you can use your boxing for defense in the streets and there have been many cases of a boxer almost killing a guy even a police officer in a street fight, so check twice before you even say something.....

It's tough for a guy built like Ali to be good a wrestling. He has a tall, slender build with a high center of gravity and a style that focused on speed and dancing. Put in a true bruiser like Marciano, Foreman, Frazier, or Tyson and see what happens. Those guys knew how to hurt and were built like bulls. Joe Louis once said that Marciano was so tough that just bumping into him would hurt you. That's how tough those guys were.

The fact is that BOTH are equally important.
What good is a striker if his ground game sucks?
Anderson beat Sonnen with submission. Brock beat Carwin with submission.
Mir beat Brock with submission. Bones beat Bader by submission.
If you cant fight on the ground well, your ass will be on the undercard.
I would say its just as easy getting average at striking as it is at getting average at grappling.

3.cont. fact is...you can train a striker with grappling and you'll see some belts being held for a fucking long ass time.
it is difficult to train a wrestlehead or BJJ master to strike. the greatest in mma is a person who can close the connection to all skills or be able to adequately deliver one or the other at the correct time.
what keeps a belt holder on top. is it his superior wrestling. fuck no people it's the striking. the grappling background is enough to NEUTRALIZE

2cont. the grappling. whether it be bjj or wrestling most will go for the take down because their hand skills and kicking is absolute SHIT. there are some who are good with it, but...quit the BS...you know what the fuck you're looking at. IT TAKES YEARS to develop an isolated skill like punching and kicking-both involve speed, coordination, and ACCURACY.
your KID brother can grab you and go for a take down. take downs are a extremely elementary transition.

i train in mma...so that fucking qualifies me to know and understand a few things about the sport. first, no man should be a bitch to a sport. if you do, that's your fault. love what you do...but understand, it doesn't make you who you are. my base is bjj, but i know that in mma...if you start treating a match like you're at the fucking grappling convention-you're gonna get fucked up: see: jones vs vera.
most average mma fighters depend one thing as an advantage...

It doesnt matter if you think so. It doesnt matter what you think. Most likely he would lose. Hes merely trained to punch and dodge. Hes not trained to grapple, reverse an oncoming punch, or apply a submission hold. Sure he COULD win. theres always that possibility....if he can land an effective knockout punch while avoiding a tie-up. But when dealing with the guys I mentioned above....thats a slim possibility

I believe the original "Wide World of Sports" announcer was Jim McKay, but the guy in the voiceover was Bob Luce. This was one of two instances when "WWOS" actually aired pro wrestling matches; the other was Chris Taylor in one of his early matches vs Maurice ("Mad Dog") Vachon. Check out Freddie Blassie "selling" Ali's punches for him, and that's Dick the Bruiser outside the ring in Jay's corner (in the white "wife beater" shirt)

Ali wasted himself in these stupid demonstration fights. He should have saved it for the sport he'd chosen to be in. A boxers career is short due to the punishment they take. Taking blows to the legs when he has no training for leg defense is ridiculous.

BTW - the reason Ali was using heavy gloves was so he wouldn't hit Kenny Jay full force. His gloves had extra padding in them.

This was taken from an episode of ABC's "Wide World Of Sports" and was done in conjunction with Vince McMahon, who was co-promoting the Ali vs Inoki fight with Bob Arum. I'd like to see the 2nd fight that they had that day where Ali fought wrestler Buddy Wolfe (ex-husband to the late Vivian Vachon). I think the original announcer was Jim McKay. Not sure who is doing the voice-over.

@yoshi207 Sylvia is a notoriously slow starter, and was dumb enough to play the striking game. Don Frye? Reeeeaally? That fight was like a drunken brawl. In a cage/ring with a ref, after an 8 week training camp, your corner ect. that would have gone down different. Oh, and if he had used his F-ing wrestling that would have worked to. My point is that in a profesional fight, a "pure" boxer will lose more often to a MMA practicioner. Even Dos Santos and Liddell had solid bjj and wrestling.
