They are good enough to have their songs put in all sorts of different films...even if it is Twilight. It's a little odd to classify Muse as indie at this point. Ignoring their respectably large fanbase, the music is much more ambitious and aggressive than the usual whiny and nonchalant approach that most indie artists take.

As for mainstream, perhaps, but in a roundabout sense. The music they play is generally more simplistic than others in the prog genre (Which is what Muse really is by definition), thereby making it mainstream. But I think people tend to confuse being overall appealing with being mainstream. I think Muse is more the former than the latter.
