  • Music from the Shrine

  • I admit that it was through this performance that I was introduced to this composition, and consequently a lot of other late-romantic and impressionist music. However, listening to the ELP version again, I notice so many flaws. They don't even play it in the alternating 5/4 and 6/4 meter, and they're a prog rock band!

  • The Nice were the progressive rock Beatles. ELP is the progressive rock Wings.

  • I think Yes and early Genesis played great music also but they were not quite as over the top or bombastic as ELP.I do think ELP painted them selves into a corner while Yes,Pink Floyd and Genesis did not. That said ELP had some of the best musicians in all of rock music along with Yes and ELP rocked as hard as anyone in the prog genre.

  • @Big77Jim Exactly. This film shows how it was really genious - both sophisticated and spontaneous music. And I think Mussorgsky would be its fan for vitality and the colour inside, impossible to achieve on the piano. However, "Pictures" will be always attarctive!

  • Estos sí que eran músicos de verdad, y con tres bastaban. Ahora vemos escenarios llenos de niños ricos tontos y soberbios que juntos no tocan ni la décima parte de esto.

  • this songs kills!

  • I love this album.I can't believe that ELP's music has not stood up to time like Yes,Pink Floyd or Genesis has.At the time they where every bit as popular but not now.Why.

  • @Big77Jim Because people have gotten stupider and have lost touch with any sense of real beauty.

  • interesting, however, abuse of modest mussorgsky's genius. too much of a rock'n'roll show

  • great performance rite up there with yes and other great artists

  • well this sucks

  • @daniel747ful y quién eres tú?

  • Keith...

  • Incredible timing from the drummer

  • 5:29

and then they invented happy hardcore

  • What a blast! First time ive listened to this band, their freakin crazy jammers love em!!!

  • I have the DVD. It is a treasure. Thanks for the upload, so I can enjoy it while I travel. All 3 look like babies - yet what freaking genius.

  • I was at this, december 1970 but was sitting so far forward that I never got shown when the camera swung round, but I ll survive. liked bits of elp, but much preferred the nice

  • @puddypuss

Definitely, the Nice were a much more interesting band. Yes, Lake and Palmer had slightly better chops than Jackson and Davison, but in the Nice it was about the music and not so much about showing off.

  • There was a time when music was music!!!!

  • Estos sí que eran músicos de verdad, no como lo que abunda en estos tiempos... Sobre todo los que se hacen llamar DJs.

  • @JCarlo1981 Los DJs no son músicos...

  • Saying that this, or any other piece, should only be played as originally intended by the composer is foolish at best. For example Modest Mussorgsky never finished "Night on Bald Mountain". At the time of his death all he had were some rough sketches. Rimsky-Korsakov completed and orchestrated them. Maurice Ravel orchestrated "Pictures". Are both of these then illegitimate?

BTW, my favorite transcription of "Pictures" was the one for organ by Calvin Hampton.

  • Where are musicians like this nowadays?

  • @yakhiba Old in their homes, or dead! =/

  • @yakhiba The late 1960's and early 1970's are and ever shall be the ultimate pinnacle of music on Earth.

  • Maravilha!

  • Possibly, this one is the second work most adapted of the history of the music (after Paganini's variations).

  • @Rabarga Yeah. After Ravel's orchestral adaptation.

  • @yakhiba ...and we must not forget the Aranjuez concerto :)

  • Lol @drstevenrey who thought this was original Emerson Lake and Palmer material :p

  • If I want bearable self-indulgence, I'll watch Deep Purple's 20 minute live version of "Space Truckin".

  • progcesja.blogspot.com tu niezla stronka moze byc do poczytania i posluchania o elp

  • Why doesn't Greg get noticed for his singing, because it's excellent

  • How much LSD is required to write this. Not that it's not good, but still.

  • @drstevenrey Ask the composer, Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky. Oh, wait, he died 150 years ago...

  • The members of Sonic Youth should learn how to do an ELP experimental sound quality.

  • /watch?v=tCed47HdRu8 thumbs up for this to get over 1,000,000 views

  • A JHE interpretation of the middle portion of this song would've been interesting.

  • There is nothing to touch this. unless you prefer to listen to lowest common denominator rock for eternity.

  • This is awful, wrap Mussorgsky in wire and put magnets in his grave. He will produce enough electricity to power a medium sized town he is spinning so fast.

Listen to the blind Japanese pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii play the composition as it was intended to be played.

  • @charliesommers494 i'm sure emerson and company knew what they were doing

  • @juandhaltrich Sorry to differ so much but I enjoy music that is played as it was intended to be played by the composer. Do a search for Picture's at an Exhibition played by Nobuyuki Tsujii and compare the two versions. ELP does some things well but this, unfortunately, is not one of those things.

  • @charliesommers494 it´s ok if you dont like ELP´s adaptation... but Awful? that´s bold. they´re great musicians

  • @charliesommers494 u really think so? i think these instruments are just right for the picture of the gnome, there was no synth or hammond back then when mussorgsky composed this..

