Came back to say that after listening to this beautiful song again - the words of this song and his singing are just simply beautiful. It made me cry today. I am amazed that this song is from 1973 it sounds like it was made yesterday - simply beautiful and thank you so much for putting this song on here.
I secretly recorded my friend and posted it up on my channel. He believes he can't sing so I'm on a mission to prove him wrong!! Please have a look at it, he's really good! Thank you!! :D
Charted 50 on Billboard in the US. It was played a ton on my local MOR station, WIP in Philly in the fall of 72 into 73--did very well among the easy listening audiences-- and then never, and I mean never heard from again.
Can never hear this enough, truly brings back huge memories, remember this rita, still think of you all the time and this song says it all as it always did.Playing on a jukebox in kings cross was just magic.the wine the tube and love
Lovely song, beautiful video.Luv the colliery band accompaniment (ahm bahn to,coming from Yorkshire!)..gives it great distinctiveness and passion. Thanks for sharing and for doing the video.
@Writeowl looks like a naked woman with long hair sitting and leaning forward with her fingers interlocked behind her head... quite a nice shot actually....
Takes me back to back to autumn/winter nights with my mum and dad when i was 7 and this was playing on my dad's radiogram. Very English melancholy to this wonderful record.
@ancientraver19881989 i couldn't remember who it was by or what the title was but it is amazing how the mind chucks memories at you - I was just going to mop the kitchen floor when it came to me!!
Blimey Troop107, what time did your school start? Great song though. I spent years looking for a copy of the single to give to a 'special' lady. What a waste of time that was! LG.
i remember listening to this as a child when music wasnt offensive can still remember listening to this on radio two in the morning while ate my breakfast before i went to school, dad was in Northern ireland with the armed forces and it was just me and mum,i was about 5 then.

Memories of the first time I started geting into the local 'hit parade' as an 11-12 year old. Always remembered this song - a beautiful ballad. Also makes you realise A) good music is timeless, and B) time literally flies......
One of my favourite songs its just pours out alot of memories and emotions maybe thats why i hate what they have done to music these days there isnt any feeling in any of the songs these days
Great memories of my dad who passed away in 1983.. he loved this song. Always makes feel close to Him somehow. R.I.P. Dad. You were right about so many things...
I heard this beautiful song back in 1972 in El Salvador the year I considered the best year of my youth, my father was alive I did great in high school all around me was so great and believe me and I am not ashame to say but I was on tears when I hear this song after 38 years as brought me back so many beautiful memories and my wife understand what great memories are made for,
Nostalgia got the better of me in recent times (as it does, at 49....lol), and I re-visited this song. Thank G0d for You Tube for allowing us to find these sorts of beautiful songs without a hitch.

@2n918 It did reach no. 3 in the UK charts. But I agree, he didn't get the attention he deserved. Maybe it had something to do with one of the songs on his first album: It was called 'Song for the Critics', in which he referred to them as 'parasites'!
Although Peter Skellern was 'uncool' in the early 70's I've now revisited 'you're a lady' through hearing it on a French radio station. I was wrong. this is one of the most beautifully written and sung songs I've ever heard. Well done Peter
This takes me back to being a kid. My Dad played the trombone beautifully and this piece always gives me goosebumps. Not heard it for so long so now I am a very happy bunny.Truly a fantastic song forus hopeless romantics.
I seriously think this is one of the best songs of the last 40 years; but you never here it on the radio. I guess it doesn't fit any genre or perhaps any era. It's also very evocative of the north.
@edmund184 I indeed listened to it on the radio. And the station is, I am pretty sure, German radio station SWR1. They broadcast some brilliant music, especially at night.
thanks Whigwood. must have been having a senior moment!!! Of course it was Peter Gabriel.lol.Still cant find it anywhere on you tube. Do you know the song I mean? It was recorded with the Brighouse and Rastrick brass band.I think it is called "that`ll do" Thanks for puttin g me straight.

what a beautiful song,my dad bought this single for my mum back in 73, mum sadly passed away now, but just found this clip and had never realised how fantastic it is( now im 46) R.I.P mum,
@TuneInTurnonWakeup Cheers.....i think one of the reasons he bought it was he played in a brass band and it kind of hit two chords for him ... Mum and the music.
what a loveley thought for you..I bought this myself,im 51 now but still ove these tunes, may ur mum rip..my dad too died pases away 20yrs ago and his fav was kate bush and wuthering heights..bless you!
Releasrd in 1972 and still one of the best. Always reminds me of the first girl I really fancied!!! She was a good friend but nothing more :-( . Ah well cest la vie as they say. Pax to all from Ian Smith.Xxx.

Hit in the Netherlands when I was growing up. I think I was 12 or 13.....has always stuck in my mid. Great song. Thanks for reminding me of the Lynsey de Paul song too....had forgotten about that one.
An unlikely top ten hit at the height of the glam and heavy rock era, but there again the Brighouse and Rastrick Band had a huge hit at the height of disco and punk.
thank you so much for posting this timeless classic. I was born and raised on the south coast of England but this to me just brings fabulous visions of wet northern cobbled streets slate-roofed terraced houses and dark grey skies.............just fabulous!

Quel bonheur! Merci à You Tube de me l'avoir proposée!
Brass bands, choirs, a classical style singer, a shame this type of single wouldn't work now where indie bigots and Simon Cowell dominate our music scene.
This phantastic though nostalgic song from Peter Skellern is refraimed by this beautiful video. Great piece of art. Congratulations also to the video producers.
i grew up in the village where the brass band is from, Grimethorpe in South Yorks. This is a beautiful song and with the connection it always brings a lump to my throat. Thanks for posting
I was actually wondering who actually did this song. I had first heard a French version titled ''vous ma lady'' which was a duet with Brigitte Bardot and this other guy I forget the name. Went out of the country, heard this song on the radio a few years ago, and just found out now. I wonder who did the original?
They played this on WIP in Philadelphia back in 1972. Always liked it. It actually charted 50 on Billboard--not bad for the states. Very nice video. Thanks for posting!
look this is as it is, from a music loving, skateboarding (30 years)bartending reformed drunk this song has always been pretty good, but thank you soooo much for the fantastic art that accompanies this..drove me to a glass of fine red and a small hankercheif to wipe but one tear away. Again thankyou
OMG you never heard this before??? are you serious! and to think he is english and i,m irish?? cant believe you i never heard of this..i bet you a million keith did..

Quel bonheur! Merci à You Tube de me l'avoir proposée!

this was a bit off beat even for the time...70 i think....but shows something with style and class can just cut through

Brass bands, choirs, a classical style singer, a shame this type of single wouldn't work now where indie bigots and Simon Cowell dominate our music scene.

I was actually wondering who actually did this song. I had first heard a French version titled ''vous ma lady'' which was a duet with Brigitte Bardot and this other guy I forget the name. Went out of the country, heard this song on the radio a few years ago, and just found out now. I wonder who did the original?

I thought P.S. version was the original.

They played this on WIP in Philadelphia back in 1972. Always liked it. It actually charted 50 on Billboard--not bad for the states. Very nice video. Thanks for posting!

My first time hearing this lovely song. No fine wine here, but this tune made it go down so much smoother.

look this is as it is, from a music loving, skateboarding (30 years)bartending reformed drunk this song has always been pretty good, but thank you soooo much for the fantastic art that accompanies this..drove me to a glass of fine red and a small hankercheif to wipe but one tear away. Again thankyou
