"And though your wristwatch always works/Your necktie never fits . . . "--such a great, great line, and such pure Costello! But then this song is full of great, great lines--lyrical and melodic . . .
Whoever posted this, I love you. As a late 70s/early 80s kid who watched Tom Baker, K9 and Sarah Jane, I became a fan of Aimee Mann in university. This is such a beautiful song, and one that perhaps, the record buying public never realised or understood in 1988 when Til Tuesay released Everything's Different Now. You have done such a marvellous job in making a video that all Dr Who fans - and Aimee Mann - fans will love. Seriously, if I ever meet you, I WILL buy you a beer. Thank you. ;)
Damn, this is a great song! Kudos to Elvis for always being ready to work with other first-rate songwriters, and kudos to Aimee for an overall great career that too few people have heard about.
@captslappy There is indeed an Elvis Costello version. I prefer EC's version, theres much more atmosphere. And though Aimee is great, I feel that EC sings it with more emotion. It's easier to believe the lyrics when he sings them.
This is a wonderful song, though i could live without the naff Dr Who visuals. For me there's something about EC's delivery of the song that makes it special, that Aimee somewhat throws away in this version, even though i'm a huge fan of hers. I still think it's his tune i'm afraid, but sine his version is not available here, this is great to be going on with.
Is there any links to the Elvis Costello version. I grew up hearing this [the Aimee Mann version], and really like it. I also like Elvis Costello, so I should imagine I would like his version of this song.
I doubt it's a little help from Elvis Costello. This song is the first (and my favorite) track on his album "All This Useless Beauty". And if he really did help write it with her, his version is much better. You know, whatever. haha.
I've always loved Aimie Mann and remember this song she co-wrote with Costello from the eighties after she broke up Til Tuesday and went solo. I alos loved seeing Sarah Jane agan in this episode. A lovely, charming video.
My fav youtube vid. Aimee's song is an inspired match to the timeless (re: complex) relationship between Sarah Jane & the good Doctor. In one vid, you have the legendary Tom Baker & Liz Sladen pairing juxtaposed with the Tennant, Piper & Sladen triplet. Pure Magic.
the whole album "everything's different now" by til tuesday is fantastic. it is very much along the lines of this song. great lyrics, guitar and synth. great late 80s music
It would be nice to see the Doctor return for Sarah Jane (and K-9), now Rose has gone. I enjoyed the vid and the tribute to Sarah Jane is a nice change from all the Doctor/Rose tributes
Truly excellent. A perfect video for a perfect character. Sarah Jane Smith is a legend in her own right. Let's hope her and K-9 return as Private Investigators at the Torchwood Institute in the Doctor Who Spin Off Series Torchwood.

This is beautiful, and all the more poignant in light of Lis Sladen's passing. Goodbye, Sarah Jane, you will be sorely missed :(

My mistake- it was indeed co-written by Costello and Aimee Mann.

As far as I know this was the original version. I'd love to find an Elvis Costello version if there is one.

Elvis recorded his own version. Look for it on the "All This Useless Beauty" album.

Thank you for the info. I will have to check that out.

What a song. Michael Penn does a ripping Elvis impression when he and Aimee play it together.
Aimee is one of my favorite guests on the Adam Corolla radio show: brilliant, beautiful, great sense of humor.

This versions is better than Elvis'...and I'm a huge fan of his. BTW, EC is singing backup on this song.

Great song and great video. But, you don't have any scenes with Jon Pertwee.
It would be nice to see her first meeting with the 3rd Doctor to juxtapose the sadness of her parting with the 4th Doctor.

I've always thought this was the greatest co-lab from 2 of the best writers ever... Aimee will always be my muse!