  • this is one bullocks long intro for bit of nice singing.

  • Emerson, Lake & Palmer are the id of Pink Floyd's ego!

  • @Matheusssss Palmer 10 x 6 Manson

  • & the spacing between phrases is all wrong.

  • christ this is awful

why even do this to mussorgski?

I think ELP are ok, I enjoy brain salad surgery, but this captures none of the feeling of the original.

  • Im 13 and I do like it but who gives a shit. The real reason I like it is because.of the meaning of the music

  • and that good sirs is how to put ambientation in music!

  • I did buy the CD, but I still like having instant access via youtube.

  • esto si es musica

  • Esta música influyó en mis conocimientos y creación musical.

  • thank you for the memories , still play them

  • @MrJuliesguy Listen at the very beginning of EMERSON LAKE & PALMER - Promenade & The Gnome . He says, "The pictures on display are some of Mussorsky and some of our own." Mussorsky being the composer of Pictures at an Exhibition.

  • @MrJuliesguy He did, he gives credit in the first few seconds of the video and on the front cover of the album. Mussorgsky is also credited on almost every track on the album sleeve and the actuall record itself.

  • 02:39 - haha, funny

  • Wow. We've got it so much better today with rap and industrial noise metal. :0(

  • The Nomed !!

  • quite before their day... I was in High School... I cry when I hear these memories, of a time when my hopes and dreams were not yet dashed by life

  • Well, so much for Mussorgsky.

  • ELP did what they did best.....because nobody else could!

  • the bands you like so there won’t be any question as to how lofty and complex your musical palette is. Grow up, junior.

  • MrOpenmind77, you don’t have a very open mind. You assume the position that so many prog rock fans do. You believe that if someone doesn’t care for a band or a piece of music you personally enjoy then they must be a boorish philistine with zero appreciation for “real” music. You toss around words like simpleton and crap. You denigrate popular contemporary musicians in some lame attempt to belittle those who have different tastes in music. Then you give us a laundry list of

  • Loooooooooooooooooooooooove Carl Palmer.

  • There are so many stupid people in this world! ELP are perfect. Best prog band EVER!

  • @LittleArabellaGumby They rock but the best prog band would be YES.

  • @LittleArabellaGumby What about gentle giant?genesis? floyd? hard to tell who's the best!

  • It is not a secret that live performances from ELP back in the 70's were not the greatest due to the complexity of their composition and the differences between the recorded albums and live were huge. However this is one of the rare exceptions. You can see how Palmer eye communicate with Emerson to do his part.Palmer has been criticized for his speed and out of synch that forced Emerson to adjust the play, but in this performance, everybody played at the right time.Even Emerson has a partiture

  • @aqualung Maybe the live performances in the 70's were not the greatest.... however some of us - including myself - are still "somewhat annoyed" by the fact that we were practically still not potty trained when ELP were around...... I would have loved to see them live in the early 70's..... :-)

  • @NgaioU I was there brother and it was awesome.

  • @swaggs envy envy envy..... I was 5 years old

  • @NgaioU I was a foetus.

  • @swaggs you're a lucky man... i was born 25 years after this performance.

  • @nikolas99t Indeed I was my man.

  • Brilliant and evocative..

  • WTF? Wooooooooooowwww!!!

  • Carl Palmer on a drums kill my brain.

  • @vertiz95 , still... he turns me on.

  • Lady GaGa is talented but she has prostituted her talent and instead uses tasteless stunts to sell her music. Justin Bieber is just the latest teen heartthrob and will be forgotten when the next one comes along. But ELAP's music has stood the test of time.

  • @SirKnightspirit there's no compare no story this is pure evocation of daemons what is Gaga shit? nothing just waste, rubbish, shit

  • @SirKnightspirit also Bieber is the same shitty stuff

  • @SirKnightspirit true about the beiber thing

do people still remeber the back street boys not really a little but not really

  • All the haters just don't understand real music...

  • if i had to compare this song to a poop it would be diarrhea

  • pretty awesome....actually a fucked up mess...but im tired and dont give a fuck...

  • @horrorflesh

A fucked up mess? That's called PROG, retard.

  • @Suckedintooblivion - lets call it prog then....a prog mess-terpiece.

  • 100% music

  • 85 people did not like this,,,damm shame

  • It's ok but I really prefer Maurice Ravel's orchestrated version.

  • This band was fantastic for six albums (counting Welcome Back My Friends live album) after which they achieved levels of suck previously unknown to human kind.

  • Justin Bieber is so much better

  • the new live Mats/Morgan Band CD on Cuneiform is a bit like this !!! There are some Hardin/York meets Banco del Mutuo Soccorso moments here too

  • @peonyification パーマーさんも可愛くて迷っちゃいますね^^;

  • such a bullshit

  • @diegu01 Bullshit is your mamma! Go listen the crackhead Britney and the transvestite "Lady" GaGa!!! LMFAO

  • @diegu01 And don't ignore the little faggy-boy J.Bieber!!! LMAO!!!

