We used to all go down to Henry's to watch Lee paint canvases and bring sketches. When the book came out, we all ran for it. If your piece was not in, you were nobody.
DOES ANYONE KNOW IF THIS BOOK IS THE ORIGINAL WITH MORE PICTURES OR IS IT COMPLETELY DIFFERENT CUZ ON AMAZON IT SHOWED A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT TABLE OF CONTENTS FOR BOTH AND THE ORIGINAL LOOKED BETTER???
@prinsroegetbirk What do you mean? NYC graffiti was practiced by different kids from different ages so you'd have Led Zeppelin heads, Rolling Stone, Beatles, as well as Parliament, James Brown, etc. Hint, the dedication to John Lennon or portraits of front singer, Blondie, who by the way their band embraced the early NY Hip Hop rap form. And the clash, but there were tons of kids into different types of music so what do you mean spirit of hip hop?!?
@Khultan hey- looking back it sounded wrong, i'm into so much music (the groups and singers you've mentioned included). It's amazing how writers are so different, and comes from so many cultures.
Here in Denmark i do a lot to preserve hip hop culture the original way, but what i basically meant, was that the background music didn't fitted the 'feeling' of subway art and New York at that time, that I get when reading it.
I just thought that it screwed up a big part of the video. -Mark
Remember Bunkng school and drooling over this at a mates house round mid 80s! There was another book but i cant think of it.. The coolest generation there has ever been!!!!
Great book! But the down side was that it created a canon of writers and ignored a multiplicity of others. For example, there were no photos of some of the biggest writers of the time, writers such as Phase II, DY 167 aka Jester, Demo, and Cey. And the reader would never know that RTW was the biggest baddest crew on the planet! When I was growing up, there were thousands of writers, and Cooper and Chalfant, though they did it big(!), made graffiti really small.
already purchased! twenty five years, where has the time gone? From the time I first saw the book, in early 1986, until now, I've never been w/o a copy-- but, finally an edition that gets the coffee-table treatment! Bravo to Martha & Henry for capturing a burgeoing, vivacious artistic movement in its infancy, and along with it the imagery of a New York City once upon a time. This book did indeed change my life. Thanks for helping me fall in love with typography and obsess over symmetry! Truly...
I really liked your video. If you need any help getting your channel/video exposed I use a site called Tubeviews . Net It has really done wonders for me.

One more thing. There were legends of Graf not represented who were all city and ruled.
Mitch 77, RTW, Fame City ,and especially Flite 220 and Jon one who took it to the next level. Zephyr was a king and gets
Minor play. It's a slice , but not the whole picture.
