I live in the Hudson Valley, which is within commuting distance of NYC; many employees who worked at the World Trade Center had homes there. I sat in the home of a 9/11 widow shortly after the attacks and watched her crying without tears because she had none left. Many of the students at my college were from Long Island and knew someone who lost a loved one. Drawing parallels between PAPER AIRPLANES and that atrocity for the sake of political exploitation is what I find truly offensive.
