The rifle was probably dropped by someone other than the shooter and said shooter wasn't informed *cough* kids *cough*. If he didn't have high scope rings he couldn't use the iron sights. Or the gun might not even have iron sights, who knows.

I seriously doubt a hunter would go out into the field knowing his rifle wasn't sighted in.
