@Epsilon15 Maybe ... but LISTEN to Marc Lifschey :54-1:14, 7:19 one of the greatest instrumentalists I have ever heard.. Lynn Harrell cello( Myron Bloom Principal horn is pretty amazing as well!)
Another is Ormandy with the aristocrats of American orchestras, the Philadelphia. Yet another is Karajan and the Berlin Philharmoniker, but his was a sound that towards the later part of their association became smooth and plush (minus the sharp edges) that bordered on the bland.
It is an established fact that certain conductors besides being indelibly linked with certain orchestras with whom they have managed successfully to create their most productive and glorious period, can also claim the added distinction of having carved out a distinctive sound for the orchestra, a sound that once heard cannot be forgotten. Szell and the Cleveland is one such association (more to come). sd goh (malaysia)
I couldn't agree more Lynn. He was and always will be THE MAN!!!
I am proud to have studied with him.

AAH, it's so friggin' slow. It's gonna suck to have to play the oboe "solo" for my audition.
