hey Fgks, this is a great song, but what the FUCK is wrong with this version? its extremely louder on the left side and can barely be heard on the right fucking ruining the song. You're a fuckup for ruining such a great song.
I remember when I first heard Genetic Engineer. There was a TV show in Calgary Alberta called 'FM Moving Pictures' (IIRC) that was a local cable show that highlighted up and coming music. I heard Genetic Engineer on TV, and then sat in front of the TV on the repeat broadcast with a tape recorder and recorded the audio off of my TV because I didn't have the $ to buy the album at that moment (or maybe it wasn't out yet?).
Genetic Engineer & Telegram are two of my all time fave songs, ever.
I understand the ripping of the book into two whole books as a reference to mitosis where the cell divides itself into two new daughter cells.. after division, the cell begins its process of division right from the beginning again, which is represented by the two men starting to type again. The video ends where it begins, just like cell cycle.. I like it!
I remember when my uncle played this song to me in kindergarten. I was only 6 yrs old and I remember the Red colored tape cassette. I stole it from him and wore the tape out, it broke later into my 7's. I always remembered loving this album the most and later found it on CD just by a strange chance. Today it sounds just as fresh and original as it did when I heard it in 84.
'The Dazzle ships' was a really amazing album. The album was an attempt at art rather than a get rich scheme. I wish more musicians took that approach.
capturing the future, yes capturing a little of the environment of future times before it happens, with clarity.. and then sharing that expression of talent. i'm grateful
Brilliant song and a FANTASTIC album. Dazzle Ships is groundbreaking, From Radio Prague to Of all the things we've made it is a classic. OMD still rule.......
even with Kraftwerk and other synth bands there was never Andy's beauty and voice and the whole concept for Dazzleeships and it was such a complete albumthis and telegraph still my fave songs from da 80's.If I hadn't lived in Los Ang I woulda missed all this great stuff.American Radio is stillfoo up.This is original, fun, poppy and so innovative. This sound was nowhere else!
i think it was a bigger hit here no20 i believe from the now cult omd album dazzleships and it was on their greatest hits album the first and best one in 1988 althouth it might have been the 12 inch version still think the best option for the first single was radio waves but it never made it even as the 3rd single or any single
Was this a bigger hit in England than in America? I never heard this song and it not included in their greatest hits packages es it? I say because dang 100,000 views! Dont get me wrong, its agreat song
@Lookfishlamp I had the same thing happen to me,..Only dif was that my friends dad had it on cassette and he quietly took it to his room. We listened to it over and over again. Up to then we had and I hadn't heard music like this. I know that they say and it's true to SOME extent that it almost damned them, but what of all the other ppl like you and I that were turned on to their music? Can a grp afford to only please their current fans or is it best to reach out and see who else is out there.
this is the most clever concept for a vid I have ever really noticed. I had it downloaded and then lost it when I got a new hard drive. Two genetics books: hillarious.
Can you do me a favour please and explain what the video means? Is it merely a load of scenes that are 'sort of to do with' reproduction and genetics? Or it is more than that?
Never realised this was a single...wish they'd done it on their last tour..they did loads of songs as well as Architecture & Morality stuff...could never get hold of Dazzle ships ,had it on order for months...
One of the best concept albums ever created: DAZZLE SHIPS. I hope they will bring back this live on tour like "Architecture & Morality" all across the world. It really make sense !!!!
First time i've seen this vid. Should have been on the Greatest Hits Video. I bought the newly remastered Dazzle Ships today from Amazon with extra tracks ! YAAY!
Dazzle Ships is an amazing Album of original ideas. I bought the disc on the first day of release and must admit that it sounds brilliant 25+ years later.
ABSOLUTE BRILLIANCE! Amazing single with a brilliant b-side "4-neu" from one of the best electronic albums ever! "DAZZLE SHIPS" was influenced by kraftwerk, eno and neu! but took the sound much further on a brilliant concept album dressed in Peter Saville's cryptic art design. Classic. And the lp charted no 5 in UK album charts that is not bad at all."Genetic Engineering' reached no 20,quite an achievement for a song about a subject,so ahead of its time!
This is really great to see. I loved this album as a child and still love it today. As everyone else has said, way ahead of it's time and such a shame that not many people seemed to like it. One of my friends once joked with me when he saw it in my collection "Oh, you're the one single person who bought this album then!".
Remarkable how this album holds up today. It's remains high in my top 10 list from the 80's along with Siouxsie & the Banshees' Kiss In The Dreamhouse & ABC's Lexicon of Love...Dazzle Ships (Parts II, III & VII) mix beautifully into ANY Massive Attack track
Pretty much my favourite pop song ever: it's great to see that other people rate the fantastic, subtle, heartbreaking, beautifully paced Dazzle Ships. I saw a stunning OMD concert at the time of that album in Poole. So sad that the response to Dazzle Ships meant that they went downhill (and downmarket) from then on.
I used to love OMD , there're from an era that explored, and experamented with music and usually had something say about this big ol' world and all that goes on within. Of corse they relented later on and turned into POP ... when the major lables got there dirty [Let's make a BUCK at the expence of everything] hooks into them. Oh well ...,I guess it dosen't matter anyways .
By the way, has anyone heard about some apparently legendary performance OMD did on the BBC of their song "88 Seconds in Greensboro"? I heard that there was something bizarre or unnerving about the performance and haven't seen it. Anyone know about this?
Wow, what a nice video! Refreshing. I've seen no videos from Dazzle Ships till now. Dazzle Ships is a moving, beautiful, dark album. The video complements the song in an unexpected way, without being forced. Elegant!
Wow! 20 years old, such a catchy tune but listen to the powerful lyrics. At 2:40 book ripped into two, then becomes one. Dolly The Sheep, OMD predicted ewe :)
"Secret" also missed the greatest hits CD. I have rarely seen a "greatest hits" CD that truly had all the greatest hits. More of a marketing ploy then anything, they sell 2 million of those old ones and then 2 or 3 years from now we will have to buy a 2 CD set that truly has all of the hits. And the RIAA wonder why people P2P.
There's something vaguely mysterious and sinister happening in this video (kidnapping? ransom? medical experiments? cloned kids?). Also there are the repeating code words from the Speak & Spell robot voice (clues?). The video's like a condensed dramatic thriller... like the lyrics, it's ambiguous and enigmatic. But what's it all about? What's actually happening? Any ideas?!
Great song from a GREAT OMD album, under-rated release from 1983, and panned by the critics--who listens to them anyway! Look at all the "old" technology in the video and I still love that Speak & Spell (and I'm not talking about Depeche Mode's first LP!) device they used to say the words in this song and other on Dazzel Ships.

And the message which it carry's is still valid, even more than before. Thank you OMD!
