I admit that it was through this performance that I was introduced to this composition, and consequently a lot of other late-romantic and impressionist music. However, listening to the ELP version again, I notice so many flaws. They don't even play it in the alternating 5/4 and 6/4 meter, and they're a prog rock band!
I think Yes and early Genesis played great music also but they were not quite as over the top or bombastic as ELP.I do think ELP painted them selves into a corner while Yes,Pink Floyd and Genesis did not. That said ELP had some of the best musicians in all of rock music along with Yes and ELP rocked as hard as anyone in the prog genre.
@Big77Jim Exactly. This film shows how it was really genious - both sophisticated and spontaneous music. And I think Mussorgsky would be its fan for vitality and the colour inside, impossible to achieve on the piano. However, "Pictures" will be always attarctive!
Estos sí que eran músicos de verdad, y con tres bastaban. Ahora vemos escenarios llenos de niños ricos tontos y soberbios que juntos no tocan ni la décima parte de esto.
I love this album.I can't believe that ELP's music has not stood up to time like Yes,Pink Floyd or Genesis has.At the time they where every bit as popular but not now.Why.
I was at this, december 1970 but was sitting so far forward that I never got shown when the camera swung round, but I ll survive. liked bits of elp, but much preferred the nice
Definitely, the Nice were a much more interesting band. Yes, Lake and Palmer had slightly better chops than Jackson and Davison, but in the Nice it was about the music and not so much about showing off.
Saying that this, or any other piece, should only be played as originally intended by the composer is foolish at best. For example Modest Mussorgsky never finished "Night on Bald Mountain". At the time of his death all he had were some rough sketches. Rimsky-Korsakov completed and orchestrated them. Maurice Ravel orchestrated "Pictures". Are both of these then illegitimate?
BTW, my favorite transcription of "Pictures" was the one for organ by Calvin Hampton.
This is awful, wrap Mussorgsky in wire and put magnets in his grave. He will produce enough electricity to power a medium sized town he is spinning so fast.
Listen to the blind Japanese pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii play the composition as it was intended to be played.
@juandhaltrich Sorry to differ so much but I enjoy music that is played as it was intended to be played by the composer. Do a search for Picture's at an Exhibition played by Nobuyuki Tsujii and compare the two versions. ELP does some things well but this, unfortunately, is not one of those things.
@charliesommers494 u really think so? i think these instruments are just right for the picture of the gnome, there was no synth or hammond back then when mussorgsky composed this..
@MrJuliesguy Listen at the very beginning of EMERSON LAKE & PALMER - Promenade & The Gnome . He says, "The pictures on display are some of Mussorsky and some of our own." Mussorsky being the composer of Pictures at an Exhibition.
@MrJuliesguy He did, he gives credit in the first few seconds of the video and on the front cover of the album. Mussorgsky is also credited on almost every track on the album sleeve and the actuall record itself.
MrOpenmind77, you don’t have a very open mind. You assume the position that so many prog rock fans do. You believe that if someone doesn’t care for a band or a piece of music you personally enjoy then they must be a boorish philistine with zero appreciation for “real” music. You toss around words like simpleton and crap. You denigrate popular contemporary musicians in some lame attempt to belittle those who have different tastes in music. Then you give us a laundry list of
It is not a secret that live performances from ELP back in the 70's were not the greatest due to the complexity of their composition and the differences between the recorded albums and live were huge. However this is one of the rare exceptions. You can see how Palmer eye communicate with Emerson to do his part.Palmer has been criticized for his speed and out of synch that forced Emerson to adjust the play, but in this performance, everybody played at the right time.Even Emerson has a partiture
@aqualung Maybe the live performances in the 70's were not the greatest.... however some of us - including myself - are still "somewhat annoyed" by the fact that we were practically still not potty trained when ELP were around...... I would have loved to see them live in the early 70's..... :-)
Lady GaGa is talented but she has prostituted her talent and instead uses tasteless stunts to sell her music. Justin Bieber is just the latest teen heartthrob and will be forgotten when the next one comes along. But ELAP's music has stood the test of time.
This band was fantastic for six albums (counting Welcome Back My Friends live album) after which they achieved levels of suck previously unknown to human kind.
@ThePsychoeffect actually, they look and play like Britney, Lady Gaga and Bieber. Listen the real version for piano or the orchestration by Ravel. Educated yourself.
There are some amazing realities about the Bible but none as fascinating as the fulfillment of Prophecy. The Rock Phenomenon is one of them. Is it described symbolically in Revelation? These bands are described as tormentors of certain persons who were not Christians.Rev 9“hurt...only those men which have not the seal of God ... And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented..and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man.”
Got to see them live in concert at CAL JAM 1 Ontario,CA 1974 headlining with several other bands. They shook the whole ground..awesome concert...never forget.
