hp,some even 5 0r 6 thousand.
