The Dolls, you don't know ROCK if you don't know The New York Dolls. The start of the hair bands, the glam bands. Glam before KISS made it cool. Yes a great obscure band almost lost to the anals of history that many of the later bands were influenced by and admittedly patterned themselves after. RIP Johnny Thunders, sometimes you never know your influence until it is too late.
I want to go see Motley Crue and Poison in concert... but after watching this, I may not go, because I don't want to have to sit through more of this crap.
It seems the The Dolls music had more of a 60's Garage influence, and Kiss, maybe more of a Stadium Rock (70's) thing. It's all good, why compare anyway?

The kid's parents were junkies and often left him alone in their apartment. One day he was alone when the heat went off in the apartment. He tried to light a gas stove to get warm, and blew himself up in the process. Messed up story.
Some of the greatest rock bands never sold many records. The Velvet Undergound, The Stooges, The Sex Pistols, Joy Division, The Pixies and The New York Dolls. Johnny Thunders RIP you and the Dolls were true originals.

Only 2 original members survived. Billy the drummer died after the 1st album. Johnny O'D''ed in 91. Kane died of an anuerism I think.

Glimmer Twins, Toxic Twins, Mick Jagger, David Johansen, c'mon man. Then you have Hanoi Rocks and Guns N' Roses who are influenced heavily by all of these bands.

Nikki Sixx admits that he is[was] heavily influenced by the Dolls and Thunders in particular. That being said, the only thing that Sixx 'stole' was his hairstyle. Sixx is an accomplished songwriter and has made it to Rock Legend status. Their musical styles are very different.

Some people are just looking at their transvestite clothes, hair and makeup. But these songs mix glam rock with the proto punk of The Stooges and MC5. I think the Dolls were awesome. It's a sick world where a shitty band like KISS get all the glory.

@lounginaddict , that was almost 10 yrs after the NY Dolls broke up. Buster Poindexter. This was what he should have become famous for. Ever see the New York Dolls documentary that was on Showtime for months a while back? You should check it out. Made in 2004 just b4 Arthur Kane died, their 1st bass player. Only 2 original members survived. Billy the drummer died after the 1st album. Johnny O'D''ed in 91. Kane died of an anuerism I think.

@mariosthunders I have been thinking the same thing. I've often heard it said that Aerosmith are the American Rolling Stones, but these guys are a better fit. Johansen definitely knows a thing or two about being a frontman, some of which he learned from Jagger. Whatever though--NYDs are kickass.

@hotdamienhendrix It's natural to compare them, though . Aerosmith and The Dolls modeled themselves on the Stones to a large extent. Jagger wasn't impressed and didn't like Aerosmith at all. Glimmer Twins, Toxic Twins, Mick Jagger, David Johansen, c'mon man. Then you have Hanoi Rocks and Guns N' Roses who are influenced heavily by all of these bands.

Insofar as the Stones, Dolls, and Aerosmith have dynamic frontmen and play blues riff based rock and roll, yes, they are similar. Calm down, I'm only making an observation.
