Its not their fault that America puts more attention on the pop, dance, and hip hop artists than they do the young Neo soul artists. But don't be fooled there are PLENTY of young blacks still doing soul music and twisting it up to make their own unique style for today.
@cjfl1962 and supajenny. You must have never heard of Neo-soul before which is an ENTIRE sub genre of R&B which is dedicated to resurrecting the soulful sounds of the 60's and 70's. Look them up, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Reheim Devine, Maxwell, I could go on and on. Black Americans have been doing soul and REINVENTING it for decades.
@vbabygirl85 NEOSOUL?? -Erykah, and who? This makes me feel awful, like a junkie, face down in the gutter and left for dead, 'cause I'd rather have the "real thing" [like Happy Mondays, Live, etc.]
-Check James Brown doing the mashed potato & the camel walk:
....Alicia...you rock my world babe....oh yeah..!!!...what a voice...i've heard of her first time in Seven Nation Army cover and i was standing ....speachless...THE voice...
It is said that Alice Russel once (or twice or whatever) would end up with a bar (accidentally) with Bruce Willis....rite? Bruce would pull out his harmonica but in this song, as sung by Alice, I can hear the influence of Bruce Willis. I have a tape of his that goes way back to the sixties.
Damn, in her own homeland she puts Amy Winehouse and even Joss Stone to shame with those pipes...she almost sounds like prime Chaka from her Rufus days right here!!! Band playin' behind her ain't no joke, either. I first became aware of Russell on one of the tracks she guested on from the Bamboos' 'Rawville' album. Now I have no choice after hearing this. Need to add her music to my collection, ASAP! What a hidden treasure...
I miss how it used to be...and it's fucking excellent to run into someone like Alice - singers/musicians whov'e been thru the heavy and hard parts of life and could therefore sing it with meaning and soul...sang what they mean and mean what they sang...nowadays...just pop icons with a pretty face...thru a lot of fake gimmick machinery.....no soul, just...candy on a stick.
And then!...You run into someone like Alice..!!!...so all is NOT lost!
I tell ya! these white British Soul singers are somethin else! Why do they have so much soul??? Cant find this in America...whats goin on?? Love it love it!
@supajenny You're so right. The real blues and soul singers are old and can't do concerts that much anymore. The new generations are only interested in Hip-Hop and Rap, thus, there is no new audience for the old R&B and Blues. And you know the record industry in the States is all about the money, they could care less about putting out a quality product.
@supajenny Good talent has nothing to do with what color they are, unless that an issue, its their talent! And yes, it can be beautifully appreciated without the racial politics, thankyou, and do enjoy it artfully, music is universal, crossing all boundries!
its a fucking travesty that people like alice have not been on jools holland's show! Why do we have to listen to children plonking away on a casio keyboard ( kate nash etc) and not celebrate the hard graft of singers and players like this who have made genuine sacrafices to stay in the game, against all odds and with a creative sensibility?????? This is the state of the music industry folks.... people like alice are rare! You're fantastic girl!!!! keep riding high!
@rumerlovesyou - Actually, the travesty begins at the producer's desk, but that's a different conversation. Jools would be the proper launch-pad, assuming we could start fresh...
Everyone in this band deserves accolades, but I would like to hear the rhythm track tightened up and stir-fried with duck sauce, a 'la Muscle Shoals, circa 1973...
Is this the John Pizzarelli? If it is, I just LOVE your music. You are fantastic! I just heard Alice Russell today listening to a Mr. Scruff song, and I really like her.
The track "Hurry On Now" is a collaboration with TM Juke from Alice's first album. This video is of the Quantic Soul Orchestra track "Pushin' On" as the label at the beginning states.
They were saying "Big up the English and their warm welcoming attitude toward anything without the letters E.N.G.L.A.N.D and F.A.N.C.Y A C.U.P.P.A involved" nice of them eh :-)
You french....what are you talking about? your comments have nothing to do with this song, go and chat shit about men, dogs, storm some where else - frog
J'espere que ca va pour toi , j'ai pensé fort a toi a 21h, ici pas d'amelioration, place au silence...surement le calme avant la tempete. c'est important que tu saches que je te suivrais n'importe ou;..
ALICE is a world class act and this track with Will Holland and his Quantic Soul Orchestra is soooo HOT but you'll find "Hurry On" on Under The Munka Moon album with the talented T M Duke Alex Cowan, give your lug holes a treat an listen up. xxxx LOVIN that VOICE
Just to clarify a couple of previous comments, this isn't Hurry On, this is Pushing On. This track is by the Quantic Soul Orchestra, which, as the name suggests, does have Quantic as the driving force behind it, and was brought together as a live counterpart to Quantic's solo career, to give some samples back as he put it himself. The track Hurry On is off ALice Russell's first album and is produced by TM Juke, and is a very different, absolutely amazing song, definitely go check it out
Alice Russell worked often with Brian Holland AKA Quantic, a DJ and multi-instrumentalist who playes all the instruments on his records and uses a few samples. I think the backing on this tune was originally his work.
Alice is talented but she is definitely NO Chaka. No comparison.

It's well executed but it sounds a bit too contrived and it has no ounce of originality. There's no doubt that she;s a good singer

@vladamih and who or what might you recommend that isn't "contrived". It's sounds rather genuine to me, but maybe my ear isn't as tried as yours...
