The Sabbath was similar to all the other holy days (Passover, etc) because those holy days were also rest days, holy convocations & involved additional sacrifices on top of the usual daily sacrifices. The only difference was that the Sabbath was a weekly occurence. In order for the Israelites to observe the Sabbath or any of the other holy days properly, they needed to follow all 3 requirements (rest, assemble for worship & make additional sacrifices). (Numbers 28:9-10 & Leviticus Chapter 23).
