awesome thanks for posting..........Statler Bros was in there also........... this is just a clip.........Norman Blake is awesome too I am learning about him...........thanks so much for posting
I saw Blake in Louisville Ky in about 1976 at a little hole in the wall place on Main Street. He was amazing! This was the first time I had ever gone out to see a guitar picker in a small venue. Talk about your beginners luck. I've never forgotten his performance that evening.
@thmpick I'll bet it was The Great Midwestern Bluegrass Hall, close to the river in Louisville. I saw Sam Bush (Newgrass Reviva)l. Ricky Skaggs, Vince Gill was with a bluegrass band called Blue grass Alliance. Saw Bill Monroe there once too.
@mr135013 Sorry for the late reply to your comment. No, not Sara (she was extraordinary in many ways but she`s not in this clip). I`m referring to the late, great Mother Maybelle Carter.
Norman Blake is a legend among guitarists, and he played on many of Cash's records, starting around 1962. You can hear his Dobro in the background on "Ring of Fire".
The male backup is indeed the original Statler Bros. (with Lew DeWitt); also appearing with the Carter Family is Robbie Harden (of the Harden Trio, which had the hit "Tippy-Toeing" in 1966). She later filled in for June while she was on maternity leave, giving birth to John Carter Cash.
This is great. I knew the last song in the video before, but the two other songs in this video make it even more precious. This is so beautiful. The Cash show definitely was one of the greatest ever to be broadcasted on TV. This is pure gold we watch here!
i'm new to the artistry of norman blake and i've never heard this song before. i'm always amazed at anything i hear norman on, everything sounds so good.
norman blake is a very talented musician and songwriter. i've never been disappointed by any of his albums, albums featuring him, or the few live performances that i've seen. thanks for sharing this video!

I didn't know Norman played the banjo. In addition to all the instruments, he can really sing too!

Mouldytone--you better be talking about Mother Maybelle Carter, although there are a lot great musicians on that stage.
fek2000 1 year ago
Mr Blake was then and is now, a wonderful musician (and singer of the old songs).
I`d like to mention that the most important musician on that stage wasn`t playing an instrument and was singing backing vocals!
Know who I`m talking about?

@Mouldytone
Presumably you mean Sara Carter, the older lady in the line up

Great post. Blake is excellent. Anybody know if that group of male back up singers is the Statler Brothers? Looks like them to me.

Quite a 'hat's off' Johnny gives to Norman
The CD Norman Blake Live at McCabe's has got some absolutely jaw dropping tracks on it. One of my favorite bluegrass CDs.
