i was questioning that too! in the begining of the song he is supposed to wake up with his shirt off and get dressed througouht the song! not strip in the middle of it! and i dont care for his voice either!
Great job man, i've sang this song... its hard as hell. not only do you have to keep it moving for like 7 minutes, but it tends be repetetive, so you have to find ways of making every verse different, yet still good. ans the end of was very well executed on your part... lord knows how hard it was for me to hit that high a flat... great job
Nice you skipped a bar and who knows what the fuck was going on in the 4/4 section at the end. It was all random. But nicely done. Work on being more rhythmically predictable - conductors count on that.
I grew up with grandparents who were opera singers and voice teachers. I had lived, breathed, tasted music all my life. The raising of the shoulders is usually taught to make sure you breathe from the diaphragm. Old school but good advice. But this guy knows what he is doing. He has an amazing voice and sang it beautifully. He is acting it out. The only advice I have for his God-given gift is to take care of it. Don't abuse it. Just guard it well. Excellent performance!
I think the person that said about breathing is splitting hairs slightly. At the end of the day that is one of the best versions of that song i have heard. I love this musical!
and yes I do agree with "boyfromwonderland" yes you have been taught how to not move your shoulders up and down when you sing, but, that doesnt always mean that a singer is not breathing the right way, some times in musical you have to do things that your taught not to do as a singer,"your also told not to tilt your head back but that doesnt meen that actors dont do it on stage
umm this is for Brandon, don't ever tell someone they don't know what there talking about because you never know who you may be talking to on hear, second yes I do happen to know what im talking about, I have been working in theatre for a long time, and have even done some broadway work, all I was say earlyer was that you just dont have that kind of power, and not breath the right way...
guys...um.....hello? Its dramatic effect...I've done it before....hes breathing from the diaphragm...but raising his shoulders to give it more of an effect. It's just another way to make it more natural...and besides that, with a voice like that, I seriously doubt he does ANYTHING incorrectly...his voice teacher probably would fix it
Actually, when breathing from the diaphragm you shouldn't raise your shoulders. Raising you shoulders is a sign of singing from the throat and incorrect breathing methods.
breathing doesnt change whether your an opra singer or a broadway belter. im sure he knows how to breath. so instead of singing lessons, to the person who said that, try being in a show: when u have the audience's feelings at your finger tips and everything is on how u present the piece, breathing is the last thing u worry about. lol
my friend did this song for a muscial theater thing, and u have him beasted completely!
For all of you that are saying "breathing" is irrelevant, please... If you're in a show, the purpose of proper breathing/good technique operatic or not is to preserve your voice. You have to learn the proper things to keep you in good voice for weeks on end.
Amazing! I totally fell in love with his voice! Much better than the original version on CD! Good job! You are probably studying musical theater in college, aren't you!
wow i realy am jealous of u haha ur an awsome singer and screw the guy that said ur breathing incorrectly ur doing great ma i wish had that voice hahaha
it isn't cut, at the very very start the chord is NOT the one that starts the song, which shows that it is the complete song, they just didn't RECORD all of it.
its clear that the person that made the coment about breathing is not a singer, and if that person is, than you may not be breathing the right way when you sing,if you where smart enough you would clearly see that he is breathing from his diafram when he takes his shirt off, take some voice lessions who ever you are
I think he is breathing fine. If he was singing in a choir or a classical song he would need to use different breathing techniques, but he's not. He's doing musical theatre and is acting, he still needs good breath support, but in this style of music you have to be able to sing hunched over or curled up in a ball or whatever the part calls for. I think the way he breathes is because Jamie(his character) has all this built up energy that he is letting out
yes! i totally agree. he is really a good singe.r i love his voice. soemthing about it is interesting with a texture one doesn't expect by looking at him. a pleasant surprise. GOOD JOB. what is this guy doing now? performing where? i'd love to know. he's got a fan in me. i'd love to sing with him in fact.
Nice, you have a great voice! You have a nice bod by the way, just so you know, but when you took off your shirt I noticed you breath with your chest. That can lead to some big problems. I would hate for you to ruin your voice due to incorrect breath support. Breath with your diaphragm!!! *cough* if your gonna be a broadway star, you're gonna need that voice.
Thank you SO much for posting this! I am totally in love with The Last Five Years and I am currently studying this piece and am very shortly supposed to sing it for my music theatre class! I am so excited. This is awesome stuff, I LOVE YOU!
wow... that's all I can say... would you marry me? haha! You are an absolutely fantastic performer. Good Luck to you! If you make it, let me know.. I'll be there to see your show :) Break a leg!
You've got great potential. Take it from someone in the biz. You're better than a lot I hear (and I hear a lot) Keep auditioning and take classes whenever you can. Good luck!!
You sound really good but you need to make the song yours. To me it sounds like you definately listened to norbert sing it and then you did it the same way. Even the same riffs. make it yours and it will be even better!
I disagree, Norbert actually didn't really stylize much on the recording, all the stylizations were actually written into the sheet music by the composer. Excellent performance.
i agree with pimpstrey, all the runs and riffs are written specifically that way by Jason Robert Brown. there isn't really another way of singing them.
I would have loved to hear what you could have done with this with full orchestra. In this song particularly, the string section is almost another chararcter in the piece, the cello is especially aching. Not to mention this song has the most effective string glissando in all of contemporary musical theatre.
I bet you would have really rocked it out with full score.
wow. Danny, I really like your work - I think you could def have a career in broadway if yuo worked at it. At any rate, your performance of one of my all-time favorite songs was very, very beautiful. Great job!
