  • "了" can be pronounced "le" or "liao." When we use it to denote past tense (as in 到了), we would pronounce it "le" instead of "liao." I think that, because this video was made to help people learn Chinese, the pinyin is trying to depict what it would sound like if you said the lyrics out loud.

  • In 1935, songwriter Tian Han had to write a song for the closing of the movie "Son and Daughters of Turbulent Times," which called upon the Chinese public to resist impending Japanese invasion of China.

    Tian then received a telegram informing that his two friends, a married couple who were college students from Japanese-occupied Manchuria that had gone back to join the insurgency against the invaders, had perished. Based on his emotions then, Tian wrote this song, popularized during W.W.II.