  • @ThePsychoeffect actually, they look and play like Britney, Lady Gaga and Bieber. Listen the real version for piano or the orchestration by Ravel. Educated yourself.

  • @diegu01 dont feed the troll

  • The gay clothes and long hair back then ! LOL ! The music was excellent.Very talented musicians.

  • Wow, I could just play Refugee, Hardin & York, Lee Michaels, Ekseption and Il Balletto di Bronzo all at the same time.

  • omg i remember smoking weed and feeling avant garde to this when i was a student...

  • this is progresive...

  • 79 stupid people.. ahahhaha

  • Absolutely classic Keith Emerson @ 6:40! pure madness.

  • This is like a medicine..

  • ELP are directly responsible for the formation of so many music genres.

  • no wonder everybody hates prog rock.

  • @julianhatwell You are stupid!

  • @MrET1966 I'd be stupid if I couldn't appreciate the GREATEST instrumentalist of the World as ELP! Get off and go continue to jerk off!

  • what a voice !!

Greg sings like an angel from heaven <3

  • I Fucking Love This Band.

  • …lets collect for an undershirt for that guy!

  • Shaggy this was released in 1970

  • Got to see them live in concert at CAL JAM 1 Ontario,CA 1974 headlining with several other bands. They shook the whole ground..awesome concert...never forget.

  • Mas bien se va sobre la obra de pinturas en exhibición, creon que es diferente de lo que pudo ser floyd en su momento,

  • It seems almost experimental, like the old Pink Floyd. Cool.

  • The audience looks captivated, like they just don't know what to think! Amazing what they could do with the musical equipment of the day.

  • ELP introduced me to the music of Mussorgsky, Ginastera and others.

  • Emerson was the greatest keyboard player ever..close after him was Rick Wakeman, but I like Emerson better.

  • ELP were fantastic!

  • I carry the dust of a journey...

  • EXCELENTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The BEST - they were so good live - no one can touch em. The energy they produced shifted your consciousness! Thanks for posting! Much Love & Light...

  • It seems they've only turned to Rock because there is more money in it.

Otherwise, any one of the three can arguably play with any symphony orchestra in the world.

  • @sehaalturk I honestly think that this sort of musicianship exists in metal scene. They are proud of being able to play as well as they can to deliver the goods regardless the specific genre of metal.

  • @sehaalturk

My old physician attended the same school of music as Keith Emerson did.

I sure hope that your are right and that this is indeed the case.

( His comment was that never in my wildest dreams would I have guessed that

he was going to be as famous as he did).

  • im 13 and this is my favorite song

  • ELP at their apex..!

  • mi mancate, tanto ma proprio tanto!

  • How do they remember all that? Dang

  • UNBELIEVABLE. This class of music is gone. Thanks for sharing.

  • I bought it some years ago,is a must see one.THE ELP at the height of their powers.

  • Great band ! Great music !!!

  • Tripping + ELP = A Good Fucking Time!!!!!

  • modeste mussorgsky!!!!

  • J M is and was 1 of the best (IS)?Yeehaaaa

  • The Hammer!!!

  • is this the same version from the album?

  • @Youtubi13 No. This version was played at 9/12/1970, The definitive Lp version was taped on 1971 (March). But are pretty close. On Lp version they were engineereed by Eddy odford, that´s the difference.

  • @lavallee1963 and here we are, 41 years later, and indeed, from seeds of confusion/illusion, dark blossoms HAVE grown!!...lol

  • @Youtubi13 I don't think so the album version of this is longer it took up a whole side of a record

  • @Youtubi13 its the same version from the album if you have the deluxe edition, otherwise no

  • @MrGuitar0492, it's hard to make top 2, but I guess Brain Salad Surgury (why did you leave this out 1997thack), and Tarkus, but Trilogy closely follows.

  • NON CI CREDO !!!

  • awesome. \m/

  • Keith Emerson will forever be the greatest rock keyboardist in Rock history! So many greats Patrick Moraz, Rick Wakeman, Etc..So hard too believe that Jimi Hendrix was on the verge of forming and joining this band right before his abrupt death in Sept of 1970.

  • hey someone can tell me the best two album of ELP

  • @MrGuitar0492 Trilogy 1972 and Taurkus 1972

  • One of the fucking best drummersever!!!! At just 17!! love ELP

  • エマーソン・レイク&パーマー、展覧会の絵、当時のライヴ映像の10分間全貌~メロディ・ベースの権化、グレッグ・レイク、当時震えた高校3年の私!

  • the lyrics at the end are some of the most deep and meaningfull i have ever heard....not that the rest is any less from awsome...but thoose verses just hit me hard....

  • H.E.L.P me...

  • Keith Emerson was absolutely the Jimi Hendrix of the keyboard!

  • Great Masterpiece! I expecially love that part, that starts at 9:23 :)

  • 3:27
