As one of those "theory snobs", I'd have to say the best guitarists are the ones like Emil. He knows his music theory, and he probably could play the same Malmsteen-ripoff harmonic-minor scales over and over if he felt like it, but he has the balls to do something different instead. And if you don't know theory, that's fine too; a lot of guitarists don't, and they just experiment until they find something that sounds good. Theory is just a different way to get there.
Funny, I thought Emil's comment about Gilbert was one of the SMARTEST things anyone has said in the past few years.
I went to one of Paul's V.I.P. lessons at NAMM 2010 and got to sit 2 feet away from him while he was playing and witnessed the depth of his playing first hand.
I think it's pretty sad that anyone feels a video like this even needs to be put out >_> people just love to be negative for no reason. Emil is probably THE best metal guitarist in the world right now, and his philosophies on playing and on music are great and positive. Anyone who tries to rip on him for that... well, sucks to be them, 'cause they must have a pretty sad life.
Any news on those Daath Lesson Songs Jamplay? I remember Emil saying if things don't work he's just gonna say screw it and give all those song lessons away for free
IMO Emil tells the truth about what it is to be pushing the limits of Sonic creativity. Emil, to me, is a genious. And for anyone to think negatively about his perspective on music theory vs creativity needs to realize that this very argument has been present for centuries already. There has never been a right or wrong, and that's where Jazz, Metal, and many other genres that go against classic music theory find a common ground.
Honestly, I've been that kinda guy, to. I've always wanted to be better than te guys before and try to make my own style of playing and looking at music. and I respect Emil for taking the time to capitalize on saying that.
I believe Emil, though. A lot of people took what he was trying to say in a completely negative light. Of course, he wasn't trying to bash Paul Gilbert because that's what one of his biggest influences. What he was trying to say was, dont be another Paul Gilbert, another Kirk Hammett, another Jeff Loomis, another Emil Werstler, because that prevents you from making your own stlye, theory, and ideals about music.
He's wrong in that even the music that doesn't seem to make sense is explained with theory. I understand what he means but I think he misunderstands how theory comes about and what it's for. Theory came secondary to playing, as a way to analyze and explain music in a comprehensive manner. Theory doesn't set limits which seems to be the common misconception, it's simply the grammar that helps us speak the language of music fluently.
@Hobble Although you are correct some people use theory as guidelines when writing music, some of the best music breaks the rules of theory. So if you use theory as a guideline for playing/writing music then your music will be very bland and ultimately not be very adventurous.
@z0mgzt0m I don't really see that as a problem, theory can be used as a guideline the way that sentences and paragraphs are used as guidelines to present ideas. There are simply conventions established that theory allows us to understand how to approach certain moods. There isn't really away to break the rules of theory because theory isn't a set of rules, it's a system for understanding music. Atonal, arhythmic, and microtonal music can all be explained with theory, they're just unconventional.
@Hobble I understand that, im just saying that some people get so deep into theory that they apply to everything, regardless of what mood they are in.
@z0mgzt0m But I still don't see a problem with it. Personally I've found that musicians who understand theory tend to break conventions far more than those who don't understand it. Those who don't know theory tend to use common conventions because the only way they understand music is through mimicking and if they have the time pain staking experimentation. Whereas someone who knows theory has an understand of what the conventions are, how they work, and therefor how to break out of them.
@ShredST And if you know the grammar well enough than that becomes apparent to you. Poor use of musical knowledge doesn't make good music just as poor use of grammar doesn't lead to strong communication.
Beethoven is still unmatched as far as telling a story through music, with all of his most intense and subtle emotions apparent to anyone who heard it. One of the reasons he could do that so well is because he had the knowledge and ability to clearly communicate using the language of music.
People will find any excuse to behave badly. The internet is loaded with spineless scumbags that hide behind made up usernames and spout off anything because they are nothing and they know it. People should have to register their real name, phone number and address on every internet site. All of the losers would be too frighten to mouth off because you would be able to go to there home and kick the shit out of them.
